Petersham Nurseries Cafe Richmond
It is a place of calm, away from the bustle of London, that respects and is in tune with nature and positive living.
The Boglione family, who own the nurseries and live in the adjoining Petersham House are rooted to their blend of British and Italian culture which remains at the heart of the business and is reflected in the style of the food that is served. Petersham Nurseries Café is inspired by what is growing in our kitchen garden and by the produce supplied to us by our sister company, Haye Farm.
Whilst maintaining their passion for simplicity, flora, fauna and responsibly sourced produce they have created an unparalleled setting just outside of central London.

We were very excited to have a Sunday lunch in the restaurant as we had heard very good reviews from friends, but ended up being quite disappointed with our experience. The appetisers and starters were very nice, but then we had to wait for quite a while for our mains. They final came out over a 1hr 3/4 after we had first been seated. 3 out of the 4 main meals were not good. It looked like they had been under a hot lamp for too long. The two Monkfish dishes were very rubbery and the duck was quite dry. We would of sent the dishes back but did not have time as two of our party had to rush back due to the delay to pick their baby up from the grand parents. I really expect higher level of food and service from a restaurant which costed over £80 per head for lunch.
Exceptional service is a beautiful setting with amazing food.
Absolutely lovely evening. The food was great and the atmosphere was beautiful. Really delightful service too.
Delicious seasonal produce, well balanced menu and lovely atmosphere. I would say a little on the expensive side for the quality of dishes compared with other restaurants around this price point, the quality of the ingredients is great however. Overall an enjoyable place for a lunch though.
Lovely rustic setting but the fans were irritating - are they necessary? It was such a beautiful warm sunny day, not hot.
My duck was a splendid arrangement of flavours however the meat was very tough. I was chewing for what seemed like ages. The desert was superb though quite a large serve which was a bit unnecessary after such a big main course.
Unfortunately the noise level was really too high. I know the place is popular especially on a Saturday but it was too difficult to talk.
Might return but never on a Saturday.
The 55 pounds minimum charge per person was not explained properly to us. I’d suggest you to write next to “2 courses 55£” the words “per person” as ones could assume that is 2 of 3 courses in general per table and not per person. Aside from this I think that the food is quite overpriced. I’d find an alternative solution to the set menu if you need to make a minimum amount of money per table as explained by the manager: he said that because of covid you are forced to charge that amount of money. It’s a very poor excuse.
Fantastic location and decor. Perfect place for a nice lunch and a stroll by the river after. Recommend a visit
Beautiful setting and great food.
I wanted to do something special for a friend and her husband who rescued me from one of the worst days of my life. We had been to the Petersham Nurseries Cafe previously, and had enjoyed the ambience, but not the food., so it was with some trepidation that we booked dinner at my friend’s request. On this occasion, we were four for dinner, and I’m very sorry to say, it was a complete disaster of a meal. Firstly, there isn’t anything on the menu a competent home cook could not prepare. When you’re paying £90 for a meal (prix fixe), you expect more than fish stew (inedible and sent back as it had been on the heat so long the liquid had evaporated leaving an inedibly salty result), roast chicken, grilled steak, roast duck (portion size suitable for all four of us), and a vegetarian option that I had to stop eating as it contained a pepper so hot, I left for the ladies’ room with my eyes streaming. So, two main courses were inedible. We ordered two bottles of white wine and one of red. We were charged for two bottles of red and three of white. Keep in mind, we were only four people! There were no apologies, no offers to remove the price of the two inedible main courses from our bill, and my husband had to ask to speak to the manager in order to get the charges for the wine we did not order removed from our bill. The wait staff simply refused to believe we had only ordered three bottles. )WARNING: Photograph everything in case you need evidence! ) We will DEFINITELY NOT be back. Next time, I’ll hire a chef to come to my house and cook. It will be cheaper and better. Save your money. Fly to Italy for a meal. It will be better and cost less, flights included.
We met up with relatives for a belated birthday and anniversary lunch (pandemic postponed). Very much enjoyed the relaxed ambience, menu and service - a sense of space too, not crammed in. Beautifully presented foods with edible flowers. Surrounded by plants, flower arrangements, from the nursery, and eclectic furnishings under the conservatory roof blinds with the ceiling fans going on a sunny September day all made for a perfect outing.
It is always delightful to go to Petersham Nurseries - fabulous space, carefully considered and beautiful food, great staff. Would eat there every day if I could.
A lovely place and nice staff. Good food and great ambience. Ideal for a big party and an intimate meal. If only it were closer.
