Indian restaurant concept Raj is heading north of the river for its second
London site.

Founder Salim Sheikh is launching Raj of Islington in early December just off Upper Street. Similar to its flagship venue, Raj of Kensington, the 82-cover sister restaurant will focus on the same ethos – home-cooked authentic Indian food from different regions across the continent.

Signature dishes include The Railway Lamb Curry, once served on the long train journey from Bombay to Calcutta, and Murg Salli Zardaloo, from the Gujarat region, which are both made based on 100-year-old recipes.

The drinks list spans wine by the glass to spirits, house-made mocktails, and a selection of cocktails and gin. Sheikh, who has a background in fine dining, founded Raj in 2016.

Food was delicate and delicious.
Slight criticism. A hot plate would have been good as food could have been hotter(temperature that is!).

This is the third time I've been in the last few weeks; it's been redecorated and is now a relaxing restaurant to eat in. The food was good, and service attentive without being overwhelming. The cocktails are nice too.

Really good place. Good tasty food, attentive service and lovely decor. A bit quiet for a Saturday night- but not their fault of course. We will be going again.

Excellent food. From the basics of bhaji and chutneys, the best naan, to the lamb and fish curries. Excellent service and a great space.

Went there on a Friday night and trade was bustling with covers and takeaway orders. This place gives Gymkhana a run for its money in both taste and value. Would definitely recommend.

Delicious and authentic Indian cuisine, with beautiful presentation and attentive service. I loved my soft shell crab starter and paneer with prunes, pepper and pomegranate-both new dishes for me. Will definitely return.

Good Food, Good Service. The Interior Design was very modern and eye catching. Also the added bonus of a decent Aircon system making it an all year round establishment.

We really enjoyed our meal at Raj. They honestly treated us so well, really made us feel special and were so polite and helpful. The food is delicious and there are several unique dishes like the soft shell crab and railway curry. They were very busy the night we dined, so food did take a while to arrive, but they were full several times over so I expect it was just a one off.

Best Indian cuisine in london. Exceptionally tasty. We tried first on deliveroo and had to go dine in. We've tried a lot of places, but this is by far the best!

Arrived there having checked the menu online for food & drink (wine) - no sign of a couple of pages of the wine list there and the excuse first, was that the online menu was only a "guide" - almost 40 wines listed online which I would say is detailed !
The excuse then changed to "it's out of stock" for both the red & white wine we were looking for - was £19 a bottle and the cheapest then became £25 a bottle - anyone smell a rat yet ?
Was willing to pay a bit more than usual for their overpriced Mains but did not - walked out in disgust
Spent £48-50 at a restaurant (ALCEDO) nearby - wine was available @19-50 a bottle
Great meal experience !!!

We shared 2 starters (soft shell crab and the sweet potato/goats cheese tikkis) and 2 mains (Jinga Masala prawns and the Meen Moilee sea bass) - it was all excellent, really subtle, interesting flavours. Prawns were particularly great (we were warned that they were spicy, they weren't at all). Could hear lots of people around us complimenting the food too. Very decent portions. We used the Eat Out to Help Out scheme so all very reasonable, though they were quite busy so service was slow - we didn't mind, gave us time to digest and we were offered a drink as we had waited. All well managed in terms of social distancing too so we felt very comfortable. Lovely staff.

Me and my other half had a lovely meal here this evening. I don't normally write reviews but as this is a new place and so local I felt like I had to. The railway lamb curry was one of the best curries I've ever had. We also had the lamb biryani, chicken jalfeezi and a king prawn dish. I love a good peshwari naan and this did not disappoint. The portion sizes and amount of meat in each dish was great so I would definitely suggest ordering a few of the main dishes and sharing so you get a little taste of each. The presentation was nice and its so lovely to have something a little bit special on my doorstep. As there was only two of us we've benefitted by taking what was left home with us.

The whole meal was delicious and the fact we left with leftovers is testament to how much we enjoyed (I can't wait to eat more tomorrow). What's more, the service was impeccable - our waiter was attentive and lovely and the manager also took time to talk to us about the restaurant and dishes available. From the moment we stepped in the door we felt well-looked after and were greeted by smiles. I live locally and I'll definitely be back, would recommend to friends and family. Thank you and see you again soon!

The food and service were fabulous we really enjoyed it. We weren’t too impressed with the ambience however. This is a huge space with tables in long rows so looks a bit clinical and not too cosy and comfortable. Looks smart but not that conducive as a restaurant in my opinion.

Excellent modern Indian restaurant. We went there only on their second evening and were the first ones to arrive. It seemed few people new it had opened although people walking past popped in for take-aways. They would not be disappointed. The food was of the highest standard - from the poppadoms (light and not greasy) with homemade red pepper sauce to the Railway curry (exceptional), the Murgh tikka and cider marinated prawns and the salmon. They know how to cook seafood for sure. It was all top-notch, as was the delightful Pinot Grigio.

The staff were informative and very friendly and were prepared to spend time talking to us about the restaurant and the food. The best authentic Indian food I have eaten for a very long time - we will certainly return.

Overall it was very good. The railway curry was excellent. The spinach was simply cooked and perfect. The tandoori chicken was well flavoured but a little dry. The soft shell crab was fine but ordinary. It is something better eaten in Chinese style restaurants. We would suggest sticking with dishes that are 'classic' Indian style cooking. The only negative criticism was that the Punjabi salad was not a salad just lines of too thick slices of cucumber and red onion in parallel lines.

The floor staff were good natured and helpful.

We will definitely return soon.
