Red Lion - Grantchester
Set in the beautiful village of Granchester, our picture perfect, thatch roofed pub is a 2 minute walk from The Granchester Meadows and a lovely 20 minute stroll along The Cam from Cambridge.
Great venue.... lovely food. But as the sun came out everyone turned up at once. As it was super busy sadly the staff were overwhelmed and there were a few delays.
We sat outside as it was a nice day. Really poor service. Kids burgers came with cheese despite asking twice when ordering for plain burgers. The plate of crunchy raw veg and dip for kids was a plate with a spoonful of Philadelphia cheese and a few badly sliced vegetables. Not good value for money.
Slightly slow service considering the place wasn't that busy. Desserts seemed expensive; £6.50 for a slice of chocolate brownie and a scoop of ice-cream was a bit steep.
Stick to the mains for good value.
I probably will return here as it’s well located and convenient enough, but the food is such a poor standard. The Sunday roasts are average and bland tasting, double burger dry and bland. Chocolate brownie was too cold and hard; should be served warm. The service was good but the place is let down by what I suspect as a young inexperienced team.
Great service and lovely roast dinner on a Sunday.
Food was excellent! Service could be better but I think it was changeover time and they were a little busy. Pork roast dinner a reasonable price but lamb although delicious a bit pricey for the amount of meat I got.
The food here at the Red Lion was amazing, and very good value for money
The food came out quickly considering how pushy the pub was
The staff were very helpful and cheerful
A good experience all round
Table of 6 for Sunday roast. Although the Red Lion was a lively place we found the service was very slow. Food was tasty but was not very hot we did return a meal to be reheated. We have been before and all was fine so we will go again. Child friendly a good play area in garden. Also dog friendly.
The food was excellent, very generous portions and an a good variety of vegetables. The staff were very pleasant. Our only concern was that we waited nearly an hour for our food.
This was our first visit to the Red Lion and we had a table booked for 4 people. On arrival we were not greeted, no one approached us and we had to locate our table and our friends ourselves. There were waiters and bar staff visible to us but no one approached to ask if we needed assistance or if we had a table booked.
We found out friends and the only saving grace was our waitress, she was a breathe of fresh air and made our night.
We will not be going again, based on this visit.
We went here for a birthday meal but the management have changed!! £27.00 for a rib eye steak that they sent out purple and cold with frozen ready made chips!! They also had 4 of only 12 or so main courses unavailable on the menu despite us being there at 6.00 on a Saturday... Do yourself a favour and avoid going!!
Fantastic food, great decor, very pleasant and welcoming staff. Will definitely be recommending this pub to my friends
Setting is lovely and good for a family but the food was poor with long wait times.
Prebooked table for 6 at 7.30pm on Bank Holiday Mon. Almost half the menu was unavailable! As a group of 3 vegans and 3 fish/veg eaters, choice was reduced to fish (or vegan fish substitute) and chips. We'd chosen Red Lion because it usually offers good selection for these dietary requirements; but not on this day. Then we learn there's no peas to accompany the dish and have to choose a side dish instead. Then there's no loo roll in any toilet. Manageress did all she could to help but no compensation offered. Only saving grace was the food was good.
Really accommodating to vegans, incredibly polite and friendly staff that went out of their way (reminded us to check if the alcohol free beer we ordered was vegan and returned a pair of sunglasses we left behind)
Decided to go here on hot Sunday afternoon instead of pub in centre of Cambridge hoping for better food remembering excellent mid-week meal a couple of months back. Disappointed to find they were offering a 'Sunday' menu instead of full mid-week A La Carte so starters were good but choice of mains reduced to make room for the 'roasts' leaving out the more interesting ones.
Great food, lovely service in a great setting on a boiling hot day. A very nice way to spend an afternoon.
The Red Lion was delightful and food was superb. Ambience wonderful. The only query was how the food and drinks orders were taken at the beginning. Once seated the it was a fantastic dinner. We will be back of sure.
A very pleasant escape from the bustle of Cambridge, located in a pretty village on the banks of the river. Particularly lovely range of desserts. We had been a bit put off by negative reviews re delays in receiving food after order time, but maybe eating earlier helped? Polite staff who seemed genuinely concerned we were enjoying our food. But it was busy and therefore quite noisy in the dining area.
The food here is lovely but the service needs to be improved. More staff needed as there's not enough of them and it takes ages to be served anything. I found it very pricey for a pub £45.00 a head for Sunday roast with dessert and 1 drink. Overall nice experience but who can afford to do this very often with a family ?
First visit, food was very good but service was poor, main meals arrived with the starter! It’s great to see a relaxed dinning experience but our waiter was horizontal, had to ask for wine menu, after ordering wine just walked off even though we were trying to order a soft drink, check back done when meals were nearly finished. Will be back as food saved the visit.
