Great food in a nice converted pub with a lot of parking. All in all a good meal
Very quiet on the day and service and food were great.
Great service and a good menu, very convienent for anyone using the M25 in the Watford.. Amersham area
Fabulous lunchtime meal - would definitely recommend.
Haven’t been to The Gate for a meal for a while but have used the bar area a couple of times this year and the ambience and wine list are good. I wanted a light lunch so chose the vegetarian flatbread. It took almost 45 minutes to arrive and what was served was terrible, dry and over cooked. There was only about a tablespoon of topping- aubergine, onion and miso- spread in the middle of the overly crisp bread. No one came to ask if the meal was ok. My daughter thought her salad was average. All very disapppinting. It took a further 10 minutes to attract anyone’s attention to get the bill as the waitress was busy chatting to customers . I won’t be in a hurry to return to the restaurant.
Took my wife, mum, step father and 2yr old son here for Mother’s Day and so was really impressed. Service was amazing and the food was surprisingly good, especially for the price. Great set menu for the day, really good staff and just a wonderful afternoon. Will definitely be back
Could not fault the service, ambience and food. I would like the portions to be slightly larger though. Despite three courses..... I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, the staff were smiling which is a reflection on the running of the restaurant. Well done!
I booked on Open Table as recommended by the restaurant answering machine and the website. We arrived on time to be told they had no record of our booking and that this happened regularly!
We then had to wait 20 minutes for a table to be free. The staff were pleasant but not that concerned that this had happened.
Shame, because it's a nice place to eat!
Great food lovely restaurant
There were quite a few items missing from the menu when we went on Friday evening which was nuisance. However the staff were helpful and friendly.
New years eve booking online which was confirmed, was subsequently cancelled by the restaurant by phone a few hours later, leaving me unable to find an alternative at short notice. Very poor!!
Had lunch on a very busy New Years Eve lunch time
Service food & drink was great even though the restaurant was full up( all staff working really hard serving everyone)
Very nice lunchtime
Be back soon as great value
Such a lovely upmarket pub for lunch with a really appealing menu and such friendly staff.
I have been a few times. This time I took hubby. Sadly it was my first “not so good meal” I have had there. Maybe it was just the dish that didn t work. Weird combination and the flavours didn t blend.
Our local restaurant which we use often
The last 2 times we’ve been, the service has been slow
and the food not of the same quality and we would think twice
about booking again
The chips rather than being thrice cooked tasted and looked as if
They had been cooked and kept warm in an oven for a couple of hours
Presentation of all our food was poor.
We went to the Gate for Sunday lunch. It was a bar favourite of ours years ago and we went back with school friends to see how it had been renovated as we had heard good things. Have to agree it looks and feels like a smart gastric pub as well as having a separate restaurant. We are in the restaurant and it was a good experience.
The service was attentive and informed. The food was well presented in a clever way and tasted great- only draw back it was a bit pricey. I had a butter Southfield chicken and it was nice but not much to it for the £15.50 price tag.
Will go back and try again- will just pick better.
The restaurant was busy but we didn't have to wait too long for the waitress to take our order. She was very nice. The soup was extremely spicy, but the rest of the meal was good.
Lovely food and lovely staff as per. Thoroughly enjoyed my evening. Disappointed that the duck salad has been taken off the menu as it is a very popular dish and one a lot of my friends enjoy too!
Really enjoyed the variety of food and good service it’s not very local to us but will return
What an enjoyable lunch with my mum and nephew. The garden is very nice with comfy seats and cushions. The service was so kind and friendly - thanks Ali! The menu is fab and something for everyone. We had the fillet steak with a tart of onion, Stilton and walnut with great chunky chips and nephew had wagyu burger. Extremely well presented and delicious. This is our new place. One mark off because of the crazy flies.
Well looked after. Menu choice a little disappointing on the fixed price option.
