The pub was busy on arrival. First drinks came quite quickly. Starters were about 30 minutes at which point it was explained there would be a delay of a further 40 minutes for our mains.
This was okay but our drinks orders weren’t that quick either. Prawn linguine was fabulous. Burgers average and the fries cold.
We’ll give the pub another go, we don’t want to judge on only one visit.
Hi Helen, I am sorry for the delay you experienced on your visit to us. This is not at all the standard we aim for and we will be reviewing the service amongst the team to ensure this is not an experience that is replicated.
We waited for 2 hours (with an 18 month baby having to sit in a high chair the whole time) after ordering our food for it arrive. We must have asked 5 times how much longer our food will be to be told every time “it won’t be long”. There was no apology or explanation. When the food did eventually arrive it was cold and dried up. When the bill arrived there were no discounts or any form of compensation. When we questioned it the waiter huffed at us. Will not visit here again!
Good evening, I am very sorry for your poor experience with us. This sounds far below any standard we usually aim for and is entirely inexcusable. We appreciate all feedback and will take onboard your comments in an effort to ensure that such a poor experience is not replicated.
Overall it was very good. I had to send my burger back as the bottom of the bun was so soggy it disintegrated when I picked it up.
First visit. We were warmly welcomed. Lovely pub with interesting home cooked menu & good service.
Late lunch/ brunch with family last Sunday, pub was full but we were greeted and seated very quickly after booking table online.
Menu was varied and interesting but without being overwhelmingly long.
Excellent service, the food was delicious, the staff professional and personable - I would definitely recommend!!!
Great space with interesting menu that caters to all tastes and friendly attentive staff. Ideal watering hole for a walk along the river even on a wet Sunday
Enthusiastic and courteous service at all times. Food good, beer good, ambience affected by shortage of customers (early lunchtime).
Unfortunately although we were eating relatively early in the evening (6.30pm) there were no roasts left apart from duck. We were not told this at the point of arriving or ordering. Therefore only one person had their choice.
Hi Sharonne, I am very sorry to hear you did not enjoy your experience with us as much as we would have liked you to. Unfortunately Sunday was far busier than we ever expected it to be and as such sold through our roasts much sooner than anticipated. This however does not excuse the poor service we provided you by not informing you of our shortages at the start of your experience, for that we are very sorry. I hope you give us another chance to show you how we really like to do things.
Completely messed up the bill and the food wasn’t that great at all. No chicken left either.
Overpriced for what you get. It was busy but manager apologetic
Roast was amazing but pork was very very chewy and fatty
Hi Soph, great to hear you enjoyed your visit with us. Our Roast Pork Belly is one of our best selling roasts so it is a shame you did not enjoy this as much as we would have loved you to. I hope you give us another chance to showcase our wonderful roasts to you.
It was lovely pub, nice and warm, good food too. I will definitely recommend
Hi Hasapa, we are delighted you enjoyed your time with us so much. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Friendly staff and a warm welcome but food not well cooked and poor value for money.
£16 for a mediocre piece of chicken, watercress and a small tub of chips is not acceptable
Hi Ruth, I am very sorry you were not happy with the quality or value of you food. We aim to provide good value for money in a competitive area through amazing service and great quality food. I am sorry you did not feel like we had hit the mark with your experience.
Lovely service and ambience! Shouldn’t advertise as 6 nations pub though.. small screen with no area around it for customers who want to watch matches. Just luck whether the table around it is free!
Hi Harriet, delighted to hear you loved your visit to us. We are exploring options regarding increasing the offering of screens for game days. We look forward to hearing you again soon! Many thanks, Team Red Lion
Friendly and accommodating
Memorable food, delicious and different
Would highly recommend after a weekend of disasterous service in Cambridge - this was a great place to end our weekend at!
Charming place all round
Hi Gemma, what a lovely review to read! It is experiences like yours that really motivate us to keep doing what we are doing. I hope we get to see you again soon!
Food was delicious, happy fast service, highly recommended. Booked on way with open table so easy.
Hi Janet, its great to see you enjoyed yourself, if there is anything we could have done to further improve our standards then would would love to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us! Many thanks
Really enjoyable evening in great surroundings with great food
Hi Bob and Jen! Great to hear you had such a great time, I hope we get to see you again soon! Many thanks, Team Red Lion
Very lovely place to have food, I thought it was a bit pricey considering I’ve been to other places with just as good food, but would happily return! Service could’ve been a bit quicker but I can appreciate it was a busy Sunday so didn’t mind waiting. All the staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful
As this is where my husband and I first met, we had been saying for a long time we wanted to eat here. Finally on valentines day we did and were not disappointed.
We were greeted by a friendly lady who showed us to where we were eating with an option as to where we would like to sit. We found a perfect table for us out of the way in the corner. We were served by Sam and the service was fantastic. He was friendly attentive and generally just a really nice person. We had three courses and all were amazing! This was by far the best eating out experience I've ever had with everything being 5 star. We look forward to returning soon.
