What Insiders Are Saying
Want cutting edge fine dining at affordable prices? Pidgin's ambitious, experimental set menu in Hackney will set you straight.
This was our third trip to Pidgin for a family get together and it was as amazing as ever. The food is inventive and delicious (the vegetarian option as well - some of us ominvores were envious!) and the wine pairings are chosen with care. The service is friendly and flexible and I can't wait for an excuse to go back!
Pidgin went above and beyond our expectations. Having had our eye on this restaurant for over a year, an anniversary was the perfect time to visit. The food was delicious and the wine pairing was perfect. The extra additions not mentioned on the menu were lovely surprises and although it’s something to save for a special occasion due to the cost, it was worth every penny. Thankyou Pidgin, we will be back soon!
Fantastic meal, one of the best we've had in a long time. Knowledgeable staff, excellent service, thoughtful and exciting dishes that change every week. Tremendous.
Simple, fresh, delicious
Very interesting food, cosy ambience, good wine pairing.
The tastes were superb derived from cooking skills, knowledge of ingredients and their combination and sheer imagination that leave me in awe and that I could not begin to emulate.
There are restaurants which serve food that you think you could cook at home, given the time, patience and equipment. This is very much NOT one of these.
The wines were excellent too.
However, it is not cheap but good value for the superb food it serves
Oh my god! Some dishes at this restaurant literally made me cry. It’s like, “Life is so good, but everything good must end” :’’’)
It was amazing and actually really good value with all of the additional tasters between courses
Just perfect. Incredible variety of food, and probably the best meal I have ever had.
Amazing - another great visit/menu. Service excellent as ever, and the food exquisite. Never disappointed.
Amazing. Amazing. Excellent experience. Food was exceptional. We were the first to arrive and the last to leave.
Food was good, service extremely poor, aloof and rude.
Always enjoy dining here - they do innovative and exciting things with food here. Lovely, quiet place - very romantic.
Nice dinner for a special birthday. However, food quality was uneven - a couple of dishes were very underwhelming, while others were excellent. And, for what it's worth, portions are very small. Service excellent though. Overall, for the price, there are better options.
It’s a cosy and lovely restaurant! The food are amazing and come with surprises! The pace between courses was great! Although the ambience can be improved by better lighting and adding a touch of style. Would be perfect if the staffs are more friendly!
Booked a table for my boyfriends birthday. A cosy restaurant with outstanding food and friendly service. Both thoroughly enjoyed the taster menu and the wine pairing made it! The restaurant were able to adapt the menu so it was gluten free for me which meant I didn’t have to miss out on anything! The little extras were a great touch too.
This place is delicious. And I love that it's classy without being pretentious. Our waiter was very nice too - very important.
WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!
I was really looking forward to taking my wife to Pidgin for our 17th wedding anniversary. I had eaten at Magpie, the sister restaurant, a couple of times and really liked it.
So what went wrong? The following quote from a celebrated restaurant critic sums it up:
"There are 10 main criteria by which I judge whether my readers will enjoy a restaurant, and the 11th is the food".
The food was technically excellent, bordering on faultless. However, the portions were a little sparse and I ended up coming home and stuffing myself with fruit and chocolate - not great after spending £170 on eating out!
But the real shame was the overall experience: cold, indifferent service. No warmth or enthusiasm from the staff. Both young waitresses rattled off the contents of the dishes as they were served without stumbling or catching their breath. But, was there any interest in the food or whether we were enjoying our meal? Nothing that was shared with us.
The service, as with the food, was delivered without major mishaps. No downright rudeness and no long waits.....
The whole experience just left me cold. I eat out several times a week, mainly for work, and there are so many great new restaurants offering high quality fayre, but also with a friendly attitude which makes a completely different impression. Even if the food had been earth-shatteringly good (which it wasn't) I still would rather have the personal touch and drop a notch with the food.
The thing about indifferent service that really baffles me is that great service - even just a warm welcome and a friendly smile - costs nothing.
Good luck Pidgin - I am sure you can sort this out, the food is lovely. Maybe we just caught the staff on a bad night?!
Truly an excellent experience, i have eaten in many high class restaurants and this is up there but in a different way. There is obvious skill and commitment in the kitchen and i love their ever changing weekly menu. interesting combinations with good flavors and spot on cooking make a wonderful combination. The wine list is interesting and i mean that in a good way ie it pushes you to places and styles you would not normally go for. The room is small and basic but that adds to the experience rather than detracts. I strongly recommend a trip it warrants and deserves support.
Amazing! Loved the whole experience from start to finish. As a mushroom hating vegetarian, they catered for me with care and no judgement! Can't wait to return!
Outstanding meal again at Pidgin with really interesting wine pairing...love this place!!
We had wanted to go to this restaurant for a while. It’s a local gem and the food is absolutely fantastic. An excellent European/ Japanese fusion of flavours which were unexpectedlly brilliant. Perfect for couples but I wouldn’t take a group larger than four.
Stunningly creative and delicious food and great wine list.
really lovely - thank you! great food - LOVED the green tomato and jalapeño sauce - and all so beautifully presented.
Delicious, intimate and refreshing! Perfect treat night!
really nice menu, a total gem. looking forward to going back next time
Excellent evening spent at Pidgin. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Love that the menu changes weekly and would certainly go back again!
Amazing experience, fantastic food and great service.
Very welcoming and excellent and generous wine service. Some delicious dishes but overall uneven . Part of the dessert we found was not edible(tasted of milk gone off) .Inquired with the waitress who tried to explain this was the taste of fermented sake! When I booked I mentioned it was our anniversary but it was not acknowledged.
The menu did not play to my tastes. There was an amazing course of veal. The dishes surrounding that main course we're not to my taste.
We had a lovely meal here, the service was impeccable and the food was great. The tasting menu is good value for four decent sized courses (and some!)
Attentive, friendly service, creatively prepared food. Would definitely go back.
Very interesting menu, lots more than just the 4 courses. Would recommend for a special evening
Fabulous fabulous food and wonderful service. What is not to like.
Small restaurant with fixed 4 course menu without the razmatazz but premium prices at £49 plus an additional service charge. Food was interesting and flavoursome but was just a bit too foodie/trendy for my palate with most ingredients that I had never heard off.
Lovely food, wine and staff. Bit cramped. Luckily the next table were nice people. We hope they thought we were too. It’s not the place for an intimate or difficult conversation!
Pidgin more than lived up to its reputation - we will definitely be back!
Imaginative foods in unlikely combinations creating a transcendent taste experience. Mind blowing. Bread and “browned” butter were in themselves a new level of food that I barely knew existed. Every detail was perfect.
After all the hype, we thought it was time to visit Pidgin. The restaurant has a lovely frontage with a nice cosy interior. Foodwise, it was delicious but nothing special about it. This may be because the menu is changing every week and it doesn't allow the chef to evolve or improve the current dishes to another level. The waitress who looked after us struggled to introduce and explain the majority of the dishes and she also knocked over some of my drink and took way whatever left in the glass without offering a replacement until I had to ask for it. Overall - I will give it 7.5 out of 10.
Not as good as Salon in Brixton, but more expensive.
