Last night I took my husband here for his birthday after hearing some positive things, we arrived and there were only 3 occupied tables, the staff behind the bar took a while to notice us and the two girls in their aprons In front didn’t even acknowledge us. Bad start I thought.
We then had to wait to be offered drinks and we were offered water first before returning to take a drinks order.
We then had our meal arrive which was nice food, well cooked. But we weren’t asked if everything was ok, or if we wanted another drink, I was so disappointed with the service we didn’t stay for to wait to be offered the desert menu. I did give my feedback and the young waiter removed our drinks from the bill, but for me the disappointment was already there and what was going to be an evening out ended up being an hour and a half tops for 1 main meal and 1 drink (which we didn’t even finish) 😔
I also asked to speak with the manager but wasn’t given that option as he seemed to want to avoid my comments.
I booked a table for 4 guests and stated it was one person's birthday on the online booking.
Starters were ordered but only 3 presented, leaving our birthday person without a starter. Staff were alerted to this and her starter was delivered. We also observed the Bellinis ordered were not sparkling at all but flat. My wife ordered steak which she enjoyed but unfortunately our birthday guest's steak was very tough & chewy which could not be eaten. My wife tried the steak just to make sure our guest was not over critical but also found it inedible.
Eventually we were able to alert staff, he apologised and removed the dish saying it would be taken off the bill. However, there was no indication if they were going to replace the meal, so we had three people eating their main course whilst our guest looked on. Just as we had all finished, another meal was brought out to our guest which was a surprise to us as no one indicated that another meal would be provided.
By this time, our guest was already upset and had lost her appetite. As a positive, the venue is stylish and generally the food is good. However, the vegetarian portion was small and the service lacking.
Who is Powder and Magazine trying to attract? Feel like somewhere you'd find in East London - has that kind of industrial cool feel (we've just moved here, and liked the look of it for that reason). However if we're the target market, then powder and Magazine needs to up its game (actually I think it needs to up its game anyway)...came here for brunch...the waiting staff were incredibly slow and hard to get hold of, despite only 2 tables being occupied, the food was average at best, they literally laughed out loud when my boyfriend asked for coffee with a milk substitute (he is lactose intolerant, it's not a fad!) and didn't even bother to suggest an alternative drink (herbal tea, maybe? Glass of orange juice?), the music was really loud and cheesy. Dinner a few weeks earlier was better, though portion sizes were tiny and the staffing situation was still bizarre....shame, as the setting is gorgeous. Hasn't quite come together in the execution yet.
This was our first visit and we will be going back. We had the set menu which was good value for money but my husband felt he would have liked a bigger selection to choose from on the starters. The food was excellent, the staff were very busy but the lovely waitress who served us made us feel welcome.
Somewhere to go for a special occasion for sure. Overall great evening out.
Over an hour for starters to arrive. Mainly supermarket fare out of plastic packaging and re-arranged on bread boards. Almost £5 for a half of bottled lager, ordinary wine.
Main course ordinary, one of the party was left out ‘forgot, sorry’. Hastily prepared plate arrived several minutes after everything else. It was taken off the bill
Six or seven triple cooked chips, a spoon of coleslaw and a burger with a slice of tomato, two circular slices of red onion and two pieces of lettuce.
There appeared to be four staff on duty, 2 in the kitchen, 2 serving for about 40 covers. 10% service charge was difficult to swallow.
London prices should deliver London standards
Place has potential, needs a lot of attention, and fast.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere. Will certainly be returning x
Great food and lovely atmosphere. We will definitely be back and recommend to our friends.
The Sunday roast was delicious and a very good size portion.
as always staff and food very good &very good calue
Was very disappointed in the food small amount for value. Steak was over cooked twice, chips was still raw in the middle . Local pubs offer better meals and value for money. Found staff were great very responsive.
First time here service was good, place was clean and comfortable. Went for a wonderful lunch with a friend and food was wonderful and atmosphere relaxed. Would recommend to all to try it and we will be returning.
We went for a Sunday roast. The staff were welcoming and efficient. The decor was wonderful and different in a great setting full of history. The food was amazing quality and prompt. Would definitely return!
FOOD WAS VERY GOOD, SERVICE WAS OK.
HEH, WE WASNT IN A RUSH. BUT WHEN TAKING THE ORDER, IT SEEMED A BIT RUSHED AS IF PUSHED FOR TIME? HOWEVER AN HOUR BEFORE STARTERS WAS SERVED, A BOTTLE OF WINE WAS DONE BEFORE THE MAIN MEAL.
ANOTHE RBOTTLE OF WINE WAS OFFERED IN RECOGNITION OF SLOW SERVICE, AND AT A LOWER PRICE. SO FAIR PLAY.
