Red Lion - Grantchester
Set in the beautiful village of Granchester, our picture perfect, thatch roofed pub is a 2 minute walk from The Granchester Meadows and a lovely 20 minute stroll along The Cam from Cambridge.
Food was delicious, happy fast service, highly recommended. Booked on way with open table so easy.
Really enjoyable evening in great surroundings with great food
Very lovely place to have food, I thought it was a bit pricey considering I’ve been to other places with just as good food, but would happily return! Service could’ve been a bit quicker but I can appreciate it was a busy Sunday so didn’t mind waiting. All the staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful
As this is where my husband and I first met, we had been saying for a long time we wanted to eat here. Finally on valentines day we did and were not disappointed.
We were greeted by a friendly lady who showed us to where we were eating with an option as to where we would like to sit. We found a perfect table for us out of the way in the corner. We were served by Sam and the service was fantastic. He was friendly attentive and generally just a really nice person. We had three courses and all were amazing! This was by far the best eating out experience I've ever had with everything being 5 star. We look forward to returning soon.
Food here is always consistently delicious, great atmosphere, well worth a visit!
Great British food, big portions and a good choice of food. Only bad comment was it was a little cold.
Not value for money. I had flat iron chicken which was cold, more skin than meat. Wines hideously expensive
This was the second visit with my wife and daughter and found it very disappointing. The noise levels were very high which meant that my wife who has a hearing problem could not hear our conversation. This was particularly disappointing as we had travelled 100 miles between us to meet up. We had to ask for my daughters Prosecco to be topped up properly, the menu choices were limited and my coconut curry was bland, totally lacking any curry flavour. All in all a disappointment as our previous visit had been fine. I do not anticipate returning.
Fabulous Sunday lunch, lovely pub, fantastic rare beef ! Service was really good, all very friendly and professional. We were visitors to Cambridge but wish it was our local !
Lovely meals, helpful staff. We would go again when in the area.
Birthday meal with family and our dog. Very friendly and accommodating. Will def go again.
Family Sunday lunch good food and excellent service .
We wouldn't normally travel just under 100miles for a Sunday lunch, but chose it as a mid-point for a family get together. Table booked for five people, but seven turned up. The lovely staff did not see it as a problem, and swapped us to another table without fuss. Amongst us, we sampled the roast chicken, pork, beef, lamb and veggie haggis, accompanied by an impressive array of vegetables, Yorkshires etc., which were enjoyed by all three generations. The desserts, too, were delicious. A comfortable and friendly atmosphere, busy, but we didn't feel rushed. Would definitely come again, despite the long journey. Thank you.
Very busy and noisy and had to wait for food but waiter did advise us of this and it didn't spoil the occasion.
The ambience and service was excellent. The food was fine but I expected better quality for the price - ie puddings weren’t fresh/homemade?
Good food but too pricey, fish & chips, chicken and chips, a salad, two puddings and 2 small glasses of wine was £94!!
First visit to the Red lion, and won't be our last. Burger slightly over cooked, but Sticky toffee pudding one of the best I've had. Lovely meal & good service overall
Very good customer service. Great atmosphere but a tad noisy at Sunday lunch. Sunday raost excellent
Took for daughter's 18th birthday last Sunday. Booked for 1.30 pm and then it took 2 hours for the Sunday lunch to arrive of which one was too salty to eat so had to be returned. Hot water from cup of tea ordered was spilt down the back of daughter's boyfriend back and they forgot our coffees after desert. Actually, husband just informed me he didn't even get his in the end. Pudding took an hour too to get served to us. Staff were friendly, so that was not the issue but the food was mediocre and we saw people coming and going with food orders way after we had arrived. Been before and was a similar experience but thought we would try again as it surely couldn't happen twice! Overall for the £250 we spent on lunch, it was not impressive and would not recommend again. I work in Grantchester and would usually recommend this pub but not anymore.
Of all the pubs in Grantchester , the Red Lion has the best food. Having said that the potions are on the small side - a few more chips would be good. There is little choice on gluten free - is looked at menu online but things I wanted had been taken off menu that was actually available. The mains don’t have veg and it feels overpriced for what you get - avg £15 main plus £4.50 for broccoli side ? Service was ok.
Shown to table straight away. Good service by polite helpful staff. Food was plentiful and excellent taste and quality. Will definitely be returning
Food was extremely good. Best burger I've eaten in years - properly aged beef. Colleague's beef brisket and broccoli looked delicious. First time I've been to the Red Lion and I'd definitely come back.
