Was recommended this place by a family friend. Setting and atmosphere were really nice but food fell short unfortunately. Ordered 2 Rump steaks medium rare but came out rare borderline blue and cold in the middle. They blamed it on the thickness of the meat and cooked two new ones. Was a bit better second time around but nothing spectacular and definitely not worth the £70/£80 spend.
Wonderful from start to finish! Best service of our 10 day trip to England : ) The Christmas Crackers were a nice surprise and special treat at the end of a delcious meal.
Had an excellent dinner here on Thursday night. The atmosphere was lively and the food top notch, especially the duck liver parfait starter. Really good bread and butter too. The Hesketh Shiraz was excellent, although I thought mark up was a bit rich at £41 (£14 from your friendly wine merchant).
Service was good except having to wait a while to get the bill as it was hard to attract the waitress’s attention towards the end of the night. But overall a great experience and I don’t understand the high number of negative reviews for this restaurant.
Excellent dining experience, hosting a guest speaker from overseas.
Wonderfully cosy and the food was delicious! Great service too.
Booked well in advance and was impressed with the venue. Welcome and service were very good, at the right level for the style of business. Would have liked a few more options of wines by the glass.
The food was good, an excellent duck liver parfait starter, my wife enjoyed her Hake and the desserts were superb. My main course of Chicken Wellington was fine, if a little underwhelming. Lacked a little flavour and it felt like less of a Wellington and more of a Chicken roulade as it wasn't completely enclosed by pastry, but this was the only duff note in what was an excellent experience. Lovely touch at the end with the selection of mini-cakes with Happy Birthday on the plate for my wife, not original but shows they had thought about and read my booking notes. A solid 8/10, would have been 9/10 if the chicken dish was better.
Great atmosphere, fantastic food and impeccable service; we will be coming back for a special occasion.
Superb food with excellent service. Who would go anywhere else in Oxford?
Really lovely afternoon tea, a real treat. The staff were really friendly and accommodating.
It was my first visit and the atmosphere was exactly as I expected having heard about the restaurant from my colleagues. Lovely decor was in tune with the special occasion we've come to celebrate. For a set menu lunch it was very good value for money. Starter was a bit disappointing as both my friend and I had over salted hake. Main course duck with green lentils was good. Unexpected surprise was received with the bill - champagne and some wine was added, which we didn't order, almost doubling our real bill. We pointed out to our waitress on the mistake but she came back a bit later with another bill which included again some wine which we didn't order! I believe that after the first mistake she should have double check our order to avoid making any mistakes again. The third bill, delivered by a manager, was correct. The service charge wasn't included which we found to be fair. I might wait for a while in hope that the service will be improved before coming to this restaurant again.
Lovely breakfast .....great place for a girlie catch-up as breakfast served until 11am
First midweek visit and it matched the sunday roast, fabulous.
The setting was dressed for Xmas and was beautiful.
Food was great.
My only negative was service was patchy because one of us was gluten free. She had to wait 20 mins for her bread and another 10 for butter and only after asking more than once.
The waitress was a bit naive when asked if the chosen dishes were gluten free, replying"of course its salad".
Will return however.
As always an excellent dinner in superb surroundings.
Service top rate .
Good value because it is always a night to remember.
Staff moved our table as it was next to the loo door. Thank you!
Also, as it was my partner's Birthday the restaurant prepared a little dessert selection with "Happy Birthday" in chocolate. Lovely touch and made her evening. Very thoughtful
Food good but marred by dozy and slow service. Helpfully quiet
Visited for Sunday lunch was a fantastic meal but so over priced that I would be unable to recommend my university office to ever come back
I am hard pressed to say anything apart from Congratulations to the Old Parsonage for excellent food, service and ambiance. Dining there was a first rate experience.
Lovely room for brunch, good ambiance and overall the food was good. However my husband thought the portions small but made to look bigger by serving on a small plate. The toast and marmalade was served prior to the cooked breakfast, which I found odd and we were not offered more toast or more coffee. We were only given a tiny amount of butter for 4 people but were given more when asked for it. The coffee was very weak, my friend even asking if it was tea. I enjoyed my vegetarian breakfast. It is a great place to meet friends. Just wish that on this occasion the service/ coffee were better.
