A pre theatre meal with a discount voucher. The staff and service were top notch and we really enjoyed our main courses of swordfish and burger with sweet potato fries . Unfortunately although my plum crumble pudding was delicious my friends chocolate brownie was extremely dry and she couldn’t eat it. We did mention this to the waiter but it was still included in the bill. I don’t think I would go again unless I had a discount as it is quite expensive but then I guess it is in summertown !

Super service where our requests were catered for despite not being on the menu. The food was delicious, I had lamb that melted in my mouth and my partner had chicken that was really well cooked. The only thing I would say is the portions are quite small so don’t be afraid to get a starter first or a tasty bowl of bread and olives and a dipping pot of aioli!

All went well. The food was good, but but not cheap, and slightly bigger portions would have been welcome. Friendly and efficient service.

Excellent pre theatre meal if going to the Northwall Arts Centre especially with 25% off the food on showing the theatre tickets!

Our booking for five family and friends was easy to make, we arrived a little early, but they were ready for us, and looked after us really well. Even when an unexpected sixth person arrived for our party, we were looked after and another seat easily found. The food was excellent and the service was extremely efficient and friendly. Very enjoyable and I will be going again.

Good place for an evening meal about 1m on Banbury Road, off the centre of Oxford, in Summertown - a trendy upmarket area [just look at the estate agents there!]. We booked ahead for a Saturday evening family meal - just as well because it got seriously busy [mid November] and casual customers had to be turned away. Portabella has good, friendly and attentive waiters and waitresses. Wine list was ok as well - not too long and precious. Jose pushed his native rioja but we held out for their really good Nero D'Avola, the best I've had in a long while. Food was excellent and not too long to wait.. All in all a good experience and we would recommend it. Not cheap, roughly £30 - £40 per head, with wine and no starters....But Oxford doesn't really do cheap.

The Portabello reminded me of restaurants on Sunset Boulevard in LA.
Stylish, relaxed, great ambience, excellent comfort food and good value.
Definitely not typical of Oxford and therefore, quite a find.

My only criticism was the lighting which was so dim it was almost impossible to read the menu.

Otherwise most enjoyable.

I went this restaurant with my daughter for Sunday lunch. The roast lamb was delicious and the roast potatoes were some of the best I have eaten in a restaurant. My daughter had gnocchi which was also delicious.

Simple enough menu not pretending to be anything it wasn't, good pricing. Nice beer and wine menu. Only down side? 12.5% service charge! Thats just rude. I would always rather choose to tip than be forced. Also never convinced the staff actually get it on card machine.

We were a little unsure about how our experience would be at Portobello, as when we arrived, we were not given a particularly warm welcome. We had made a reservation and were shown to our table, and then asked whether we would like any water. We were given our menus and then left for ages. There were waiters and bar staff around, but we felt completely ignored. Eventually I caught the eye of the manager who had shown us to our table and he took our order, then asked us again if we would like any water, seemingly to have forgotten our previous conversation. Eventually the drinks came and then after that, the service was much better. The food was really good - beautifully presented starters and we both had a burger for main course. Unfortunately, we didn't have room for dessert, but they did look delicious! The bonus for us was getting 25% discount off our meal as we were headed to the North Wall Arts Centre straight afterwards, and Portabello offer this special deal. Not sure I'd immediately jump at the chance to eat there again, but maybe we were just there on an 'off' day with the service.

Portabello's menu has been much more grill focused and not as imaginative as previously. While it's still a nice place to eat, it's a little more ordinary than it was. The service was a little slow and muddled when we went. Nice steak though, everyone enjoyed their food.

I booked portabello for my birthday dinner with family and friends. The manager was very helpful in letting my daughter put banners up and decorate the table. Also letting her do last minute decorations to the cake that she had made, as we had travelled up from London. The food was very good and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Food was fine, nothing exciting. All dishes could do with a sauce or some side accompaniment as all were a little dry.
Service was the issue - completely in-cohesive. 3 different waiting staff who didn't seem to know who was doing what. Tried to take starter away when my husband was still eating & at the end of the meal no one offered the desert menu. We waited 20 mins for anyone to bring it over or even ask if we wanted something, so we finally asked for the bill instead.

The service was good. I brought my friend here. She enjoyed her butternut squash pasta dish. I had a burger which was a little dry and overcooked. I will return again because i like the ambiance of the place and it is local to me but i won't have the burger again.

Lovely as ever. If being picky, the service could have been slightly better - the waiter really didn't speak enough English. But really good overall, and has been for for 8 odd years I've been going. Great summer lunch choice.
