About

We have the pleasure to introduce a brand new bar and restaurant in the heart of Southend on sea. Situated in the historic building that was Ravens department store for 125 years. This exciting new project will have a basement bar, ground floor bar, first floor restaurant with bar and roof terrace.

The 4 floor building has been totally gutted and renovated to the highest standard. The business will operate with a basement waitress service bar, a ground floor bar with seating for lunches, a first floor high end restaurant with bar and a 4th floor roof terrace. We are focusing on the more discerning individual and aim to bring a high quality experience with an emphasis on customer service alongside fantastic food and drink.

first visit to Ravens as a restaurant. we were a little disappointed at the ambiance, a Sunday near to xmas we expected a vibrant atmosphere but unfortunately it was almost empty and the large restaurant was set up for parties coming in the following Wednesday. the 3 tables they had in were all on top of each other so with the restaurant being quite quiet it felt awkward to have louder conversations when a table of 2 were right next to us. maybe they could've spread us out more. Food was distinctly average, for the price. Michael Buble playing on a loop was a little annoying but I guess that's personal taste. would not return for a group meal on a Sunday. perhaps other days/nights are more lively.

Food was average, nothing to write home about. Portion sizes of desserts was very small. Biggest problem was the very loud music from the ground floor that was so loud we had to shout to each other to make ourselves heard, even though we were on the first floor.

First floor restaurant was lovely - decor layout and staff. Nice bar area upstairs. Food choices not extensive but nice - well priced. Excellent service and friendly staff.
BUT - go early -by 21:45- the dj set in ground floor bar was absolutely thumping- even drinks were shaking in restaurant - impossible to have any conversation from that point on . Shame as restaurant could be wonderful if not for noise level . I would return but for an early evening meal only.

Very friendly and articulate table service. The food is very good and compares well with most local restaurants. Large restaurant and almost empty when we visited for Sunday lunch. Not the best location to attract custom. They need to promote the restaurant more to obtain more trade - we only found it by mistake. Give it a try!

Not enough waitresses and too many bar staff. The music played in the restaurant was like something from the 70s. They had run out of certain meat. Not enough choice of food and the no cheese board for a grill restaurant? Wont be going back

Website said ‘full vegetarian and vegan options’ whereas the menu had no vegetarian mains at all and when the chef was asked he offered one choice which when it arrived was very poor. Seems the original chef left and they haven’t updated the website. It was also noisy given the rooftop bar and bar one level down. It’s just not what the website claims. The waiting staff were very good though!

I chose Ravens for Sunday evening dining, arriving early evening around 6:30pm. We opted for the Sunday roasts, pork belly and rib of beef. The food was good home cooked fare - nothing special, no wow factor. There were very few vegetables and when I am paying £17.50 for a roast main course I don't expect to have to order a side of vegetables to fill my very small plate. We had to request extra gravy as one small jug between two was less than generous too.

Our waitress was efficient but impersonal, when we arrived there was one very loud table of six, and a table of two - with the four of us she wasn't overly busy. We were the last to leave by which point all bar staff and waiting staff were nowhere to be seen!

All in all I found Ravens to be average on food , poor in value and mediocre as a restaurant experience - I was sadly disappointed.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch at Raven's. The starters were absolutely delicious, if a little on the small side. We both had a roast, I had pork and my husband had beef, and both were really tasty and the meat melted in your mouth it was so tender. The service was very good too. I liked the decor and there were a pair of musicians playing nice music.
Unfortunately, the place was empty. I hope it can get more customers, otherwise it will struggle to survive which would be a shame.
Possibly they will need to do some lunchtime offers etc., to get people through the door, because it is not cheap.
I would definitely recommend it.

When we first entered, it was a little empty and it did look like the restaurant was also kitted out for evenings or events rather than a lunch time location. I would expect it to be perfect for dinner or an evening out as it had a stylish bar.

Service was great, but the food was absolutely stunning. I couldn't fault it at all. Fantastic modern dining but with perfect portion sizes, although I didn't manager to finish the side of chips! The food absolutely made it for my partner and I and I would 100% recommend it. I would expect this sort of food in a top London restaurant. It wasn't the cheapest, but when you taste the food, I was more than happy.
My partner and I had a great time.

One small point. We sat along the left hand side wall and I sat on the sofa type bench seat that ran along the wall. The seat height was a little high for the tables, and compared to the chairs. I would recommend sitting at a table with just chairs opposed to the bench seat. But that is my only less positive comment!

I hope you enjoy as much as we did.
Thank you Ravens, I am sure we will be back.

The food was delicious and enjoyed by all. It was very quiet, hence the 4 for atmosphere, but I hope this new edition to the area does well.

Very interesting, innovative and tasty food. Fabulous wine. They need to improve their veggie options. There is a separate menu which you have to ask for specially. You don't know there is a vegan option until you read the very small print at the bottom of the main menu!
Wine list needs a lot more information. They don't even tell you the country of origin, let alone any information about the wine. The wine we had was great but more by luck than judgement.

This is a top class restaurant that served great food at fantastic prices.
Service was first class and the drinks menu extensive and reasonable priced.
Surroundings were tastefully done and the tables nicely spaced out.
Looking forward to the roof top bar in the summer. Although the cocktail lounge was fine on a chilly spring evening.
Great place and booked to go back

Came on opening Saturday to try the food and just generally check the place out - the food was absolute perfection - everything cooked perfectly and looked absolutely gorgeous! Cocktails in the bar downstairs also fantastic - especially the coconut mojito(s)

Service was great - just a shame there is no music in the dining area as it leaves a bit of a weird atmosphere upstairs in the restaurant - just hearing the music and noise from below in the bar - some light background music may remedy this and as this was opening night I'm sure they have already overcome this.

Cannot wait to return and sure I will be back very soon !
