Parker’s Tavern serves modern British comfort food sourced from field, fen and England’s seas.
The menu changes with the seasons, every dish representing a return to good, unpretentious British cooking, conjured by a spectacular chef.
A different and interesting menu, which all of our party enjoyed.
Not really value for money but a nice evening out. The vegetarian option was good but the meat was disappointing because it was overcooked. The service was nice. Overall just too expensive for what you get.
It was the first meal out for my husband and I without our two children who are living it up in Switzerland and Italy skiing !! The service, the food and the ambience was just perfect from the lovely cocktail to start in the tranquil library then into the cosy open plan restaurant for delicious roast beef and all the trimmings. We definitely be visiting again maybe with the children or maybe not !!!😀
Outstanding food and service. Our first visit for dinner and we will be back - probably for lunch, dinner and afternoon tea! Thank you Parker’s Tavern
We arrived early for a drink before our meal. Our first drinks were served swiftly and they were very good. We made ourselves known at the time of our table booking to be told the table was ready. We finished our drinks and went to be seated, then we were told our table wasn’t ready. My husband decided to order drinks to take to the table, he waited at the bar for 15 minutes without even being acknowledged. A very poor show considering each time a drinks order is placed, a service charge is added to the bill. The space between the tables was very tight. I’m a size 10 and couldn’t get between the tables without significant disruption to the couple on the table next to us. The waitress left us with the menu. When she came back to take our order it was at that point she advised us of the pie of the day, the soup, or catch of the day, (I wasn’t able to hear clearly, due to the noise) and an item which wasn’t available. Naturally, this should have been advised when we were given the menus. They were exceptionally busy in the bar and restaurant and we felt that the staff were stretched and unable to provide the service we expected. The starters arrived and were fine. The mains however were disappointing. The kale served with the lamb was inedible due to the amount of salt it had been ‘seasoned’ with. This was the same for the 2 side portions of spinach, and the duck was also over salted. The pie and the lobster macaroni were fine. The reason we didn’t complain during the meal was because not a single member of staff came over to our table after the food had been delivered. We would have expected to have had our wine and water topped up during our meal and to be asked if everything was ok. Shame, especially as a further service charge is added to the bill. We did let one of the supervisors/managers know and although the over salted kale and spinach hadn’t been eaten she still questioned our feedback. A small reduction to the bill was made.
Surroundings, atmosphere and service all first class. Food was lacklustre and overpriced. The food offering is completely at odds with comprehensive wine list.
This was our first visit to Parker's Tavern and we really enjoyed lunch there. It is a nice environment with a good ambience. The menu choice was interesting and the food we had was perfectly cooked, very tasty and nicely presented. The wine list was good. We will go back when we are next in Cambridge.
Competent cooking, quality ingredients, varied menu and good service. Traditional brasserie style.
Good food and excllent service. Library was nice to have a drink in before dinner and all the staff were extremely helpful.
Lovely food but noisy atmosphere and tables very close togethers
Nicely done refurb of the University arms. Parker’s has kept the look of a Victorian bar but updated. Nice menu with plain or fancy food as you prefer. Wines a bit pricy but you pay for location.
Tables a little close together but in all a lovely meal.
This place adds weight and quality to the choice of restaurants in Cambridge. The food was served quickly and efficiently. A pie with a blackbird funnel went down very well and the veggie tarte tatin was delicious.
Lots of fresh greens too. The staff were charming and the ambience comfortable and relaxed. Spacious yet cosy - how clever! Above all we could hear ourselves talk which was especially important on this occasion as we were entertaining a friend from abroad.
Overall it was excellent, although we did have to wait 20 minutes for our table to be available.
We went for the Valentines meal. It was massively overpriced and really not the nicest. It was good food, but for what we were paying I expected a whole lot more. The servers were great and even though we’re clearly very busy were accommodating. Still we won’t be going there again. A shame really.
I guess Valentine's day is not a great choice for first trying a restaurant, but we've been doing it for 34 years. It was full of couples, really packed in, and all arriving at different times. The staff seemed to have no note of who arrived when with some people being served fairly quickly and some of us being ignored for more tha 1/2 an hour before being offered the wine menu (actually we borrowed it from the people sitting next to us). It took another 20 mins before we asked again for our wine. The staff said they couldn't find the bottle but since the people sitting next to us had had the same bottle we were a bit bemused by that! Our food arrived fairly quickly after that but not for the people sitting next to us who stiill had to wait. Our starters were quite nice but my husband's fish was really dry and my salad was dead sea salt tasting. The pudding was also nice. Overall a bad day for them I believe - tried too much. However, the cocktails were as nice as always!
I know it was Valentine's day when we visited So I expected it to be busy, which it was although I was disappointed at how close the tables were to each other.
They were so close that I could hear the conversation of each table either side & when I bent down to pick up my napkin from the floor, I actually elbowed the gentleman next to me!! This was our first visit & had my expectations.
The atmosphere was lovely, the tavern was tastefully decorated & the staff were attentive.
We did have to wait about 30 mins for our order to be taken & our complimentary cocktail given...