The pub has a lovely ambience, comfortable interior and a lovely family garden area. We were there for lunch, the food was nice but nothing outstanding and all reasonably priced.
Great service and food but portion size too small for the money.
Good quality experience. We often bring guests because food and service reliable.
The Red Lion is a nice place to go. It's near to the Grantchester Meadows and there is usually somewhere to park. Unfortunately the food is at best mediocre. The menu is a hotch potch of different foods from around the world; some simpler and fresher dishes would probably be better. Great for drinks.
Lovely meal. Good service. Were very helpful with my nephew and his allergies. Would recommend 😊
Waited over an hour for food, which was nothing special. I make better roast potatoes at home. Outdoor garden is better place to sit on a nice day and play area is huge plus for kids and parents. Indoors is fine but reeks of middle class faux pub charm
Great place- good food, good service, upscale but relaxed ambiance and best of all, dog friendly.
Booked a table in the restaurant for our anniversary. Ended up sat at a tiny round table right by the door. The table was dirty and sticky. My husband ended up sitting in a very low arm chair that he couldn’t get up to the table and found it really uncomfortable whilst trying to eat a Sunday roast. We had to get the water glasses changed because they were dirty. The replacements weren’t much better. Had roast beef but got very little meat, I had ordered two additional sides , glad I had or the dinner would have been plain and the main courses weren’t hot. We had one course and one drink and left. Really disappointed, ruined our anniversary really.
we have been to the red lion on many occasions now but unfortunately the last couple of time we have received poor service with the same rude waiter this time he spent 20 mins talking to other staff and customers about his poker holiday after asking him to find out what Gins they served so we could order some drinks so off the the bar we went to get our own drinks bar staff ( joseph was really lovey very friendly and very helpful) back at the table our mains mains arrived after the most beautiful starters unfortunately the steak can blue not the medrare thats was ordered and the duck dish came cold both sent back and returned almost right duck still a little cold but besides that the flavors and duck cooked beautifully no desserts orderes as the waiter still didn't come back to our table and had to ask someone else for our bill after the poor services we begrudgingly paid the tip that was automatically added to our bill hoping the next time we return things will be a lot better and back fo how it has been everytime be have been before
We come back here again and again, simply because we are never disappointed. Great food, a good range of dishes, always friendly service - welcoming and really make you feel comfortable without fussing. Good value and a lovely atmosphere, with the different areas of more or less casual dining adding to the understated, warm, friendly environment. Top marks.
Really lovely to find a restaurant that is truly family friendly with very good food.
Sometimes restaurants that say they are ‘family friendly’ but are actually just ‘family tolerant’ but this was not the case with the Red Lion. The staff were all very considerate of and engaged with my three children, even to the extent of making sure we didn’t have a table next to a couple with two large dogs when I said my daughter was anxious around them. To top it all, the adults in the group got to eat delicious food as well!
Ran out of the wine we wanted. Long interval between starter and main. Incorrect main meal delivered to both of us, duck was very dry. Very very poor, disappointing birthday dinner for my partner.
Fantastic, courteous, helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Our waitress was amazing. The food was fantastic. The place itself is lovely. We will definitely be back
Went with two old school friends for a catch-up lunch. Had a great time. Service was great despite our many requests for info on the menu. Friendly attitude and discreet food service.
Poor service let’s down top notch food. We booked ahead with Opentable and arrived on time. But stood waiting at the hostess station for over 10 mins, when we eventually got shown a table our waitress took another 10 minutes to bring over the menus. We were utterly confused as the restaurant was empty with only two other tables and what appeared to be at least three waiters and one bar keeper along with the hostess. The lackadaisical attitude prevailed throughout the meal. However the kitchen saved the day with excellent food and drink. So a real mixed bag. If you are not phased by poor service then it is still worth a visit for the food is excellent!
A great place for a meal but roast lacked some veggies and was a bit loaded with beetroot and cabbage not other veg. Lovely service and ambiance
Food was good but pricey. Waiter was inflexible to a simple request regarding a starter and seemed quite disinterested in our party once we had ordered our main. As such, we decided to have further drinks elsewhere and didn’t order dessert as it wasn’t offered. In essence, I’d describe the pub as a pricey place to have a big standard evening out. There are better and more welcoming pubs in Grantchester.
Very busy as lovely sunny evening.
Staff and kitchen struggled with the volume and our order came out in the wrong order despite asking for it all to arrive together...
Serving staff seemed unhelpful/avoided eye contact where possible.
We were served Prosecco which was flat but staff very apologetic and new drinks provided.
Lovely atmosphere outside in the garden.
A lovely roast pork dinner no complaints about the food but it could have been a little bit hotter. It was only warm and went cold quite quickly. Quite a long wait from sitting to getting our drinks. Food came quickly and a nice atmosphere. Lovely to sit by the doors but a lot of pesky flies around the food table. Always one of our favourite places to come.
