This was our first and last time we will dine at Roast. The food was average but the main meal was almost cold and it wasn't a salad! The service was very poor with long waits between the three courses.

I have been to Roast before and enjoyed but sadly Sunday was very disappointing. The place is very popular and therefore very busy. We were seated 40 mins after our reservation time and so tried to order straight away. Some simple questions on the menu could not be answered by the waiter which seemed unusual for a restaurant of this calibre. We then had to wait a very long time for everything - over 15 mins at one point for a drink.
We were sat next to a table of 8 who were served more quickly than us. I was served my main course (the pork belly) and waited 7 mins until the waiter came over (unable to get anyone’s attention) at which point I was like where are the veggies and potatoes? The Sunday 3 course menu is £39 however all you get as part of the roast is the meat, gravy and potatoes (Yorkshire pudding) you have to order sides separately which to me is ludicrous for a Sunday lunch. The food we had was very tasty and it was literally the only saving grace. We cancelled the desert as by then I was done. It was my birthday and I had been looking forward to it so save it save it was not a good lunch!

The food was very good but we waited over 59 minutes for our table even though we had a reservation. When we were seated we waited a long time to be served and for the food to be brought out. They say for two guests you only get 1.5 hours at your table but we were at our table for more than two hours because of the slow service!

The don’t recall ever having to wait 25 minutes for a table to become available having made a booking. Indeed, I would expect that my booking would be cancelled and my credit card charged if I had arrived 25 minutes late. 3 courses and a glass of wine at £55 should necessitate flavours and ingredients that I couldn’t easily get hold of at my local wetherspoons. Overpriced, slow service, poorly organised, waiters dropping dishes on the floor and looking flustered, abs food that lacked flavour. A rant but I make no exaggeration. Would not recommend.

Food was lovely but unfortunately the restaurant was badly let down by poor service. We booked a table for 2.30 on a Sunday afternoon and were finally seated at 3.15 on a table right at the back next to the kitchen- and that was only after we’d been and asked twice if our table was ready. The aim of the service seemed to be to get food out of the kitchen as fast as possible- the waiters were not friendly and no one really seemed to be responsible for looking after us. We had to refill our own wine glasses and had to sit and look at our pudding (when it finally arrived) whilst the waiter disappeared to find some cutlery. He only brought back spoons so we to ask for forks. Tea and coffee took ages to come. When we were shown to our table we were told our 45 minute wait would be acknowledged when the bill came. It wasn’t, so we queried this and the service charge was removed. But as the service charge is supposedly a discretionary charge for good service I still felt this was a bit of a cheek. However I couldn’t face raising this as this was three and a half hours after entering the restaurant, and I just wanted to leave. A real shame as I’d booked the table in February for my husband’s birthday and had hoped for a special meal- sadly next time we spend that amount of money on a meal it won’t be at Roast.

Very nice food but the service was slow. We arrived at 2 15 ( on time ) and were told we had to be away by 5pm which was fine. We did have a large table ( 11 people ) but we were still on the main course at 5pm. We also ordered a cake for my birthday ( the host ) which didn't arrive and we had to leave by 5 45 as some guests had a train to catch.

Restaurant is busy in a good way, good atmosphere and lovely setting. Food was good although we had the Sunday set menu and feel there should be more choice of starter and dessert. Everything is a bit stodgy, could do with some lighter more interesting choices. The meat for the roast is amazing - massive portion, although it is a shame you have to buy the vegetables separately. I feel it should come with some greenery anyway. Also the veggie option was a risotto, think a nut roast would be better alternative. The waiter was attentive although think he was pretty new as did not know much about the menu and was a bit useless recommending wines. Probably wouldn’t visit again but was nice to go once.

The service was disappointing. We had to call a waiter 3 times to order our food, then we waited one hour to be served. Not even the kids food came earlier than that. The waiters and kitchen staff were arguing, it was a mess and we decided to just eat our mains and leave. Never going back.

Hi there

I booked this restaurant for my Manager's C-Level Exec dinner! He highly recommended and they had a lovely evening. Great food, ambiance and drink! So a very successful evening!

The only slightly negative comment, was in respect of when I called the Restaurant back on to confirm the booking (I was basically returning their call on Monday). I think I spoke to Emma (I think or someone with a familiar sounding name) and she was really odd and slightly rude on the phone! It was quite Bizarre - I was trying to change the booking name, but I'm not sure whether she couldn't hear me or didn't understand me! Put it this way, after repeating myself several times, we got there in the end but the call ended somewhat abruptly! I was quite miffed!! I've never experienced anything like that before (in nearly 20 years) and I'm constantly liaising with restaurants for business and personal occasions! They are always so happy and friendly???!!