Just perfect for meeting up and having Sunday lunch
A newly refurbished restaurant with a swish new decor. We visit every 8 weeks as a convenient meeting place half way between friends. Food was tasty and served in good time. The waitress was very friendly. Love the mini puds and a hot drink deal.
Well worth the visit. Pleasant surroundings, excellent food and reasonably priced. The restaurant was busy proof in its self it must be popular.
I have eaten at this restaurant on only 2 occasions and both times we have had the 28 day aged Ribeye steak.( not the cheapest in the menu)
Sadly on both occasions we have had to return the steaks as they were not of an acceptable standard!
We tend to eat only ribeye steaks at many good restaurants and therefore feel we in a good position to compare. I would now not recommend this pub/restaurant to anyone unless they enjoy spending all evening trying to chew and break down each mouthful!
Very very poor regarding the quality of your steak !
I’ve always enjoyed this venue but on this occasion my pie was too over cooked and dry. Won’t be ordering this dish again soon. Otherwise pretty good as usual.
We had a great, tasty lunch with very attentive and helpful service. The only disappointment was the pie I had - it was difficult to find any leeks! We gave feedback at the time. Service was excellent and as always the venue was clean and welcoming. We will go again.
Good food. Very slow service and long wait for food
Great service and food
We chose the Gate to meet up with family as it was equidistant between our two homes. We have met there in the past but probably not for a couple of years or so. The staff were very good although the service was a tad slow which is to be expected so close to Christmas as it was very busy in the restaurant. Although the Yorkshire pudding was amazing, I was disappointed with the pork to be fair. It did not come with apple sauce as advertised. The portions of pork and crackling were on the small size and the meat was overcooked, dry and had a weird taste which was not to my liking. I will definitely visit again, but probably go for the beef next time.
Food average - pale chicken and when we asked what the sauce was we were told "a sort of gravy!" Tea at £2.25 per cup was undrinkable. No tea or tea bag in the pot and when we questioned it we were shown a large can of English Breakfast tea leaves which apparently were put fresh into an urn every morning and then topped up through the day! We said we couldn't drink it but we were charged anyhow. Such a shame as we have visited this restaurant through so many owners over the years as it is a good location between all of our friends and relatives. Now we are looking elsewhere.
Lovely food with excellent service and a very attentive waitress. Was quiet mid-week, but still a lovely atmosphere.
Very poor food on recent visit. Soup was grey, salty water with a few mushrooms in it. It was accompanied by warmed up dry bread. Fish pate was gritty and unpleasant. Coffee was stewed and tea served in a teapot with no teabag or leaves and tasted fusty. It was Earl Grey, supposedly, but was obviously made from old tea. Pretty awful all round.
Service was exceptionally slow, food over-cooked - very disappointed! Would not recommend or go back.
Special of sea trout was cooked for far to long. Chicken was over cooked and tough.
We had a great lunch. I had the chicken but was disappointed it only came with fries so had to order veggies after I saw my meal. Kitchen though were excellent prepared a bowl of veggies very quickly 👍
My cousin ordered the pork that had veggies and all the trimmings excellent choice.
Will definitely go back soon
Lovely time here with good service and varied menu.
Have been to The Gate five or six times when we've been staying in the area and always had an enjoyable experience, but this time we were disappointed. Don't know if it's under new management but the place didn't look as well kept and the food wasn't as good as we've had in the past. Also we ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio Rose at £20.95 which we were told they hadn't got. We settled for the cheaper Rose at £17 odd. It wasn't until we got home to Newark, Nott'mshire and looked at the bill that we realised we had still been charged for the Pinot Grigio.
Food was ok but service is slow. Our teas, one Earl Grey one regular, were muddled up but we sorted it out. Shouldn't have to, of course. Have never eaten at the Gate without some blip.
Great venue, great food but they were slow getting food to table which was disappointing.
Senior mgt need to provide more staff as service is really poor. Such a shame, used to be a great pub
