Soul food
Acclaimed New York chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson brings his renowned Harlem restaurant to Shoreditch.

Red Rooster Shoreditch celebrates the roots of American cuisine, channeling Southern soul food alongside the diverse culinary traditions of New York and Marcus's Northern European upbringing. Staying true to its Harlem roots, the London Red Rooster outpost features many of the same dishes as the original - fried yard bird, devilled eggs, cornbread with honey butter - along with some new ones, created especially for London.

The gospel band on a Sunday are nothing short of amazing. They play popular hits in the gospel style and loads of people were up dancing! However the food and particularly the service was a bit of a let down. We had 2 orders that were incorrect and both times we were made to feel like it was our fault (or the loud music was!!!). For this reason I would not return. However the band is worth seeing that I would recommend asking for a table further away so the noise is less and have low expectations for the service.

We had a great time at the Red Rooster. The lady who greeted us (she had dark hair, I didn't get her name) went out of her way to get us a table near to the choir. It was excellent. Thank you everybody for a very memorable birthday brunch. we will be back and will highly recommend the Red Rooster to our friends.

A fun and lively venue for a Sunday brunch. The house choir choir we’re we’re very engaging. Food was good although if you’re vegetarian you are very limited with options that satisfy a main meal. The background music was pretty loud even whilst the choir were not performing. We were sat right in front of the choir so obviously very loud and a couple of the kids in our party found it uncomfortable so would recommend if you are going with young kids, to take ear protectors for them. Or would be amazing if the venue had a couple of spare head sets for those customers who visit are unaware of the sound level.
We had the table booked for a morning slot so had to leave our table to accommodate for the afternoon booking. We were however offered seats in the bar upstairs.
The service attentive and accommodating, although disappointed that we were overcharged on card payment by £30 of which it appeared that the member of staff who took our card payments was aware of when one of our party approached her about it after. That put a slight negative feeling on the visit as otherwise the service up until then had been pretty good.

Really great atmosphere with welcoming and attentive staff, the waiting staff in particular really made our evening. The food was tasty and served in a fun way (fireworks etc) which added to the whole experience too. Would certainly look to go for a special occasion in the future and would be great for a big group of friends.

Hands down the best brunch I've ever had or will have.

If only you could start every day with a Gospel Choir singing to you!!

The singers were obviously incredible with the most amazing energy but the food didn't disappoint either - highly recommend the shrimp n' grits. Also, do a lovely bloody mary!

Nice setting. The food is overpriced and over fussy - weird coconut, apple and sprout accompanied our otherwise delicious fried chicken all be it blander than the Harlem version - it was just far too sweet and crossed into that weird dessert territory and the chicken was served on it so couldn’t escape the flavour of it. My friend ordered the burger and she got a mouthful of plastic and whilst we received apologies and the standard ‘we will take off the bill and give you a free glass of (house) wine’ - no attention was paid to the fact it completely ruined the meal for all of us as we had to sit there eating and sharing our plates with our friend who dare not order anything else incase she ended up with another mouthful of something undesirable. No compensation offered to us as the table despite it ruining the experience for us ALL so a pretty narrow minded approach to customer service. Overall a pretty poor performance and lacking the soul in SOUL food. Also the only non-alcoholic cocktails both contained tea which is really limited. But then what should we expect from what clearly is another Shoreditch sell out to a really decent American concept... We all really begrudged paying what local independents do 100 times better...

Expected more; flavours synthetic and food did not have any of the zingy freshness I expected. Not spicy either; hard to know what sort of fusion it was really. Service charming although we did not receive our change. A tip ( on top of the already extensive service charge) is optional right??
Ambience is, ofcourse , too cool for school - or for its own good anyway.

Our waiter Crystal was unbelievably good, she looked after my partner and myself incredibly well! The food looked and tasted amazing (there was almost too much of it for us [my gf doesn't have the biggest appetite]), only slight comment was that because the quality of food was set so high from the get go, we found the second meet dish and the fish dish to be too salty for us. The live music was amazing and got everyone dancing in their seats. I had to move around the table to sit next to my partner as i wanted to watch the music (I was originally sitting with my back to the band) , this wasn't a problem for us as we had finished our food and were just onto drinks by this point. Overall great night, would highly recommend!

Service was very slow. The waiting staff were nice and friendly, but service was very slow. The burgers were great, as was the cornbread, but the other food was not well received. Overall, we liked red Rooster but it can be a fabulous place and hopefully will be in the future.

