Taking its name from the famous Spanish wine, Rioja offers diners a chance to sample a mix of truly authentic classic Spanish dishes and tapas with a modern twist. All the dishes are expertly made by a team of Spanish chefs, using only the best quality ingredients sourced both locally and from Spain.
This stylish restaurant is situated in the hottest part of town, a short distance from Kelvingrove Park, Art Gallery and Museum, as well as the Hydro, SECC and Armadillo, which are all within walking distance.
When we arrived it turned out that the restaurant is closed for refurbishment. They should not be taking bookings.
Booked through open table for myself and 4 friends on friday 7th received the booking confirmation and also confirmed by text message on turning up at the allocated time we found the restaurant was under redevelopment and would not be opening soon ..evening ruined as we couldn’t find a replacement restaurant being so busy on a Friday night would not use open table again as the booking service cannot be trusted
While this was our second visit, it was our first lunch. Rioja has a good menu, but a little expensive. The only complaint I have is the strict 1 hour and 45 minute of table time. While polite, the waiter was clear that our time was up after this period. Our guest was a little shocked at this. The restaurant was not packed, although I appreciate bookings are what they are. Unfortunately we won’t be back as the ‘timer’ on the table booked means you’re rushing towards the end of the meal ...and the company. For the prices given they need to loosen up the time constraints so people can have a full enjoyable experience.
I had been recommended Rioja by some friends and was really looking forward to visiting. However, on arrival it became immediately clear that customer service was lacking. Due to an incident outside the management's control, a front window had been smashed. However, the business continued to operate and we were seated opposite the broken window. As the restaurant was empty we asked to be moved to the back where it was slightly warmer. While they agreed, the manager was not happy. We ordered cocktails which took 20 minutes to arrive (there was only 2 tables including our party of 4) and the white wine for dinner was plonked in a cooler with a chunk of ice which meant the bottle couldn't fit properly. They also forgot our coffee order. And they were also out of two of the main dishes. No reduction in bill and not even a smile from the manager. While management can be having a bad day, it should have been noted that we were one of the only customers that afternoon and should have been treated with a little bit more interest rather than being made to feel we were an irritation. I will not be going back, now would I recommend it to anyone.
Amazing food , cocktails and good service. Nice trendy setting
Great tapas and friendly service. It is a small restaurant which means tables are very close together so don’t expect a private conversation over dinner. With this small proviso would definitely recommend.
Great dinner, considering it was Christmas Eve. Staff were very good at recommending how many dishes we needed etc, certainly didn't oversell. And very competent at helping us with our wine choices.
We ordered 7 different plates, we didn’t like a few of them but that’s not the restaurants fault. The plates we did like were excellent. It’s a bit cramped but an overall nice atmosphere.
Food was lovely but slightly overpriced. Where it all fell down was the lighting - could t aee q bloody thing - red 10watt light bulbs on a dark winter night just made it ridiculous- especially up in the corner - we had to sit with phone torches on!!
Had a fantastic meal on Saturday, attentive staff and obvious new chef as it was excellent, be back very soon
Food was excellent; well presented; Good size portions.
Staff couldn’t be any nicer; always there to assist.
Have already recommended Rioja to friends.
This is my favourite restaurant in Glasgow! Food is great, never disappoints.
Food was lovely
I visit here often and the food is amazing; would highly recommend this restaurant.
The only thing that wasted my experience was an exceptionally rude young woman working behind the bar on Sat evening. She even continued to be rude when I commented on her attitude; no excuse for this behaviour whatsoever...shameful.
Busy Friday night and still received top quality service, super friendly server and meal arrived quick considering how busy the restaurant was. Will always return to Rjoja as they never dissapoint!
Yes but not for the food. It is a lively noisy Evie to enjoy good company.
The food lacked distinct flavours. Pre cooked and dished up canteen style.
Overall had the feeling it was just a “cash cow “ to the owner.
In out fast cram more customers in.
Lastly I was seated next to the exit to the basement with full constant view of one of the toilets.
Customer care? I think not.
