Rioja are delighted to introduce our new restaurant concept, headed up by Catalonian Michelin-starred chef Miguel Angel Mayor. Our newly expanded 60-seat restaurant will keep it's focus on tapas dining, but it's sense of fun and mischief will remain. Chef Miguel will showcase a gastronomic vision that is-ever expanding and knows no borders. The menu will constantly evolve and Miguel and his team will use innovative techniques in respect of the produce sourced.
A fabulous meal and lovely staff! Thank you. It was quite cold sitting at the back but we should have worn warmer clothes!!
Amazing food, great service. The only slight criticism: they were out of sparkling water.
First time in Rioja. Food was fantastic. Really cool venue with great ambience and service. Will defo be back. Crispy chicken skin with octopus and pork belly croquettes were sublime.
First visit since Refurb- great food, lovely presentation, ambience and brilliant service!
Will be back (more often!)
Delicious and creative Tapas with something in the menu for all tastes.
Only critique is the music was a bit loud. Apart from that the whole dining experience was outstanding.
Food was amazing and very well presented but we felt the portions were very small which made it very expensive as we had to order more dishes.
Ok for a light lunch but not for dinner
Visited Rioja after a long absence . The decor is much improved - light and colourful and spacious compared with previously . Rioja had definitely moved up market and is now more of a gourmet experience and well worth it
Excellent food, the flavours were wonderful. Service and ambiance were outstanding. We had a wonderful time.
Really fabulous, innovative food and friendly service.
Revamp is great, very different to the original vibe Food and staff were great and the food tasted as good as it looked. Good advice on wine and recommendations on dishes hit the spot. Great place to go
Food was great and staff were friendly and helpful
Absolutely fantastic in all ways
Food amazing. Staff fantastic great music fab surroundings. Overall great atmosphere
Really nice atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and would definitely return. The only issue we had was the heat in the mezzanine which was extremely warm although a staff member tried to assist in putting the aircon on so would suggest downstairs unless you really enjoy the heat . All in all, we had a lovely night
Feels a bit like huge effort has been put into providing fine dinning presentation, but the taste did not quite match up. Muscles, while pleasant enough, were not warm enough. Prawns came with an interesting looking paper cloud on the side, some of the flavours on this were interesting, but some mouthfuls were bland. Other dishes were pleasant, but not hugely memorable.
Service was good, friendly and attentive.
Warm greeting on arrival, we were 5 mins early and table was just being reset then shown where we given the menu and asked for drinks. Great menu and the 7 dishes we ordered were delivered at a nice relaxed pace and beautifully presented and explained by the well informed team. Now we know why it’s so busy and hard to get a reservation. We will return very soon. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Excellent food and fantastic service. Can't wait to go back to try different things on the menu.
Had the most amazing food! Was all slightly
Food was delicious however the marbled steak was too chewy couldn’t eat it.
Music playing was poor.
Service terrific and the food was simply outstanding in every dish and they catered for a vegetarian and non vegetarian to share. Simply superb, thank you !
First time in Rioja since their makeover and we were not disappointed. The food is fantastic and the service was excellent. Really cannot reccomend here enough.
Place had changed since last visit, £30 for box standard Rioja! Menu not nearly as good as before and food not worth the cost. Disappointing.
Service was very slow and staff not very attentive. Food comes out when ready which is find but we had a wait of around 20 minutes between certain dishes. Food was fine but overpriced for what you get. Dessert were awful.
Food was awesome and inventive with superb flavours. Service excellent. Well worth a visit!
Such a disappointment. 4 of us dined here and not one of us enjoyed a single thing we ate. The vegetarian options were awful and all of the food was extremely salty and didn’t seem fresh. The only redeeming feature was our waiter who I couldn’t fault and the wine!
Outstanding. Loved Rioja before the changes but the are fantastic. The addition of Miguel is a fabulous find his cooking and ideas are second to none. Highly recommend, a truly wonderful culinary experience.
Unfortunately we didn’t rate the food on this occasion. With the exception of the deserts which were fantastic We found it bland and uninspiring.
A while ago I dined at Rioja and I was soo impressed. So much choice, tasty food and good portions!
Was completely underwhelmed this time. Wasn’t too impressed with the menu choices and the portions were soo small especially for the ££ price. On a brighter note, the staff were lovely and ambience was great!
Overpriced for what you get. Any cured meat seemed to just be the fat off it with no actual meat and the wood pigeon was mostly fat. Prawns were overcooked though the prawn cracker was good.
Watch out for allergens - dining partner had a reaction and the ingredients listed would not have triggered them to suspect it.
The croquetas de cocido were ok, the bomba de la barceloneta was nice. The patatas bravas were ok but having the way they were presented made it difficult to actually eat as the bravas sauce was on the bottom of the bowl, with potato wedges sat up in it (like a blooming onion) and then an aioli foam was squeezed on top.
If you don't care about price or flavour then go there. Otherwise choose any other restaurant near it.
Lunchtime visit was a lovely experience. Half-full on ground floor. Excellent food presented in BC an innovative and imaginative fashion.
Very good house red and great to see Estrella Galicia on draft.
Friendly, efficient service.
Food very good but maybe needs to be more simpler - service poor. Waiter not interested .
A fantastic visit, food was so good we will be regulars now
A gourmet take on tapas with excellent service and ambience.
Since Rioja has changed hands the interior design and ambiance inside is a lot better, staff were great and friendly.
Unfortunately the only downside for us was that whilst the food was very tasty, the portion size was pretty poor for the price. I know tapas is meant to be small plates but some of the dishes took the Michael..
Put more food on the plate!
Sorry, but I had high expectations, based on the back story of the chefs. I had been looking forward to this for several months , but it was massively disappointing. It went good dish, bad dish. I was utterly perplexed by the mussels (nice size and fresh) served with about 3tblspns of cold, tasteless 'liquor' on the side and some odd grated carrot mix. Not sure what the carrot was about or how this works as a shared plate? Meat bon bon reminded me of the delicious insides of a Cornish pasty. Oyster was amazing with lemon juice, but no cooking required there. Pork was tasty, although too much fat (50/50) to be pleasant, served on some iced lettuce leaves (necessary?) Staff friendly and efficient, but ironically too much. Sometimes barely left alone for half a minute before a different staff member asked if we needed drinks, to order food, how the food was or describe what the food is? Scuppered the romantic evening TBH and sometimes overly chatty when we were trying to simply eat. Sorry, I had wanted it to be SO different
It was amazing. My wife had been there before it was refurbed and she says although she enjoyed it then it nothing like it is now. Food great, staff great and honestly some of the best sangria I've ever drank
Disappointed some of the dishes had strange flavours which didn’t gel. Tomato bread had only a small pot of topping and was runny and flavourless.
Really average food really average service, staff struggled to give recommendations and I can see why- the food was not up to much.
The service was excellent but I was quite disappointed in the food. Some dishes were good but the mussels especially were tasteless and although they are calling the sauce an emulsion, it didn't add anything and was a very unpleasant texture. Not sure I'll be back to be honest.
The food was excellent, especially the chicken skin with the slow cooked octopus.
The staff were very attentive and helpful, overall a very good dining experience. I would recommend a visit.