Anyway, I'd like to book this restaurant for my Mother in Law's Birthday next month, so I'm putting this incident behind me! Perhaps it was just a one off (or a bad day at the office!) Perhaps appoint someone more personable to deal with phone inquiries and confirmations!!

Other than that , my Manager and his customers had a truly enjoyable evening!

Many thanks
Sam

I will never be going back to Roast again, the service was awful and they ran out of seasonal specialties. Don't pretend to be a market focussed restaurant & run out. Dreadful. And still charge a high service charge

We booked a table at Roast for early evening. There were some problems on the tube so we phoned ahead to say we were running a few mins late. No one picked up the phone despite phoning more than once. By the time we arrived (c10mins late) they had put us down as a no-show. After sorting that out (which they did somewhat begrudgingly) we were seated. We were then totally ignored by the waiting staff for about 20mins and in the end we left and went somewhere else.

I hadn’t been to Roast for a number of years. The last time I went it was still a reasonably classy establishment where one could go for a good meal and a nice ambience above Borough Market. Frankly it looked old / dated / a bit scruffy, there was a group of pretty drunken lads in there singing happy birthday to their friend repeatedly like we were in the pub and the whole thing seemed disorganised and like no one really cared. Not exactly an experience worth the relatively large sums of money they charge for their food.

A real shame. I won’t be going again.

Eaten here many times. Food was good although not enough gravy but the service was terrible. Ordered veg but had to track down a manager to get it and was almost done with my food before it came. Same with drinks. I only saw our waiter on the floor one other time during our entire meal. Shane as this is almost always 5 star for me but not this time.

A beautiful restaurant, and had high expectations for the Sunday Roast. Unfortunately the experience was dented throughout. Waited 20 minutes for the reserved table to become available. When querying, was told that a group had been at a table for 3.5 hours and there's nothing they could do (reservation confirmation clearly states time limit). Cocktails order forgotten, extremely noisy with tables placed too close to each other, roast potatoes completely dry. Roast beef itself was ok. Delicious sticky toffee pudding!
Would probably be a much better experience on a weekday.

Service was poor, felt like we were being rushed. Table was booked for 12.15 and we were told we had to vacate by 2pm. From 1.30 we got asked if we wanted coffee 3 Times in 10 mins and at 1.45 we were told we had to vacate at 2pm so did we want the bill. We said no as we were finishing our wine. Bill then landed on our table at 1.50. Felt like we were on a conveyer belt which ruined the experience.

A bright airy welcoming location with a good buzz. The food was good; the kippers had a very authentically home-cooked look to them and the Lobster Benedict was very interesting. The food going to other tables looked very good too. One dish and a drink didn't turn up but they didn't make it to the bill either so that wasn't too bothersome. Nonetheless, pretty pricy even for London - £70 for two people. Recommended for a date or if you feel like pushing the boat out a little on a day out.

I’ve dined at this Roast previously. But will not again

We were kept waiting for our table for over an hour. No explanation. We kept being told 1 minute, 5 minutes - on the multiple times I asked. Then I feel our service was very rushed, my side order was cold

We did not bother to stay for coffee or dessert - it was £153.28 that could have been much better spent elsewhere

Really disappointed. Service was sloppy, food was poor and the price was high. Staff didn’t know what dishes were ordered and kept delivering the wrong dishes. The side vegetables didn’t appear without us chasing over half way through the meal. The steak was Luke warm at best and a soggy blob. Really disappointed and won’t be back for a while.

We waited for our order for more than an hour. It was a simple dish, we ordered curry as it was recommended in the menu as the dish of the week. The people who sat after us, had desert and coffee before we received our order. We asked if the kitchen made a mistake. The waiter said there was no mistake. The curry was mediocre and overpriced for what it was. The ambiance does not justify the mediocre food and poor service.

We visit Roast a few times a year, mainly for birthday lunches and special occasions. This, in itself, explains that we are always happy to go back and enjoy good food and wine. One minor gripe - I always request a window table when booking through Open Table and this is normally not a problem. On this occasion, we were shown to a mid-room table and when I pointed out the several vacant window tables, we had to wait until the (presumably) head waiter had to seek approval from someone else. I'm unclear why, as we are always told that we (and presumably anyone else) cannot reserve specific tables, so I don't know what the problem is?

The food and service overall were great. The dining experience was let down a bit by the front of house who encouraged us to stand in the entrance way waiting for a table. We finally went through to the bar for a drink and placed our order, but waited a further 20 minutes and still no drink. When we went back to ask about our table we were told it would just be a few minutes, but we were seated fairly promptly. Our drinks were then delivered to the table.