3rd visit here and hasn’t let me down defo be returning
Superb food and ambiance, my only negative comment would be sitting at back of restaurant we struggled to read menu as lighting was very dim .
New favourite restuaraunt 🤩 we have been before. But forgot all about this wee place. Food is Fab!!!!!!!!!
Have been in several times and always enjoyed it. Food was lovely but service from manager/owner (older man) was terrible - table of 6 told had 1h 30 to eat when email said 1h 45. At 8.20 (7pm table) we were told we had eaten too late, after nobody had been eating for 10/15 mins) to have dessert and were refused it/another drink. Ruined a lovely meal.
Delicious food and great service I would recommend
Great food and service! Really nice cocktails too, lovely place for a dinner with friends or for a date
Lovely food and prompt, efficient service. Only thing was the lighting was so dim that it was a little hard to read the menus and see what you were eating! Really great tapas though.
The food was great and the restaurant is comfortable but the interior was too dark for particularly for reading the menu, I had to use the torch on my phone but also for eating it was not particularly comfortable. We didn’t realise until the bill came that there was a service charge, the total bill was a bit pricy for tapas and we object to the imposition of being obligated to pay for the service, if it is good enough we always tip and do so according to the quality of the service provided.
Someone let me know about Rioja on Friday afternoon. I booked it as I was heading to Hydro - was thoroughly impressed. Enjoyed the food - it was tapas so I wasn’t expecting fine dining - the staff were great, made is welcome and attentive without being in your face. Great vibe, great wine selection and good food. Well worth a visit and superb value!
Great food, great service and a really good atmosphere on a busy saturday night.
We came to celebrate my birthday which was great however the waiter let us order another bottle of wine then as soon as we poured a glass said we had 10’mins to leave the table. That really left a sour taste as had he told us we’d have gone else where for a drink. Considering our table of 8 had a fairly hefty bill that left a bit of a damper on what was until then a great night
Great place, although a dark and the tables are tightly spaced, worth a visit service and food super. I will Be back.
The food was great, so much choice and it came out really quickly as well. The size of table for our party was a bit small but the waiters were good at coming and clearing any empty plates when they were done
It was a shame there had been a mix up in the kitchen regarding our order. Meant we had to wait awhile. BUT .....BIG BUT..... the manager was amazing, he didn't charge us for our food AND when the food came it was, piping hot and made to order it was to die for. I can't wait to go back, the chicken skewers are beyond delicious.
Excellent service. Good vibe and great food. We'll be back.
This was my first time at Rioja and I thought it was amazing! The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. It is a bit pricey but worth it for a special occasion. I felt the restaurant was a bit too dark, but overall, a wonderful place to dine.
Rioja is a cosy restaurant. With brilliant cocktails and the most delicious tapas. A bit on the pricey side but it's well worth it.
My only complaint is that it could be bigger, as it's a bit cramped, which means I can't bring all of my friends at once!
Gorgeous place and such friendly, helpful staff. We had the cosy table at the window and the food was outstanding. We then moved to the bar to finish our drinks.
The staff couldn’t have been nicer.
Have been to Rioja a good few times now and it has never been anything less than great.
Food is always delicious and never too long a wait for It. All the staff are really attentive and friendly also.
Would definitely recommend to a friend and will definitely be back!
Very good selection of delicious tapas and wonderful wine. Highly recommended!
Nice restaurant with a good atmosphere but can’t seem to handle a full restaurant. Not enough staff to handle all tables. Order was got wrong, food was ok but priced very high. Drinks and cocktails were good.
Dined here pre-concert at the Hydro. Busy and buzzing! Greeted enthusiastically by the owner in a resplendent floral jacket. Reasonable wine list, we went for a 2011 Gran Reserva rioja which was lovely. Unfortunately most of the fish and prawn dishes were unavailable (sold out earlier that day) which was difficult to understand since we booked for 4.30pm (although it was a Sunday!). The food we had was excellent, just disappointing to have a reduced choice. The desserts were excellent too. I would recommend Rioja however, in an area where there are many other restaurant choices, and nice wee bars.
Best tapas in Glasgow! Really welcoming and high quality service. Would also be great for drinks later in the day
