OLDROYD opened its doors on 9th July 2015 at 344 Upper Street, just off Camden passage and Islington Green. The restaurant offers a daily changing European menu built around the best seasonal British ingredients.
"I really hope Oldroyd will become an integral part of the Islington dining scene, offering relaxed service and delicious food to locals and visitors alike" - Tom Oldroyd
Food was delicious - crisply fried artichoke with aïoli, porchetta, roasted beetroot all beautifully prepared. Intimate ambience. I think some upgrading of the loo wouldn't go amiss, but that's my only criticism!
An absolutely delightful lunch. Simple, beautiful and elegant healthy Monday lunch. Old Roys is the best for such a civilised affair:
Addicted to Oldroyd - it's different but not so much as to be faddy, just amazing flavours with fresh ingredients. Every dish is put together there and then which makes it really easy to cater for vegan friends - especially with so many dishes being all about the vegetables.
We greatly enjoyed the food here. The combination of flavours was interesting and stimulating. The staff were lovely and concerned that we should enjoy our dinner. However, it was a cold evening and the curtain around the door did little to keep the cold at bay. My partner sat with her back to the wall so didn't feel the cold. I had my back to the curtain around the front door and just got progressively, insidiously colder as the dinner went on (the dining space downstairs is very small indeed, but that's just a function of where the restaurant is, and there is, as I later discovered, an upstairs dining room). I think Oldroyd's needs a warm air air curtain to cut the cold draft that comes in, or perhaps to reconfigure the seating arrangements. I'm sympathetic to the needs of restaurateurs to maximise the number of covers, but you may need to strike a different balance here. I would gladly return on a warmer evening or if I could be seated upstairs. Winter is coming, after all!
Oldroyd is the sort of restaurant everyone, in a perfect world, would have nearby. Imaginative food, friendly staff and a small but good wine list. I've tended to go on meatless Mondays but a mid-week trip found quite a few vegetarian favourites reprised (the wondrous grilled aubergine with a garlicky sauce and pickled shallots, and a splendid nutty topping for a halved head of chicory, for example). This time we added a monkfish and shrimp dish and a sliced of pork loin. All lovingly done. And to deduct the price of a bottle of wine for a minor mess-up with the booking shows pretty classy customer service. If you've not been, give it a try, and a pocket-size delight.
A very small, cosy restaurant that was the perfect place for five friends to spend the evening. The wine on special was perfectly full-bodied, all of the food was delicious (braised oxtail croquettes, anchovy butter, wild mushroom tagliatelle, feta mousse...). The service was very attentive. Overall the evening was lovely, and we will definitely be back!
I wouldn’t have found this little gem had it not for the OpenTable. I was looking for a casual yet value for money place with original and healthy food near Angel area to meet an old friend. I was really pleased that I found this place. The lunch menu for £10 consists of four different dishes to choose from all of which sounds healthy and interesting. My friend and I chose poached sardine fillets of buttered cale, spinach and ricotta malfatti and sourdough bread with anchovie butter as a side which were all delicious. A bottle of French white was reasonable and went well with food. This is a tiny cafe restaurant and wooden tables and chairs are not so comfortable and not suitable for a big group. But service friendly and not pushy. I definitely come back again.
Easy evening celebrating my fathers birthday. Met expectations, thankyou
Delicious food and lovely service. Wonderful little restaurant. X
Hidden gem in Islington. Great food and service
Amazing small sharing plates of food. Ambiance is far nicer upstairs so maybe request in booking. Delicious food and great wine (although not a massive wine list). Would definitely go again!
Excellent lunch, imaginative main and side dishes.
Slight wrinkle in that OpenTable did not know that the restaurant does not open until 6:00PM, but the host called us well in advance to ask if we still wanted to dine with them. Our 7:30 curtain at Sadler's Wells theater made it essential to dine from 6:00PM to 7:10PM, and we had a wonderful meal, including dessert (but we elected to skip coffee) in that amount of time - without rushing. Superb service made that possible. The food was magnificent, no wonder it's so hard to book. Also, there are only about 12 or 15 tables! It was a great pleasure to eat at Oldroyd.
Absolutely superb food.
£10 lunch was delicious
Yes, would absolutely recommend, the food was outstanding, had the Hake and Malfatti, both were amazing dishes, try and share everything as it's worth a taste.
Amazing food and service! Everything was perfect, especially the grapefruit gin and tonic!
Lovely little restaurant but the food was ultimately unremarkable. There are plenty of other London restaurants that make a more memorable meal. Not sure I understand why it’s so highly rated.
Cosy little spot in Angel. Can be a bit too crowded when the place is full. Even we sat on a different table but still like we were sharing the table. The special steak was cooked to perfection though little cold when came to the table. Delicious cocktails and reasonable price.
Good food experience from a limited menu. Service so-so.
We ate in the small first floor dining room. Tables are very closely packed, and as a couple in such a space dominated by 2 lively groups (4 & 6 respectively), we did not find the experience particularly comfortable. We ordered an aperitif and asked for the food to be held until we had finished it. The first item arrived with the drinks. We do not find the "it'll come as & when the kitchen's ready" approach particularly appealing. Nor do we think that any hot food benefits from being decanted onto small, stone-cold tea plates.
This is a great little place. Consistently good food on small plates of a good size! Service is always friendly and helpful and the buzz is good without being overwhelming. The food is distinctive and interesting. Monday is vegetarian night but worth a try even if you usually eat meat - it will educate you about how good vegetarian food can be. I’ll be back - if I can get a table...
Small portions, used to be better value for money - lunch menu price has increased and is less competitive with other local restaurants. Very tasty though
Good food, lovely staff, but the upstairs could be more characterful
Interesting and tasty food. I went on a Sunday evening and so it was quieter. For me, it would be too much on a busy evening as the tables are very close together. For others, I’m sure that wouldn’t be a problem
Great little place for a tasty lunch w healthy and fresh products!
Had a lovely meal of sharing plates with family. Exceptional ox cheeks but great all round. Cosy atmosphere and attentive service. All at a reasonable price
Very good food .. small quiet place near angel .. go and enjoy
Poor. No menu available when I arrived, and the food, though food, is rather overpriced.
Smaller than expected , tables quite close together and extremely small, had to place wine bottle on floor under the table just to accommodate plates.
Noise level became unbearable as everyone is more or less sitting on top of each other.
However very friendly staff and excellent service from our waitress
A cosy and intimate space where food is designed to be shared. It wasn't full when we were there but can imagine you would get to know your adjoining table diners quite well as it is really small. This isn't a problem though as it's the kind of place where different tables share what they've ordered, give their opinions and inspire others. Lots of decadent flavours so a place to indulge for sure.
A nice little restaurant with a creative cuisine. We will come back !
I have to stop coming to this place so often as I don’t want to get bored of it, but for now I think I.m addicted. It’s tiny and fun with inventive and delicious Italian food. The best on Upper Street. Great things come in small packages.
The food was ok but over-priced for the portion. Staff were friendly but the place is small.
Good but not excellent. Fine British cuisine with good ingredients. By far the best dish was the lamb which was excellent. The other dishes were fine but did not bowl me over.
The space is tiny - as is the kitchen. They do struggle to bring out sharing dishes in a meaningful order and some dishes were quite bland- the croquetas, the lamb...
Lunch offer is fantastic.
Awesome food and awesome service. Definitely be back!
Service was perfect and all the staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and the atmosphere cozy! Will definitely be back
I love everything about Oldroyd. Small cosy place, small delicious menu, great staff.
