Red Lion - Grantchester
Set in the beautiful village of Granchester, our picture perfect, thatch roofed pub is a 2 minute walk from The Granchester Meadows and a lovely 20 minute stroll along The Cam from Cambridge.
The Red Lion was delightful and food was superb. Ambience wonderful. The only query was how the food and drinks orders were taken at the beginning. Once seated the it was a fantastic dinner. We will be back of sure.
A very pleasant escape from the bustle of Cambridge, located in a pretty village on the banks of the river. Particularly lovely range of desserts. We had been a bit put off by negative reviews re delays in receiving food after order time, but maybe eating earlier helped? Polite staff who seemed genuinely concerned we were enjoying our food. But it was busy and therefore quite noisy in the dining area.
The food here is lovely but the service needs to be improved. More staff needed as there's not enough of them and it takes ages to be served anything. I found it very pricey for a pub £45.00 a head for Sunday roast with dessert and 1 drink. Overall nice experience but who can afford to do this very often with a family ?
First visit, food was very good but service was poor, main meals arrived with the starter! It’s great to see a relaxed dinning experience but our waiter was horizontal, had to ask for wine menu, after ordering wine just walked off even though we were trying to order a soft drink, check back done when meals were nearly finished. Will be back as food saved the visit.
The pub has a lovely ambience, comfortable interior and a lovely family garden area. We were there for lunch, the food was nice but nothing outstanding and all reasonably priced.
Great service and food but portion size too small for the money.
Good quality experience. We often bring guests because food and service reliable.
The Red Lion is a nice place to go. It's near to the Grantchester Meadows and there is usually somewhere to park. Unfortunately the food is at best mediocre. The menu is a hotch potch of different foods from around the world; some simpler and fresher dishes would probably be better. Great for drinks.
Lovely meal. Good service. Were very helpful with my nephew and his allergies. Would recommend 😊
Waited over an hour for food, which was nothing special. I make better roast potatoes at home. Outdoor garden is better place to sit on a nice day and play area is huge plus for kids and parents. Indoors is fine but reeks of middle class faux pub charm
Great place- good food, good service, upscale but relaxed ambiance and best of all, dog friendly.
Booked a table in the restaurant for our anniversary. Ended up sat at a tiny round table right by the door. The table was dirty and sticky. My husband ended up sitting in a very low arm chair that he couldn’t get up to the table and found it really uncomfortable whilst trying to eat a Sunday roast. We had to get the water glasses changed because they were dirty. The replacements weren’t much better. Had roast beef but got very little meat, I had ordered two additional sides , glad I had or the dinner would have been plain and the main courses weren’t hot. We had one course and one drink and left. Really disappointed, ruined our anniversary really.
we have been to the red lion on many occasions now but unfortunately the last couple of time we have received poor service with the same rude waiter this time he spent 20 mins talking to other staff and customers about his poker holiday after asking him to find out what Gins they served so we could order some drinks so off the the bar we went to get our own drinks bar staff ( joseph was really lovey very friendly and very helpful) back at the table our mains mains arrived after the most beautiful starters unfortunately the steak can blue not the medrare thats was ordered and the duck dish came cold both sent back and returned almost right duck still a little cold but besides that the flavors and duck cooked beautifully no desserts orderes as the waiter still didn't come back to our table and had to ask someone else for our bill after the poor services we begrudgingly paid the tip that was automatically added to our bill hoping the next time we return things will be a lot better and back fo how it has been everytime be have been before
We come back here again and again, simply because we are never disappointed. Great food, a good range of dishes, always friendly service - welcoming and really make you feel comfortable without fussing. Good value and a lovely atmosphere, with the different areas of more or less casual dining adding to the understated, warm, friendly environment. Top marks.
Really lovely to find a restaurant that is truly family friendly with very good food.
Sometimes restaurants that say they are ‘family friendly’ but are actually just ‘family tolerant’ but this was not the case with the Red Lion. The staff were all very considerate of and engaged with my three children, even to the extent of making sure we didn’t have a table next to a couple with two large dogs when I said my daughter was anxious around them. To top it all, the adults in the group got to eat delicious food as well!
Ran out of the wine we wanted. Long interval between starter and main. Incorrect main meal delivered to both of us, duck was very dry. Very very poor, disappointing birthday dinner for my partner.
Fantastic, courteous, helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Our waitress was amazing. The food was fantastic. The place itself is lovely. We will definitely be back
Went with two old school friends for a catch-up lunch. Had a great time. Service was great despite our many requests for info on the menu. Friendly attitude and discreet food service.
Poor service let’s down top notch food. We booked ahead with Opentable and arrived on time. But stood waiting at the hostess station for over 10 mins, when we eventually got shown a table our waitress took another 10 minutes to bring over the menus. We were utterly confused as the restaurant was empty with only two other tables and what appeared to be at least three waiters and one bar keeper along with the hostess. The lackadaisical attitude prevailed throughout the meal. However the kitchen saved the day with excellent food and drink. So a real mixed bag. If you are not phased by poor service then it is still worth a visit for the food is excellent!