Hi Michelle, such a lovely review. It is experiences like yours that really motivate us to keep working as hard as we are to make this beautiful pub a true destination spot. We are delighted you and your husband chose us to host your Valentines evening and over the moon that we were able to do it justice for you! We look forward to seeing you again very soon! Many thanks, Team Red Lion
Food here is always consistently delicious, great atmosphere, well worth a visit!
Great British food, big portions and a good choice of food. Only bad comment was it was a little cold.
This was the second visit with my wife and daughter and found it very disappointing. The noise levels were very high which meant that my wife who has a hearing problem could not hear our conversation. This was particularly disappointing as we had travelled 100 miles between us to meet up. We had to ask for my daughters Prosecco to be topped up properly, the menu choices were limited and my coconut curry was bland, totally lacking any curry flavour. All in all a disappointment as our previous visit had been fine. I do not anticipate returning.
Not value for money. I had flat iron chicken which was cold, more skin than meat. Wines hideously expensive
Fabulous Sunday lunch, lovely pub, fantastic rare beef ! Service was really good, all very friendly and professional. We were visitors to Cambridge but wish it was our local !
Lovely meals, helpful staff. We would go again when in the area.
Birthday meal with family and our dog. Very friendly and accommodating. Will def go again.
Family Sunday lunch good food and excellent service .
We wouldn't normally travel just under 100miles for a Sunday lunch, but chose it as a mid-point for a family get together. Table booked for five people, but seven turned up. The lovely staff did not see it as a problem, and swapped us to another table without fuss. Amongst us, we sampled the roast chicken, pork, beef, lamb and veggie haggis, accompanied by an impressive array of vegetables, Yorkshires etc., which were enjoyed by all three generations. The desserts, too, were delicious. A comfortable and friendly atmosphere, busy, but we didn't feel rushed. Would definitely come again, despite the long journey. Thank you.
Very busy and noisy and had to wait for food but waiter did advise us of this and it didn't spoil the occasion.
The ambience and service was excellent. The food was fine but I expected better quality for the price - ie puddings weren’t fresh/homemade?
Good food but too pricey, fish & chips, chicken and chips, a salad, two puddings and 2 small glasses of wine was £94!!
First visit to the Red lion, and won't be our last. Burger slightly over cooked, but Sticky toffee pudding one of the best I've had. Lovely meal & good service overall
Very good customer service. Great atmosphere but a tad noisy at Sunday lunch. Sunday raost excellent
Took for daughter's 18th birthday last Sunday. Booked for 1.30 pm and then it took 2 hours for the Sunday lunch to arrive of which one was too salty to eat so had to be returned. Hot water from cup of tea ordered was spilt down the back of daughter's boyfriend back and they forgot our coffees after desert. Actually, husband just informed me he didn't even get his in the end. Pudding took an hour too to get served to us. Staff were friendly, so that was not the issue but the food was mediocre and we saw people coming and going with food orders way after we had arrived. Been before and was a similar experience but thought we would try again as it surely couldn't happen twice! Overall for the £250 we spent on lunch, it was not impressive and would not recommend again. I work in Grantchester and would usually recommend this pub but not anymore.
Of all the pubs in Grantchester , the Red Lion has the best food. Having said that the potions are on the small side - a few more chips would be good. There is little choice on gluten free - is looked at menu online but things I wanted had been taken off menu that was actually available. The mains don’t have veg and it feels overpriced for what you get - avg £15 main plus £4.50 for broccoli side ? Service was ok.
Shown to table straight away. Good service by polite helpful staff. Food was plentiful and excellent taste and quality. Will definitely be returning
Food was extremely good. Best burger I've eaten in years - properly aged beef. Colleague's beef brisket and broccoli looked delicious. First time I've been to the Red Lion and I'd definitely come back.
Probably worth avoiding on a Sunday. Very crowded with disconnected service, several waiters taking our orders and not really delivering on time. It was hard to attract the attention of the staff, too. The whole place was very busy, they needed more staff. The meat in the roast meals was tough and over cooked, except for the pork belly which was a blob of mostly fat. The gravy was excellent and so were the desserts, but we won’t be going again, leastways not on a Sunday.
This was not an entirely good experience. The roast beef was sent back as it could be neither cut nor chewed. The chicken which replaced it was fine. The duck was OK but overpriced, this too was rather tough. The roast potatoes were pale and very 'firm'.
The puddings were great.
We were surprised to find that we had been charged for the beef and not the chicken and that no allowance - in the form of a free pud or other reduction -had been made for the problems.
The service was good and concern was shown at the time about the quality of the food.
We have been before in a large family party which was enjoyable - this was not!
Very good place to eat