WE HAVE FAMILY THAT HAVE BOUGHT A NEW PLACE ALONG THE RIVER FRONT AND WE ARE SURE TO BE BACK. GOOD FOOD, NICE PLACE, SERVICE WAS OK.
7/10 FOR ME
We go to the Powder and Magazine often and always have a lovely experience. The staff are very helpful and always take good care of us. Wheelchair access is great with an outstanding car park and accessible toilet.
We had a lovely Father's Day at Powder & Magazine, after a bit of confusion on my part, Frankie managed to squeeze us in and made us very welcoming. The food was delicious and we enjoyed every moment. We look forward to attending again and have already recommend to friends.
Came here for my 22nd birthday with my family, really lovely restaurant. Food was incredible - perfectly cooked, incredible flavours and meals you could just eat forever!
Great to see local produce used, as well as stocking Dockyard gin etc.
Only comment would be that we waited quite a while for our food - that may have been due to how hungry I was though!
Food was very good apart from the chips that were verging on burnt. We had the dockyard gin in our G&T but could not taste the gin as they poured all the tonic in instead of leaving it up to us how much tonic we wanted as other places do. Service was poor. One girl, it was obviously her first night so was understandable but the service was very slow from the others as well. Unfortunately it was very noisy, one group in particular. Otherwise would go again but probably not on a Saturday.
This is truly a special place.
The food is excellent, the service is superb.
Professional and friendly in every way.
Very highly recomended
Took a party of 7 for an early fathers day meal. The food was very average and the staff were pretty rude. Order wasn’t taken right and missed off a meal which we weren’t charged for in the end which is fine, but the food described on the menu wasn’t what came out. When we asked if they could take our dessert order after a long wait, they acted as if we were bugging them. Felt like we were just a nuisance. Wouldn’t go again.
Overall as good as ever , meal full of taste. Friends new to P & M, they enjoyed it too.
Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Amazing tasting food with good sized portions, great service the staff were really welcoming and friendly.
And a quirky addition, a magician that came to our table and entertained us while we waited for our meal.
Will definitely be returning :)
Second time of visiting this tucked away gem in Upnor. Staff are fantastic and the food is to die for. Cannot recommend it enough.
Embarrassingly I only live across the road from this gem of a place and I've only been for brunch and a coffee here and there. Great place, lovely area and the food was amazing, one of the best steaks I've ever had!
Will definitely return!!
Took my parents for a lunch on saturday. Impressive and delicious food - the set menu was surprisingly good value too. Decor was interesting, and service was attentive. Recommended.
Very welcoming and friendly. Although our food order didn’t arrive as requested the staff were very apologetic and quick sort. Not a restaurant you just come across as it is quietly tucked away.
A little gem! A must go place to eat! Contemporary relaxed dining with am inkeeping heritage!
Lovely food and great service.
Limited menu but all food was delicious
Great atmosphere, excellent service and the food was delicious. Thank you for a lovely lunch, we will definitely be back.
HAVE BEEN HERE TWICE AND BOTH TIMES EXCELLENT, MENU HAS CHANGED TO CONINSIDE WITH THE SEASON WHICH IS VERY GOOD. WARM WELCOME FROM STAFF AND WILL BE AN EXCELLENT FIND FOR ANYONE.
The staff were very attentive and food was good. We booked at 3pm on a Sunday so was a little concerned food wouldn't be fresh but this wasn't the case.
Good food, quirky settings, lovely service. Will visit again
Food was good value and delicious e, good service and attractive place to eat
Lovely food, friendly staff, a good way to end the week. Cocktails were excellent and there is a good choice of local beer. Will definitely visit again.
Second time we have been and just as good. Service excellent, food very good and great building
Really nice food and friendly service the only thing I don’t like is a 12%service charges I always tip anyway just don’t like it forced on me.
This was our first visit to Powder & Magazine despite living very close by. We were pleasantly surprised by the location and overall look and feel of the place. The service was great and the staff were very friendly. Our only negative comment is regarding the menu, it was a warm summers day yet there were no real light choices on the menu for lunch and whilst the menu looked very nice it was more of an evening bistro menu and a few salad or pasta options would have been nice. It is also fairly expensive for a lunch menu. The food we had was however very tasty and nicely presented. I think if they revisit the lunchtime menu they will get a lot more custom!
Had breakfast at this little gem on Saturday. Food was amazing, service was brilliant, would highly recommend.
Food was excellent.
Excellent food, attentive staff and very good value for money. I would highly recommend this restaurant for all occasions. An excellent addition to the local dining experience and a very pleasant dining venue for the Upnor area.
First time we’ve been & loved it.
Great food, nice atmosphere & setting & excellent service, will definitely be returning.
A busy evening but food and service great as usual
