Riva in Helensburgh is one of the finest Italian and Mediterranean restaurants in town. On West Clyde Street, the Riva dining space is stylish and comfortable which, in a way, reflects the food: traditional, wholesome recipes prepared and presented in a contemporary way. From both the Riva lunch menu and the a la carte, expect pizza, pasta, meat and fish, with each dish featuring only the freshest produce that’s local where possible or imported from Italy. Riva is just around the corner from Helensburgh main train station, meaning it’s pretty easy to get to from wherever you’re based in this glorious part of Scotland. Reservations are essential.

We have been to Riva many times, however, this was by far the worst service ever. We were shown to our table and given some menus. After 15 mins we had to ask for someone to take our food and drinks order. Food and drinks were fine (although despite asking for some tap water and three glasses, I had to go up to the bar to ask for this as this was not brought to the table with the drinks). No one approached to ask if everything was alright during the meal or asked if we needed more drinks. We had to then ask if we could view the dessert and cocktails menu. When this was provided, we then had to approach them to take our order. The restaurant was not very busy with only a couple of tables occupied. It was however a sunny day and they have half a dozen or so tables outside for alcohol drinkers - they were getting all of the service! There was ample staff working that day - they just didn't see the three "invisible' people who were having a meal.

Two of the items on menu not available. Had to settle for the steak. Not the best tough and gistle. Pasta overcooked. Had to go to bar to order drink seemed like not enough staff.

Food was great, service was poor. Had to ask for cutlery whilst meal was getting cold. Also saturday night in restaurant and news was on wall behind my partner, I don't want to watch bombs falling in Gaza whilst trying to eat pasta.

Was assured before hand from waitress the restaurant was totally aware of celiac / gluten measures. Ordered mussels which were nice but came with no bread which was a first. Then had pepperoni pizza and penne carbonara. Pasta was nice, pizza was soft which is good for gf but never came with red onions or mozzarella as advertised. Wife had non gf king prawn tagliatele which she was disappointed with and did not finish. The pasta was overvooked and therefore stodgy and only 3 king prawns in it. Not worth £82 overall for the meal counting drinks. Literally as soon as we left my stomach swole up, had severe wind which lasted all night and mega pains. First time I have been glutened in about 6 months :( Wont be back anytime soon.