A great place for a meal but roast lacked some veggies and was a bit loaded with beetroot and cabbage not other veg. Lovely service and ambiance
Food was good but pricey. Waiter was inflexible to a simple request regarding a starter and seemed quite disinterested in our party once we had ordered our main. As such, we decided to have further drinks elsewhere and didn’t order dessert as it wasn’t offered. In essence, I’d describe the pub as a pricey place to have a big standard evening out. There are better and more welcoming pubs in Grantchester.
Very busy as lovely sunny evening.
Staff and kitchen struggled with the volume and our order came out in the wrong order despite asking for it all to arrive together...
Serving staff seemed unhelpful/avoided eye contact where possible.
We were served Prosecco which was flat but staff very apologetic and new drinks provided.
Lovely atmosphere outside in the garden.
A lovely roast pork dinner no complaints about the food but it could have been a little bit hotter. It was only warm and went cold quite quickly. Quite a long wait from sitting to getting our drinks. Food came quickly and a nice atmosphere. Lovely to sit by the doors but a lot of pesky flies around the food table. Always one of our favourite places to come.
Overpriced food and drinks, and poor service. Shame as it was our first visit
The beef burgers were dreadful, tough. We sent it back and my husband was eating his meal after we had all finished and the burger was still over cooked. The service was slow. We had to keep asking for cutlery. No one asked if we wanted more drinks. My husband was asked if he would like a drink once his second m al arrived, but the rest if the table were not asked. Sadly we won’t be rushing back to eat here.
We have been there several times in the past and enjoyed it, but this time the service was very lackadaisical and uncoordinated.
Really great food and helpful, friendly staff. Would recommend
Food was excellent but staff were extremely slow even though it wasn’t overly busy. Manager argued with hostess who seated us right in front of us. Not very good image he set for us. Bar staff mostly ignored us when trying to get drinks
Good food, nice venue, polite staff. Quiet for a Sunday lunchtime, expected it to be packed.
Was told that about 60 in bookings were a no show.
Amazing food and staff were so helpful and recommended the best food choices! will definitely come again.
Amazing and thanks for taking the time to review us, its really appreciated.
We haven't been to the Red Lion for a while due to the lack of vegan options on the menu. Thankfully that's all been put right now. The vegan curry was excellent. Just a shame that the vegan fish and chips had sold out. I guess that's the price of popularity. We'll be back to try them soon!
Delighted to hear that you chose to dine with us again - the sweet potato curry is a favourite of ours and the vegan fish and chips is prepared daily so sometimes our little crystal ball is a little hazy! We will look forward to welcoming you back for them next time
They seemed to be in disarray. We were told they were waiting for menus to be printed (at 1230!) Extremely long wait for food which is hopeless when you are on a lunch break. Very disappointing indeed.
The perfect reward for a hike from Cambridge. Great Sunday Roast choice. Fabulous Yorkshire puddings. Atmosphere & surroundings lovely. Thank you. We will be back.
Oh so delighted to hear that you had a thoroughly good time - we love our pub and are glad you do too!
Vegan options - fab!!!
Really great food!
Waitress was lovely, but a different man delivered our food and then run away before we could ask for sauces. Also I ordered mine with normal fries and my husband ordered sweet potato, and this was the wrong way around. Not really a problem though as we just scrapped them over.
Most annoying this was prices on the bill differ to the menu. We did point this out, but no apology as such. Just asked if they wanted us to amend it. We just left it as it was and left no tip.
Really lovely pub, with quite special food at reasonable prices
Lovely walk along the river
One group was very loud and we were seated right next to them. We were able to move but only when we asked.
The waiter seemed stressed and a little grumpy.
Food was nice but the aubergine was undercooked.
Waited for someone to show us to our table when there was only one customer in front of us. 3 people walked past and then served us. We asked a waitress if we could change table and she went ‘you need to ask that woman.’ And pointed and walked off. So waited for the next woman, she just went ‘that’s fine’ with a smile on her face.
Ordered our food and drink.
Food came and chips were cold and burger wasn’t the hottest.
Waitress came over once we had nearly finished and we told her it was cold. She offered for new chips which we said no too as we had essentially finished our meal. Then about 5 mins later we received a tray of chips from a manager who said ‘this is from the chef’ which we said thank you to but didn’t really eat them.
Food was taken away and we didn’t get a goodbye from anyone when we left too.
The place seems very popular but on this particular day the service was poor we waited for a long time to be sat down. My sister was served with cold food she complained but nothing was done about it.She ended up with an upset tummy. It looked like there was shortage of staff.
The pub needs more staff. It is always busy at weekends yet the wait at the bar or for food service takes too long. It feels as if the place is winging it and there is not the presence of a manager who is running the show properly and professionally
Been many times before had great time must have been an off day. Flatiron chicken was fatty with no garlic butter, when I complained I was given a separate pot of half melted lumpy butter with big chunks of garlic in it. Burgers were just ok. Quite slow service despite it being relatively quiet inside although quite a few outside in the garden but lots of staff. The waiter we had for the majority of the time was actually really nice and chatty and reduced the bill by 20% and apologised.
Was very disappointed as food is always really nice and always a nice atmosphere. Would still return and hope it was a one off.