Probably worth avoiding on a Sunday. Very crowded with disconnected service, several waiters taking our orders and not really delivering on time. It was hard to attract the attention of the staff, too. The whole place was very busy, they needed more staff. The meat in the roast meals was tough and over cooked, except for the pork belly which was a blob of mostly fat. The gravy was excellent and so were the desserts, but we won’t be going again, leastways not on a Sunday.
This was not an entirely good experience. The roast beef was sent back as it could be neither cut nor chewed. The chicken which replaced it was fine. The duck was OK but overpriced, this too was rather tough. The roast potatoes were pale and very 'firm'.
The puddings were great.
We were surprised to find that we had been charged for the beef and not the chicken and that no allowance - in the form of a free pud or other reduction -had been made for the problems.
The service was good and concern was shown at the time about the quality of the food.
We have been before in a large family party which was enjoyable - this was not!
Very good place to eat
Dinner on NYE. Tables too close together. Food was ok. Service was excellent. I’d go back but not on NYE
Good food and very good service. Only slight downside was children holding door to outside open on a cold day.
One of our regular favourites. We visited on New Years Eve for a family members
Birthday and all had burgers and fries which were good. The staff were really friendly and efficient. The table we were at had very low lighting and was a little bit dim for our liking (and poor eyesight!) but nothing major.
Lovely place to go for lunch with friends after a walk by the river over Twixmas! They also do fabulous roasts on a Sunday but you do need to book as it's always busy
Great place for a drink with a really good atmosphere and excellent bar snacks. Dining is average with a menu that is too large but with nothing being particularly great. Definitely keep coming but not to eat. Also much too hot have noticed this on several occasions. Save the heating bill.
Most of the food tasted good, but the portion sizes were very small - especially the accompaniments (chips, peas, mashed potato). The short rib of beef was mostly fat. The waiter admitted that the dish was often returned for that reason. We’ve always enjoyed the Red Lion in the past but this visit was really disappointing.
Very nice place, good food and service was excellent!
Thoroughly enjoyable evening, lovely selection on the menu. We tried a few of the Table treats before our meal. All presented well and tasted amazing as usual.
Great atmosphere, good choice of menu and experpertly presented .
Would highly recommend.
Excellent service food was excellent and Staff friendly and helpful enjoyable meal

Outstanding! From the staff to the food, everything was lovely!
Hi Lorraine, great to see you had such a great time with us! We look forward to seeing you again soon!
The food was more expensive than other pubs/restaurants but this could be due to the location. Service was fair but the food could have been a lot better. My wife's beef was almost cold and my friend's duck was far too rare (raw in places). We sent these two meals back. The beef meal was hotter when it returned (a new plate) and the duck was less rare (also a new plate) but still hard to cut so I requested a steak knife. Even so, there was still a portion of the meat that was red and gelatinous instead of pink and tender. My burger meal was slightly cool but I was too hungry to send it back. My other friend's husband's roast pork was OK but could have better if had crackling rather than just the skin. Dessert was sponge pudding and custard. The amount of custard was minimal (perhaps 2 tablespoons) and two of the meals were cold in places. My wife returned hers for heating and we were told that they only had one microwave and this was temperamental. they said that they were in the process of getting a replacement. We raised these points with the manager and to be fair, he deducted 20% from the bill. When we came to pay, the young lad on the till managed to assign our payment to another table, which necessitated us being refunded and the amount reassigned to the correct bill.
All in all, it is safe to say that we won't return to The Red Lion anytime soon. It was not particularly busy when we arrived (4pm) so I don't think there was an issue with an over-committed kitchen. The faulty microwave may have been an issue for dessert but keeping the food hot before service to the table and making sure poultry is cooked through is indicative of poor kitchen management.
Hi Dave, I am very sorry to see that we fell so far short of the exceptional standards we always aim for. Our Sunday Lunches are very popular and some of our favourite dishes so it is particularly disappointing to see we missed the mark with you. We appreciate all feedback and will take onboard your comments in an effort to ensure your experience is not repeated. I do hope you offer us another chance to show you what we are all about. Kindest regards, Management Team
Fab weekend lunch, good food, lovely atmosphere, and good service - just wish the parking was a bit easier! Will be back soon.