Awful Sunday roast dinner experience tonight, tourist trap
1) had to wait 5 minutes at the front before someone even spoke to us to be seated for our reservation
2) for some reason they only do Sunday roast as a 3 course menu for £39. Or you can ask specially for just the main course for massively over priced £30
3) roast comes with a few potatoes and no vegetables, which come at an extra price
4) we ordered extra veg and it came a good 5 minutes after we finished the meal
5) they still tried to charge us for the veg on the bill
6) staff were rude. No apology for sitting us down late, one walked off mid conversation. They still charged 15% service

This place has low standards as it serves tourists, but as a local, I'll never go back

Waited for over half an hour after our booking time to get our table. The wait included a party who had arrived later than us, with the same number of diners, getting seated first after complaining. While waiting we were made to stand in the bar area and were only seated at our table after I pointed out others were receiving priority.
The meat of roast was good quality but there were 5 smallish roast potatoes between three of us which given the meal isn’t cheap is pretty poor. Also no veg is provided with the set menu so that is an additional cost (there was no price for additional potatoes which there needs to be)
Overall I was disappointed particularly as if booked it for one of our party’s birthday. definitely won’t be going back.

Excellent food. We ordered set 3 course Sunday lunch menu but a bit odd no vegetables were included except roast potatoes. We had to order vegetables extra but the choice was very limited and uninspiring. We had to ask 3 times for more water. We asked if one scotch egg starter could come hard boiled and this was agreed. When it came it wasn’t. The waitress said they were pre prepared and this was how it comes and walked away. We had to call her back to say the lady was obviously pregnant and could she choose something else then. She had to wait again while it was ordered again. The rest of the food was very tasty, plentiful and well presented. We liked our corner table next to the windows.

Had a much better meal at Roast a few years ago. The food was average this time round. We mentioned that it was cold in the restaurant & the waiter didn't really seem that bothered. He didn't even offer to go & try to make the temperature more pleasant. When we looked around we also saw other people with coats on so it couldn't have been just us feeling it.

Special lunch for four friends spoilt by the mistakes made during the ordering of the food and the watered down wine!
My friend was on a special diet so ordered the veggie burger and asked if she could have green beans instead of fries - she didn't want to be tempted! My other friend ordered the very expensive dish of the day - beef wellington , which was very good apparently but only came with roast pots ( £34 and no veg!!) so she ordered green beans also - when the food arrived we ended up with two green bean portions, one fries and no roasties! No big thing really except we didn't like to keep moaning and yet to get what we wanted we had to - twice!! and then the wine! We ordered the cheapest bottle of white on the menu not because we are cheapskates but because anything more than £27 for a bottle for three people over lunch seems excessive ( but we are country bumpkins!) - we enjoyed this wine but it wasn't left on our table to help ourselves and twice we had to ask to have our glasses refilled - the last time we sipped our wine and it was more like water! it had been mixed with water! Now our waiter was apologetic ( he laughed) and said it had taken water in whilst in the wine cooler - and to be fair he did open another bottle and give us all another glass - however - again we had to seek him out and make a fuss. we didn't want a meal where we had to keep making a fuss - we wanted a nice, straightforward, special meal in nice surroundings - and for a professional establishment these mistakes seemed too many.
This was a meal to celebrate a long standing friendship and it was meant to be special - but it wasn't - and that was such a shame as the food we had was very nice. I am afraid we would not go back.

So the staff recommended a side of potatoes even though the food came with potatoes. There wasn’t enough water at the table, and when we asked it never arrived. My mum’s liver was really overdone (but she doesn’t like to complain) and it was too noisy for my stepdad to hear anything. The woman on the door was grumpier than a hungry badger. So grumpy.
But.
The other food was great, starters and puddings lovely, the cocktails were a nice piece of theatre.
It was fine. But I expect more than fine for these prices. If it was a gastro pub i’d be generous but it’s not. Should do better.

I have been to Roast a number of times for breakfast and dinner and have always been impressed despite the prices it always seemed to be value for money. Not on this occasion though, the serving staff were brusque to say the least, the service was poor and slow and we didn't get everything that was ordered. The food was served on a cold plate , so the food was lukewarm at best. Disappointing, just wonder if there has been a change of management or direction but at these prices it needs to be better than it was on this occasion.

As always, food & service were excellent. Staff (and there are plenty of them) are very attentive. I rated noise as moderate - but though it was quite full, you were able to converse easily. The tables, however, are quite tightly packed in, so you wouldn't want to be discussing anything confidential as table next to you will be able to hear your conversation.
