Lovely setting for a romantic meal. Staff were helpful and efficient
The venue is lovely and the staff are really welcoming and efficient - but, perhaps the service is a little too efficient!... Within 10mins of ordering our starters arrived, & within 5 mins of finishing our starters, our mains arrived. My main was warm, not hot, and the fish was really dry. We were in and out of the restaurant within one hour. I think, given the prices, we expected a bit more.
Been there a few times and always good. Good varied menu.
Food was brilliant, couldn't fault the service or willingness to help. Will definitely be returning. Well worth a visit
Excellent three course meal. Food beautifully cooked and server attentive without being intrusive. Look forward to our next visit.
Small restaurant set on several floors. You can't avoid the stairs. Food was good and service fast and friendly. Discussion of dissections the servers had recently performed at university seemed a little inappropriate during a dining experience. Prices seemed a little steep for the quality provided. Would certainly visit again. 👍
Great service, interesting menu, well sourced food and excellent cooking and presentation. Well done!
We didn't have a starter though the selection looked good. The main courses were both full of contrasting flavours - I had the lamb and my wife the stuffed chicken with asparagus and green beans.
We both had the sponge dessert with winter berries which was delicious too. There were only 3 couples in the restaurant that night - such a shame as it affected the ambience.
This is a fairly small restaurant - 7 covers in our room but I understand there was another room (not open that night). Being small, we sat fairly close to our dining neighbors. As a result, privacy was an issue - for them and for us. But, given it was just a few days before Christmas, one expects high spirits and cross-over between tables. There were three issues with our order: a) a starter of scallops was under-cooked (not raw but needing extra seconds in the pan), plus there was a dollop of pesto that had no reason to be on the plate; b) a main of lamb rump was presented crudely... solid lumps of meat rather than sliced, and less tender than I'd have preferred, however, tasty; and c) a herb garnish, possibly coriander or flat parsley but definitely stringy, appeared on all 4 plates... just not necessary and 'in the way'. Service was friendly and efficient. The location of the restaurant is excellent. This could be one of the best restaurants int he centre of Durham but didn't present its best to us at our sitting. Maybe more feedback would help.
Cramped table - separated from the next one by about 2 inches and a bead curtain.
OK starters, oversauced main course fish with flabby skin - a little attention to detail could have made this good. Calves liver slices too thick, meat tough and full of gristle. Should have sent it back.
Lovely restaurant great food very impressed
Will definitely return
Good food but expensive. The drinks are more expensive than a five star hotel £16.50 for 2 G&Ts. service ok but not great. Restaurant very cramped. Wont recommend or visit again
Very unwelcoming! Not even a hello when we came in. Food was well cooked but nothing on the menu was anything we don't cook ourselves. Felt over priced compared to other restaurants in Durham. Over charged at the end, when I pointed this out, no apology given, just an oh. We were the only guests as well so not as if they were rushed off their feet.
We celebrated US thanksgiving in Durham at restaurant 17. Wonderful experience!
we have eaten here 3 times so far. The food is delicious and the staff are always friendly and polite. Lovely surroundings in the heart of Durham.
Great little restaurant, very helpful staff and great food.
Very pleasant environment on a wet night during the lumiere. Food delicious service excellent despite being busy. We enjoyed the whole experience.
Absolutely outstanding meal on Tuesday night. Classy quiet setting, great service and the quality of the meal exceptional. Thank you very much for a lovely evening.
We loved the intimate feel of the small dining room and the halloumi starter was amazing. Friendly staff and quick service.
Shame it was so quiet on a Wednesday evening as I felt it deserved more. Slightly chilly so the food cooled fairly quickly. Wine list rather small but good prices. Overall good variety of food and well cooked. Presentation could have been better and the sea bass definitely needed slightly more potato cubes for a better balance. Would definitely visit again at a weekend.
We enjoyed the starters. I ordered the duck breast and my husband , the chicken. I could hardly cut the duck, exchanged for my husbands chicken. He had to send back the duck, it was so tough. He then ordered the lamb shanks ( somewhat dry)
That being said, the waitress was extremely polite.
Sadly our wait to order, food and between courses we felt was too long. The food was delicious.
service was poor with no communication. all seemed a bit amateur.ordered what thought would be a nice bottle of red wine but instead we payed 20 odd quid for a popular £6 supermarket wine! menu didnt have a decent choice and and our starters were quite bland but not bad. steak was tasty but didnt have the sauce that accompanied it as it was disgusting but to be fair it was discounted from the bill .overall a poor dining experience so wont be back or recommending it either. pretty sure durham has better to offer than here
This is a hidden gem of a restaurant.
We dined there as 3 couples for dinner and the seating, decor, service & food were all top drawer
It is definitely worth a visit
From the moment we arrived the service was very friendly and relaxing, the dining area was small but expected due to the location and age of the building.
My wife and I both had 3 courses and she also had a large glass of wine and it was just over £100 total.
The only fault if I can call it a fault was that we didn’t receive steak knives for our Steaks or a dessert fork, but other than that it was a very positive experience and we would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Lovely decor and friendly staff. Only a small space, so felt relaxed and 'intimate'. Food was good and has a good wine list.
Restaurant 17 took my booking for 2pm on Saturday 7th of September but was closed when we arrived. Times on door AND website state restaurant is open from 12 until late on a Saturday.
It’s a shame as this was my favourite restaurant in Durham and I used to book all my work events here.
Pleasant atmosphere, very good food and excellent wine Service was friendly and efficient and I would definitely recommend Restaurant 17 for an intimate dinner or meal with friends
Small restaurant about 8 tables . Good menu about 6-8 choices on starters, mains and desserts . Had squid as starter was lovely . Lamb shank and fruity couscous . Husband had fish and vegetables and friend had gammon . Everybody thoroughly enjoyed meal. Servers were pleasant and attentive and checked to ensure we were happy with everything . Reservations recommended
Quirky and interesting dining room, friendly staff and well-conceived dishes made our meal a good one. On the occasion we are we were the only customers there which made it a slightly self-conscious experience. Would certainly recommend.
Amazing food! Totally kind and easy going staff. Very accommodating to us. We had a starter and main, but wished we'd gone on and had the dessert after we saw another diners brownie!
I had a lovely meal with my husband. The staff were very attentive and the food was tasty.
Good food in a relaxed, no pressure atmosphere. Will be back
We booked to celebrate my wife's birthday and from beginning to end the food and service was excellent. The only vaguely jarring note was the price of a bottle of wine ( as in most restaurants I guess ) and the fact the waiter was still asking if customers would like to try the wine even though the bottles were screw tops . I would definitely recommend restaurant 17 to anyone .
Had a wonderful meal out for 2 at Restaurant 17, everything was great. Would highly recommend!
Loved the laid back jazz and friendly service. Comfortable chairs and well spaced tables.
Food and wine is great too.
The service needs to be quicker. It seemed understaffed. I think if a bottle of wine is ordered, it should be poured by staff, even initially. The wine menu was very limited.
What a fabulous little find. Very simple menu not over complicated but tasted absolutely delicious. If you are going to do simple it has to be awesome as no room for error. I’m a real foodie & have eaten at some amazing restaurants but this is definitely up there. I would highly recommend 👍🏻
Great food with no pretense. The one drawback is the staircase down to the restaurant (for older members of our party) and another staircase down to the restrooms! The food was great - it was not presented in a very fancy way but everyone enjoyed their meal - all was delicious.
Lovely Graduation lunch
