Red Lion - Grantchester
Set in the beautiful village of Granchester, our picture perfect, thatch roofed pub is a 2 minute walk from The Granchester Meadows and a lovely 20 minute stroll along The Cam from Cambridge.
Great venue, beautiful pub with lovely decor and a nice location. Good if you want a stroll along the river before your huge Sunday lunch. Great, imaginative options for food including vegetarians (only tiny gripe was no Veggie gravy for my roast, just didn't quite work with peppercorn sauce!). Good selection of drinks Inc non alcoholic. Great service, all in all a great place to go
Lovely leisurely Sunday lunch. Friendly staff and the food was vet good. Would definitely recommend here
Wouldn’t recommend this place
This was the 3rd time I had eaten at The Red Lion and the menu and service have improved greatly. The choices and the food were very good and the service also. We had the pork belly bites to share along with giant olives, all of which were very tasty and the olives had improved hugely. I had the Braised Mount Grace beef which was delicious as were the carrots, celeriac mash and gravy. I was too full for a dessert but would have chosen the Crème Brulee if I'd had room! I had coffee and sweet treats instead. The only reason I did not give 5 stars was because the g&t I had was over £7!! Perhaps I am a bit behind the times but that seemed somewhat expensive and unexpected.
Fabulous food and lovely service. Would definitely recommend and we will return.
My family and I have been going to the Red Lion for years. It has a play area for the kids and plenty of dining space. Only draw back is the menu choices for people with allergies or food intolerances, choices are virtually non existent and quite behind other local establishments menu options.
It was ok..shame as went for a romantic meal out for our anniversary as we held our wedding party at The Red Lion a few years ago.
The food I ordered wasn't what I was presented with, when spoke to the very lovely waiter I was later brought the missing ingredient in a bowl..ok but not great, considering its a very expensive menu I expected better.
Not a great deal of character anymore to The Red Lion. Shame.
Despite there being very few other diners as it was early, the service was slow (they forgot to bring the menus and took a long time with the drinks), two of the dishes were unavailable and the market seafood dish sounded like it had been cobbled together from mismatched leftovers. The flat iron chicken (which we all ended up ordering) was disappointing to say the least and the promised 'rosemary' fries were just basic fries without a hint of a herb! The chicken came on a plate with a small watercress garnish and nothing more - it was extremely disappointing.
We ordered our Sunday roasts and they all arrived at the same time. I couldn't believe the size of the Yorkshire puds. Enormous! Tasty food, great service, great price. Thanks!
We decided to try here for the second time. First time the service was not great and the food wasn't hot enough. The Sunday roasts looked lovely but again a bit on the cool side - maybe really hot plates would help? We were offered the dessert menu and opted for 2 x desserts and 2 x coffee and sweet treats. The coffees arrived (although we went in hunt for some sugar!) Then nothing! 10 minutes later the waitress apologized for the wait and offered us further coffees. We declined and said that we no longer wanted the sweet treats as the coffee had long gone. 10 minutes later and still no desserts so we cancelled, paid up and left. It's a shame as this place could be really good. Hopefully this will prompt improvements for future diners, but I doubt we will waste money on a third visit.
I love this place. The food is excellent. We had a Roast yesterday and it was superb. Service very attentive but no too in your face.
Amazing food ! Especially the shoulder of lamb with barley and bacon.
Only 4 stars due to long wait for food
Didn’t like the head bar man he was rude ! Waited five minutes to be spoken to !!
The online booking was lost . Despite email confirmation .
Steak no longer on the menu .
Roast lamb was two end pieces one the size of a cotton reel the other smaller .
Complained to no avail .
After 20 years of attendances I will vote for the new chef with my feet .
Visiting the area and dropped in for a Sunday Roast - one of us had pork the other lamb - both excellent - sides also great... enjoyed it so much we figured we better order dessert - and we weren’t disappointed! Friendly staff, nice interior and great food - loved it!
Excellent food, helpful friendly staff, all set in a lovely building in a beautiful Cambridge village. A really enjoyable lunch.
Our favourite pub in Cambridgeshire. Amazing atmosphere, even more amazing food in a stunning village. We had the vegetarian wellington roast dinner - it was incredible! Can’t wait for Sunday to come around again!
