Rioja are delighted to introduce our new restaurant concept, headed up by Catalonian Michelin-starred chef Miguel Angel Mayor. Our newly expanded 60-seat restaurant will keep it's focus on tapas dining, but it's sense of fun and mischief will remain. Chef Miguel will showcase a gastronomic vision that is-ever expanding and knows no borders. The menu will constantly evolve and Miguel and his team will use innovative techniques in respect of the produce sourced.

Disappointing visit yesterday. Service very disjointed in particular . Appreciate staffing difficulties at present however a lot of basics were missed. Empty plates and glasses not cleared from table for over 30 minutes. Glasses taken away and no further drinks order taken. Then received an acknowledgment we had been without drinks for some time however when we then asked to order last drinks we were told the waistress would check if that was ok ! Waitress returned and stated there was no time for us to have a final drink despite being without a drink for 40 minutes. Reason given was they had to clear the restaurant for next sitting. The upstairs was completely empty at this point apart from our table and one other. We were also still within our time limit … very strange and disappointing considering the amount of money we had just spent and disjointed service throughout. Food was fine however long gaps between dishes. I am aware tapas is served when ready however one of our party had completely finished before another received anything to eat. Unfortunately would not recommend anymore and we used to love this restaurant. So disappointed as we were hoping to celebrate a special occasion but felt like we were an inconvenience for most of the meal and particularly by the end. We tipped regardless as im so conscious of how tough the situation is in hospitality right now but I think a little more thoughtfulness with regards to service is not too much to ask.

This was our first visit after Rioja reopened and we’ll definitely be back. We had a fabulous meal and the service was welcoming, friendly and attentive. The price point makes it an occasion destination for us rather than a regular one.

This was our first visit since the re vamp and we were not disappointed. We liked it even more! The food and service were outstanding. The background music could have been a little more in the background and the food courses delivered a little slower to fully appreciate the culinary art that they are, but then again once they arrived they were devoured immediately!! We will definitely be back again.

Everything was wonderful but the ambience was ruined with the horrendously loud music fit for a clubbing scene. Which didn't seem to match the rest of the vide with soft lighting, cozy decor, friendly attentative staff and delicious creative food. I actually made ear plugs out of a napkin as I really wanted to have a nice time for my husbands bday.

We were out at the door which was chilly and the speaker above made our table very noisy. We asked to be moved which wasn’t a problem and had a lovely table up the back but there was still a draft coming from downstairs which didn’t make it as comfortable as it could have been. The food was fine but expensive for what it was, and not as warm as it could have been especially the beef shin and the croquettes. Serving them on a cold piece of wood didn’t help, a warm dish would have been better. The mussels would have been better in a sauce rather than 2 dips on the side that didn’t really go we thought. The staff were great, nothing was a problem. The wine was quite expensive, we had the white Rioja which was ok. All in it wasn’t a bad experience but I feel it was better the way it was as far as the menu goes. The interior was fresh and looked nice but I also like the more rustic look of before. I would tell anyone to try it and make your own mind up.

Our visit to Rioja was superb. The energy of the restaurant is more Ibiza than Argyle street. The provenance of the chef clear in the complexity and quality of the dishes. We could not fault any dish, from the classics of tomato bread and patatas bravas to the deconstructed "el Bulli" Spanish omelette. Could not fault the place and will definitely return!!

Squeezed into a table for 4 people when there were 5 of us so we had to suggest putting a chair at one end so we actually had room too eat! It got so tight for space during the meal that we ended up with our bottle of table water being taken away and the bottle of wine perched on a shelf behind as there were so many plates and dishes on the table at one time there was literally no room!
Another annoyance was the blaring loud, awful bass music so loud we couldn't hear anything our LOVELY servers were trying to tell us about the menu or indeed hear any chat at our table as you simply just couldn't have a conversation without shouting. We asked for music to be turned down, which it was for 5 minutes, but turned up again soon afterwards which made the evening exceptionally uncomfortable {deafened by loud music and squeezed elbow to elbow into a tiny table at this point we all just wanted to leave, but had heard such good reports about the food we thought we would literally 'stick it out'}
So ordered our food and wine and 3 sets of tapas dishes arrived before our wine - we had asked several times but kept getting reasons why it wasn't coming!
Many tapas dishes came fast a furious to the extent we had to pile up plates or push food onto half empty plates to create room. Why would any restaurant assume you wanted all these different dishes thrown at you in such a short space of time?
One positive was that the food WAS lovely and well presented, but none of us had time to savour /talk about each dish as they just kept coming with no break in between! What a shame as we didn't get to enjoy any of it. Quite frankly from trying to eat so fast and trying to keep up with clearing plates from the table to create room for next lot arriving we all had indigestion. Not the best way to entice anyone to return!
Why not authentic Spanish background music, white table clothes and table candles to help do your chef, the food and the lovely, staff the justice they all deserve !

The food was great, however, many of the dishes are better hot and so I would rather have ordered one at a time as they arrived at similar times and so by the time we had eaten one, the next one was already a bit cold.