I found the Red Rooster as good this time for ambience as I did on my previous 2 visits. The bar tender was very enthusiastic as was our waiter. The food was good at least the starter was, chicken, but the main course the Obama short ribs was impressive (for 2), but very fatty and after a couple of mouthfuls of fat I stopped eating it. The entrainment was excellent. I would return and maybe stick to a chicken dish.

Unlike most places in Shoreditch these days, the staff were welcoming and unpretentious and the service was top notch.

Good value for money and interesting variety of food and music rather than just the generic fare you oten get.

Good diversity of staff and clientelle which is more representative of the general London population.

Will definitely go back and have sold it to my friends and colleagues as I work close by.

The gospel choir was very fun and the staff were all super friendly. That said, we were pretty disappointed by the food. We ordered the "Bird Royale Feast" as it was our anniversary and we wanted to treat ourselves. The portions were huge, but the chicken was very dry and not very well seasoned, the cabbage was really sour but otherwise pretty plain, and the waffles weren't what we expected as they were really light and crisp (not doughy as we imagined). Our favourite part of the meal was the cornbread starter and the grits side we ordered separately, which were both very tasty albeit rather pricey for the portion size. All in all, the staff and the choir would make me recommend the Gospel Brunch but I personally would opt for a cheaper meal as we spent over £70 for 2 people (no drinks included) and left pretty disappointed by the food.

So first important to note that we made NYE dinner reservations here bc we wanted to eat in the hotel (The Curtain) before heading out to party. We were a mixture of a Brit and 2 New Yorkers. We love Red Rooster in Harlem but weren’t expecting it to be exactly the same, was more a reservation of convenience. We chose the later “seating” (which for some unexplained reason was more expensive). The restaurant area was divided into seating near a stage where there was to be live music at some point and back tables at which 2 other small parties were seated. The “back” dining area was virtually empty. We were asked to make a 50 GBP deposit for our table a few days prior which was to be attributed to our bill. We were seated in the empty area and then met our waitress who though quite nice seemed completely clueless- telling us initially that all alcohol was upcharged (in fact it was only champagne- real nice touch on NYE to upcharge your champagne) service was mind bendingly slow despite their only being 3 small parties dining- had to ask for virtually everything repeatedly, including water. Wait time for ordering anything including drinks averaged about 20 minutes each. Was incredibly painful. Hostess was lovely and tried to remedy a situation where waitstaff gave us incorrect info about the cost of all alcohol (saying everything was upcharged). Another waitress did come back and apologize about that which made us feel a little better but overall for a pre fixe expensive meal during which there was no live music (despite paying the higher price for 930 seating) I was shocked by the level of service/lack thereof. And the food was really not that great... definitely will not be coming back to this Red Rooster.

Update** management reached out to me and were very thorough and kind in their apology and explanation for some of the issues we ran into- I am impressed with their followup and will give Red Rooster Shoreditch another chance upon our return to London.

This was my second time at the restaurant and was shocked at the difference in the experience. I had specifically booked this as I was travelling though London and had an amazing experience the year before. Upon entering I went to the hostess and said I had a reservation to which she looked surprised and seemed almost upset. We were shown a table and given menus. Almost 10 minutes went by before anyone even offered us a water let alone a drink. We then ordered drinks and luckily my wife said to hold off on ordering mains so we just ordered appetizers. The drinks then showed up almost 10 minutes later (I understand if the place was busy but it was almost empty). The appetizers then showed up at the same time giving us no opportunity to just sit back and enjoy the drinks. We ate and as one of the party was not a drinker he had the water. I guess its because he ordered tap and not expensive bottle but we had to search out someone to get us water again. I think it was the manager who we flagged down. We then ordered mains which came out quickly also. We paid and left. The food was at best a 6 that night and the service a 2 or 3 (my last experience was a 10 in both cases). I am known as bit of a foodie and can say of the 3 dining experiences in London this was by far the worst and in fact one of the worst for me in 2019. Don't know how a famous Chef owner doesn't step in here an shake some feathers.

The food was wonderful but the service was lacking. It’s possible my expectations are higher when dining at a restaurant of a celebrity chef, but the staff never checked back in with us after delivering our food, I never had an opportunity to order a second drink (which I would have liked) and we weren’t given an opportunity to order dessert, which we wanted but decided against after being ignored by three different staff - even though the people next to us got their plates cleared and ordered drinks and desserts while we sat and watched. We just asked for the check in frustration and then were given the wrong check - which took far too long to rectify. It’s a shame because the food was wonderful, but I would only recommend this place with the caveat that the service is barely two stars.