Over familiar student waiter was annoying and first courses took an hour to arrive
Two lady’s working as reception they are very unhelpful
Mains came very quickly, but there was a very pitiful amount of veg which came with the toast dinner. Also ran out of parsnips. Deserts were very slow, my creme brûlée was not set and my husbands sticky toffee pudding had a stone in it!
Always a great experience! Good food wonderful ambiance and great staff
Great venue.... lovely food. But as the sun came out everyone turned up at once. As it was super busy sadly the staff were overwhelmed and there were a few delays.
We sat outside as it was a nice day. Really poor service. Kids burgers came with cheese despite asking twice when ordering for plain burgers. The plate of crunchy raw veg and dip for kids was a plate with a spoonful of Philadelphia cheese and a few badly sliced vegetables. Not good value for money.
Slightly slow service considering the place wasn't that busy. Desserts seemed expensive; £6.50 for a slice of chocolate brownie and a scoop of ice-cream was a bit steep.
Stick to the mains for good value.
Eight ladies visited for lunch A bit of a disappointment All very average Some dishes were just warm
The most expensive dish (plaice ) was tasteless The manageress had a very brusque manner verging on being rude One duck salad had an overdose of chillies and was inedible The best bit were the sweet potato fries which were delicious Will not be in a hurry to go back
I probably will return here as it’s well located and convenient enough, but the food is such a poor standard. The Sunday roasts are average and bland tasting, double burger dry and bland. Chocolate brownie was too cold and hard; should be served warm. The service was good but the place is let down by what I suspect as a young inexperienced team.
Great service and lovely roast dinner on a Sunday.
Food was excellent! Service could be better but I think it was changeover time and they were a little busy. Pork roast dinner a reasonable price but lamb although delicious a bit pricey for the amount of meat I got.
The food here at the Red Lion was amazing, and very good value for money
The food came out quickly considering how pushy the pub was
The staff were very helpful and cheerful
A good experience all round
Table of 6 for Sunday roast. Although the Red Lion was a lively place we found the service was very slow. Food was tasty but was not very hot we did return a meal to be reheated. We have been before and all was fine so we will go again. Child friendly a good play area in garden. Also dog friendly.
The food was excellent, very generous portions and an a good variety of vegetables. The staff were very pleasant. Our only concern was that we waited nearly an hour for our food.
This was our first visit to the Red Lion and we had a table booked for 4 people. On arrival we were not greeted, no one approached us and we had to locate our table and our friends ourselves. There were waiters and bar staff visible to us but no one approached to ask if we needed assistance or if we had a table booked.
We found out friends and the only saving grace was our waitress, she was a breathe of fresh air and made our night.
We will not be going again, based on this visit.
We went here for a birthday meal but the management have changed!! £27.00 for a rib eye steak that they sent out purple and cold with frozen ready made chips!! They also had 4 of only 12 or so main courses unavailable on the menu despite us being there at 6.00 on a Saturday... Do yourself a favour and avoid going!!
Fantastic food, great decor, very pleasant and welcoming staff. Will definitely be recommending this pub to my friends
Setting is lovely and good for a family but the food was poor with long wait times.
Prebooked table for 6 at 7.30pm on Bank Holiday Mon. Almost half the menu was unavailable! As a group of 3 vegans and 3 fish/veg eaters, choice was reduced to fish (or vegan fish substitute) and chips. We'd chosen Red Lion because it usually offers good selection for these dietary requirements; but not on this day. Then we learn there's no peas to accompany the dish and have to choose a side dish instead. Then there's no loo roll in any toilet. Manageress did all she could to help but no compensation offered. Only saving grace was the food was good.
Really accommodating to vegans, incredibly polite and friendly staff that went out of their way (reminded us to check if the alcohol free beer we ordered was vegan and returned a pair of sunglasses we left behind)
Decided to go here on hot Sunday afternoon instead of pub in centre of Cambridge hoping for better food remembering excellent mid-week meal a couple of months back. Disappointed to find they were offering a 'Sunday' menu instead of full mid-week A La Carte so starters were good but choice of mains reduced to make room for the 'roasts' leaving out the more interesting ones.
Great food, lovely service in a great setting on a boiling hot day. A very nice way to spend an afternoon.
The Red Lion was delightful and food was superb. Ambience wonderful. The only query was how the food and drinks orders were taken at the beginning. Once seated the it was a fantastic dinner. We will be back of sure.