We also had to wait around 30 mins for the pudding to arrive which meant that the coffee arrived before the pudding...
I would visit again in the hope that there would be more space in between the tables.
Perfect all round meal just service was a bit slow 45mins to get our drinks and food order
Lovely setting and very attentive staff. Perfect valentines dinner.
Everything about our lunch was great, apart from our two main courses, which were disappointing. I had the lobster macaroni, not cheap st £19. It was not very nice at all. The ice cream sundaes were some compensation.
It was my 43rd birthday and my lovely wife took the day off to be with me! After taking the kids to school, she asked: “Why don’t we go to Parker’s Tavern”? Well, best idea ever. We were welcomed by a lovely lady, VIP style! She showed us our table and both our waiters were amazing, with just the enough amount of right talk with a brief history about the place and its surroundings. The food! Wow.... just amazing! From the starters, to the mains and ultimately the desserts! All of that with a great Prosecco! It is not a Michelin starred restaurant but everything from the welcome, the food and the service are all within the range! A special thanks to our waiter Mr Luis Miguel, a real gentlemen and a pleasure to talk to. Price? £99 all together, what I do consider quite reasonable for our level of satisfaction! Will come again, no doubt!
A lovely meal. The roasted lamb rump was particularly stunning.
The first time my wife and I came here to eat was for an evening meal which was most excellent. This last time we brought a couple of friends and went for Sunday lunch, we had a great meal with attentive service and will be definitley coming back. Compliments to the chef and all the staff.
The service was excellent.
Giuseppe served us, he was very funny and professional and made our birthday celebration very special.
Lovely restaurant with extremely helpful and friendly staff. Great menu, excellent choice of wines.
Excellent food, service & location. Will definitely be visits again.
Excellent ambience. Food was generally good. We had “Cut and Come again pie” which was a “tart” not a pie with no top and little sides. Service was very good. Would recommend but care needed with choice of dish. Prices mid range and reasonable value for money.
Very pleasant evening and would definitely go back.
A number of friends had recommended Parkers Tavern so I was expecting a lot but felt disappointed.
It is a great venue when you get past the Las Vegas style entrance.
The Bar staff were frantically busy making cocktails which meant that the service at the bar was slow.
The menu was interesting, the portions (I had duck) were small, the taste was average given the prices. The service was average - we had to replenish our glasses. It was a tad noisy.
I wouldn't rush back but would try it again in a few months primarily because the alternatives in Cambridge are limited.
The taxi home ordered through the front desk was cheap.
The food was delicious and the food service was good but the service coming from the bar was shockingly bad
Disappointed. Beautiful setting with great views. Lots of staff on duty but varying levels of competence. Expensive food that just didn’t justify the price. Shame.
Nice to see the University Arms come to life again and we particularly liked the easy booking online, the reminder, the old fashioned service of being shown to seating in the bar, the disappearance of our coats to the cloakroom and delivery of a cloakroom ticket. The meal was very good and if there was to be a comment it would just be there was too much cream in the creamed potatoes , but there was a clue in the title! Overall we were impressed and we will be returning.
Went on a Sunday so was pretty quiet - food was very good and great service by all of the staff. Wine list was well curated with a good selection and desert wines. The hotel is very nice too. Tables as others have commented are a little close, but on a quiet night the staff seem to make a conscious effort not to seat customers on top of each other needlessly, so hopefully on busy nights there's enough noise to keep some degree of privacy..
Very nice dinning room staff great food fantastic worth going
Lovely food and service, we did have a wobbly table which the waitress tried to fix but not very well then the waiter tried and it was a bit better, the excuse was that the floor is apparently not level, it was fine but a bit annoying, if you know the floor is not level then put something permanently under the table maybe. I would definitely come back again though.
Nice setting and decor but unfortunately some things spoiled our experience. We arrived at just before 7 for a drink in the bar and this was all very nice. Then seen to out table and placed our orders, the wine waiter waiter and all staff very attentive and helpful.
We ordered the lobster and smoked mackerel cocktail, this very disappointing firstly due it’s size and the distinct lack of lobster in the dish I counted 3 small slivers in mine and all for £16 each. We aren’t habitual complainers or that’s fussy about the size of portions, but this was ridiculous and we honestly felt swindled.
The other low point came when our mains arrived before we had finished our starters as the waiter quite obviously whisked them back into the kitchen. We then finished our starters and immediately as our plates where cleared the mains turned back up at our table.
This gave us no time to break between courses or order wine for our mains in time for the to arrive, really disappointing! All in all we felt very rushed and where out of there within an hour! We diced to skip desserts as a result of the experience thus far.
The food was tasty and generally the staff good, but we felt rushed and ripped off somewhat.
Normally good food but totally off their game for this visit - food was either average at best or had to be sent back. Shame. Great service though.
The full fine dining experience for a very palatable price. The food was outstanding, the service some of the best we have had, great wine selection and more importantly great beer selection.
Better than a lot of the London hotels for afternoon tea!
Good atmosphere/ beers in the bar before a very enjoyable 3 course meal. Would definitely go again.....
Excellent service, great food. Great setting, will visit again