Lovely ambiance. Very good service. Food is reliably good
The service was excellent
I had been looking forward to visiting for a long time and I was not disappointed, it was a birthday treat for my husband and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. I would highly recommend you to take a visit
Very expensive for what you get. Felt let down by their food - just wasn't special enough. The amount of food was fine but was a little peeved that they sent out my main with a piece of pork that was 75% fat (I'm not exaggerating).
This is food I would expect from a gastro pub which would put you back £25 - £30 per person, not £80 for 3 courses.
Real shame was expecting more.
The food was alright, although the service left something to be desired. It was frustrating that the bill included a 12.5% service charge (which was exorbitant) and that Petersham seemed to view this as non-discretionary. Not a pleasant experience.
Pleasant lunch but not sure whether it offered good value for money. Our lunch for 2 of two courses followed by coffee and one small drink each cost over £160!
Lovely seasonal food in a beautiful surrounding. Was a nice treat.
A birthday treat, wonderful food, service and ambience, it really is a magical place and in Richmond close to the River walks.
It is a little pricey but food was fabulous
Excellent as always . Great food, wonderful ambience and perfect for a special occasion
Beautiful ambience sitting beneath vines on a summer’s day. Good food and service, but very over priced.
Such a beautiful place and the food and service is amazing.
We initially went to the wrong ‘greenhouse’ and we were approached by a lady who informed us that it was a private party and we must go to the main restaurant. It was a mistake on our part but we just found the lady quite abrupt the way she’s spoken to us. A little bit of politeness would be nice.
Amazing setting, seasonal produce and perfect service
Would go back immediately.
I’ve been to the restaurant at Petersham Nurseries several times and it’s always been a special treat. Today was also a special occasion, the food was great, our server Zahra was brilliant and very attentive, the sommelier recommend some great wine - this was all exactly what I was expecting.
What I didn’t expect was one of our meals (the burrata) to include a bit of plastic - but it did. It ended up in one of my party’s mouth and was probably packaging from the kitchen. While our server Zahra was mortified and apologised profusely I found the insincerity of the apology by the (female) restaurant manager while she was collecting plates to be incredibly poor.
The other issue I had was the pricing on their menu - which I have attached. In particular the entry for Ayala Champagne which is listed here as £16. We ordered two bottles for the table. While I appreciate it does not make the distinction as to whether this price is for a glass or bottle, I found their attitude and subsequent response to my query on price when we got the final bill was not what I expected. In my opinion I found their menu to be misleading, they did not agree and instead of trying to diffuse the situation they made it worse. While I don’t like removing a service charge, I felt like I needed to have it removed to show the restaurant of my unhappiness.
This is not the kind of experience I expect from a place where I’ve had such great times at before, perhaps they lost their high level of customer service during lockdown? One thing is for sure, I will think twice about going to this restaurant again in the future after today’s experience.
An amazing and unique atmosphere, great food and an impressive selection of fine Italian wines!
Absolutely delicious a real treat and we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere.
The atmosphere/decor/ambience are amazing. A very romantic setting. I chose sirloin and maybe I was unlucky, but for the price, it was too sinewy/chewey for me. I enjoyed the setting very much and staff were pleasant.
Over priced plain food, nothing special, spare your wallet!
The Petersham Nurseries Supper Clubs always feel very special. The food was exceptionally good (we had linguine vongole, beef carpaccio and Monkfish and Gurnard stew - all delicious). The service was most attentive and the ambience and lighting delightful.
Wonderful food ambience and service, fantastic wine selection
Went for a birthday celebration. Food was excellent and the atmosphere was really buzzy. Definitely recommend!
This is a fantastic place to eat, lunch or dinner. Great, food, service and wine. I travel 80mins to eat here.
Wonderful evening best Vongole outside of Italy!
Setting was beautiful.
Now that the dark evenings are here please improve the lighting as you leave the restaurant back to the car park. It’s dangerous.
Happy with the bill but found it totally incomprehensible. I like to know what I’m paying for.
But a great evening otherwise.
Steaks arrived with the wrong rarity; taken back & finally the right order arrived.
The steak was meant to be well cooked but there was still blood running through.
The tea was forgotten.
Not sure if this was the norm but service was exceedingly slow. Food took ages to arrive.
A sure sign when it’s too slow is when the conversation runs dry. It became arid.
While the meal was not unenjoyable, it was by no means memorable and frankly NOT good valuefor money-indeed extremely overpriced!
Since our last visit (some time ago) the menu has moved to £65 for a set menu of three courses. Whilst the venue and the way we were looked after are top notch, the food itself does not justify this eye watering price. The presentation with flowers etc is very pretty, but the main courses we had were simply cooked breast of chicken and fillet of pork.
Excellent all round!
Food, service and ambience all exceptional.
