Chef carefully prepared exquisite food in an intimate setting. He was kind and easy to talk to only further making the evening more special. Will never forget this foray into traditional Japanese cuisine!
This felt like a very traditional Kaiseke experience. Food was good without being outstanding.

Fantastic experience! The staff was welcoming and friendly. Each course was carefully prepared and carefully explained. The highlight was the tofu in sesame sauce, although each dish was excellent. Well-paced, attractive setting. The sous chef even walked us out to the Main Street and hailed a cab for us! Highlight of our two weeks in Japan!
Lovely kaiseki dinner - subtle rather than bold favors, some wonderful dishes (deep fried sesame tofu - amazing!), some average (our ‘main course’ was a random assortment of so-so dishes, with no coherence) - but come here for the experience. Friendly, characterful chef who explains his dishes - in a ‘local’ (read, bright and very Japanese), on a beautiful old Kyoto street. Well worth seeking out! There is no English sign so follow the Open Table map.
Exquisite food. Each course more interesting than the last. The chef, who explains each dish, is both charming and brilliant. The restaurant is a little hard to find, but well worth the effort. Not to be missed.

This was my first kaiseki experience, and it was absolutely amazing. I was easily full off the 8 set menu, even after a full day of touring Kyoto. The best part was the variety among the different dishes, including sushi and delicious tofu. I would come again in a heartbeat.

A notre arrivée on nous installe d’office dans une affreuse salle au 1er étage (décoration datée, très mauvais éclairage, moquette salle). Nous sommes redescendus et avons demandé au patron 2 places au bar. Il n’a pas essayé de trouver une solution et nous a annoncé que tout était complet . Nous sommes donc partis et avons trouvé mieux ailleurs !
Loved everything about our kaiseki experience. We made a Saturday lunch reservation and were surprised to have the entire dining area to ourselves for a good part of the meal. The food was delicious — you could really taste the pure flavour and freshness of each main ingredient. Chefs were warm and willing to explain every dish in English.
Does not cater to special diet. Requested gluten free and was told nothing could be prepared for us, even though menu states "tell us any allergies and we will accommodate." Disappointed, we left.

We wanted to try a Kaiseki dinner in Kyoto and heard that Pontocho Fujita provided wonderful Kaiseki at a reasonable price. We chose the 9 course 11,500¥ option. It was probably one of the ten finest meals we have ever had. Tanaka, the chef, explained the components of each of the 9 courses, which included many items that we had never tasted before. The courses included seven different seafood selections, Kobe beef, and duck. The restaurant is small - only 12 seats all at the counter, and it was a pleasure to watch the preparation and beautiful presentation of each course.

Amazing food, every course we had was delicious. The service was great with the staff taking care explain all the food to us - even using a specialist Japanese-English culinary dictionary to check unusual ingredients! Pricey but worth it :-)
This was one of the best dining experiences of my life. My girlfriend and I live in Chicago so we are familiar with lots of great restaurants.
Starting off we arrived at our our reservation time, but their opentable reservation system wasn't working so we had to come back an hour later. The chef and the team was extremely apologetic, bowing numerous times. We came back an hour later to have two seats ready for us amongst Japanese customers (something that was really nice from touristy spots we had previously been to). We ordered sake and two 9-course kaisekis. Every dish we carefully planned out and was attempted to be thoroughly explained in english. Partway through our meal the chef gave us two plates of o-toro as a thank you and apology for the earlier mistake for the table.
Later at the end of the night we had asked the team for recommendations for sake and one of the sous chefs escorted us to a place down the street. This was a memorable experience that I highly recommend.
Excellent Kaseki style
Mixture of different meat, seafood, vegetable dishes, all relatively small.
Staff was very good trying to explain, in English, the dishes and how to eat them.
Absolutely awesome service. My girlfriend is Chinese and the head chef drew out (yes, as in draw) the dishes in color with the characters for her. Best service I have ever had hands down. Food was good, definitely more fit for those wanting to experience traditional Japanese dishes. Add in the sake and it's good for me.

Truly memorable meal. Kaiseki is as much an art as it is food. Nine courses were beautifully prepared and presented. This is a meal for the food adventurous. I'm not sure what I ate though the chef had a Japanese English dictionary because the ingredients were unfamiliar, but it was all delicious.
A+ dinner experience. I highly recommend this restaurant when you are in the Kyoto area.

If you are visiting Kyoto, Japan, and you want to try one of the highest forms of Japanese cuisine, Kaiseki, this would be a great place to go. We really enjoyed it. It is on the "hot" narrow little street for Kyoto restaurants, Pontocho, and is much easier to book because it is on Open Table. Getting a reservation at the dozens of other little restaurants on Pontocho can be very difficult, especially during sakura season, since they are not on any English language centralized reservation service that we could find.

Pontocho Fujita was absolutely amazing. I loved Kyoto and wanted to go to a kaiseki meal while I was there so I took myself out. The chef and the staff were superb, explaining all the dishes and how they were made. It was amazing watching everything being prepared but even more amazing to eat it all. This was by far by favorite meal in Japan and one of my favorites of all time.
Pontocho Fujita is a great place for a first-timer to Kaiseki meals. It's tucked away in a food district in Kyoto but isn't too hard to fine with the help of google maps and images.
Once you arrive, the service was impeccable. We arrived for the last reservation of the night so we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. This made the dining experience very intimate as the head chef dedicated a lot of time explaining not only the ingredients of each dish, but the history and inspiration behind it.
On top of this, we were amazed by the dedication of the head chef to explain each dish in English even though he wasn't fluent. He even went as far as to pull out a Japanese-English food dictionary and challenged his assistant chefs to speak in English as well.
Overall, this was easily among the top 5 dining experiences in my life and was worth every penny. We choose a 8 course tasting menu ~9800Yen and every dish was delicious and well thought out. We definitely recommend this place for anybody to try.