My wife and I had a very relaxed and enjoyable evening thanks to attentive staff, excellent food, and interesting wines, especially the Croatian white.
I have been coming to the OPH for three decades now. It has always been a special place. For, staff and ambience are great. The soft furnishing keeps sound down to a level one can have conversations unlike other highly regarded restaurants in Oxford. I hope it never changes.
This was our third or fourth lunch at the Old Parsonage in the past two months, and we find no wavering of standards. The food shows all kinds of interesting features, particularly the return to such old-fashioned favourites as ox tail (as a pie) and suet pudding (containing game) which I applaud most heartily. Starters and desserts are no less accomplished. Service is remarkably pleasant and efficient.
We enjoyed our meal, but were disappointed by the lack of ‘orange’ flavour to the Tate. The smoked salmon ‘sandwich’ was more of a burger and this was a very carbohydrate loaded course!
The service though attentive , bordered on being obsequious , such that we were approached at least twice for each course checking if all was satisfactory. The environment is very comfortable and relaxing, which is unusual in many of today’s restaurants.
Excellent restaurant! Very warm and cozy! Great vibe!
'Always such a treat' is what I wanted to say but it seems that was too short!
The atmosphere here is lovely and the food and staff were amazing.
Great menu, including vegetarian options, fresh seasonal produce, well-presented. Overall, food was delicious. Server was knowledgeable about wine list - don't always get this, so impressive. Friendly service. Also remembered was daughter's birthday without any prompting post initial booking.
Only gripes were: tables v close together - our was for 4 - lovely position in itself but placed v close to next table, which made dining for me v cramped (didn't help that chap on next table seemed oblivous to personal space!). Also, dining area became v noisy after 8pm. Slightly difficult to attract attention of servers later on to settle bill, when restaurant full.
Overally, lovely meal and would recommend to others.
The Old Parsonage Grill is a restaurant worth visiting for its ambience and a decent plate of food. The service is outstanding and the ambiance is truly interesting and venerable. The food was competently prepared and well presented, it was good. The restaurant can be noisy when full and not the easiest to navigate if elderly or disabled.
As always my experience at The Old Parsonage was utterly faultless
Excellent food and service, a real treat.
Slightly noisy and the chairs are too low for someone 6' tall.
The staff were very friendly, gentle and attentive. The food was very nice and came out in good time and was fresh and hot. The ambience is cosy and intimate. The dark wall paints, the fireplaces, furniture all add to this. The drawbacks were that when we arrived at 5:30pm we were not presented with the set menu (which ends at 6pm), which I had to ask for. The table staff were perhaps a little too attentive, with three different people approaching our table in a very short span of time. At the same time, the staff seemed to lack confidence. Overall, it is a very nice place and I would definitely come again.
This has become my favourite place to eat in Oxford. Everything about it is lovely and they made a special effort to give my daughter a birthday dessert! Will return soon.
Great service, good food and not overly expensive.
My only improvement would be with the starter menu. My wife found it difficult to find something. More than made up by very good desserts.
Well worth a visit.
It was an anniversary Tea; just elegant, not overpowering.
I had a £28 rump steak that was very fatty and the chips inedible as they were like blocks and hard so very underwhelmed
Excellent meal with two children who were very well catered for despite a blip with provision of milk. My appalling diet was also catered for well and the fully functioning adults really enjoyed their starters and mains.
My salad choices were delicious
Lovely open fire and ambience. Tables by the window might lift the dark decoration out of a slight gloom.
Great service and ambiance. We treated very well with a free starter to compensate for a wait for our main and a free pudding to celebrate our anniversary. This only spoilt a bit by one of our dishes not being very hot when served.
Lovely Sunday lunch as always.
Great atmosphere attentive staff
From the vegetarian offerings to the amazingly presented partridge, every item of food consumed by our party of six was superb. This restaurant never fails to serve up a menu of interesting, delicious and beautifully presented food. Even the cheese course demonstrates a degree of care and attention that too many other high-end restaurants don’t bring to their simplest dessert.
The service was nonpareil as they say in the bistro. The staff are attentive without being intrusive and they seem each to possess encyclopaedic knowledge of what’s on the menu and how it is cooked.
I will happily return to this fine establishment again. And again.
