Contemporary West African restaurant, Shakara, is the latest addition to London’s vibrant dining scene. Nestled in the heart of Marylebone, Shakara serves to provide a thoughtfully curated menu of exceptional African cuisine paired with fine mixology. Rooted in rich cultural traditions and designed to ignite all the senses, Shakara offers a sanctuary of sophisticated indulgence with exclusive private dining.

The space is adorned with the warm radiance of pendant lights, earthy-coloured terracotta tiles inspired by Nigeria’s red soil, and abstract artwork that showcases artists from esteemed institutions such as The Red Dot Gallery. From the brand’s logo reflecting a culturally-inspired ‘K’ and talking drum graphic elegantly stamped into wax, the launch of Shakara honours Yoruba cultural heritage while simultaneously incorporating a sense of timeless sophistication and exclusivity.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Shakara shines with "immaculate" food and a "calming" ambience that balances beautifully with its Afro fusion menu. Guests rave about "amazing" dishes like lobster pasta and suya. The vibrant atmosphere is enhanced by an excellent DJ, attentive staff, and strong cocktails. Despite a slight wait, it's a "10/10" experience.

I loved our meal. The service was great and the food was out of this world. We ordered a balance of delicately seasoned mains with bold sides. I had the Market Fish (Halibut fillet) and my partner had Monk Fish. Both cooked better than I've had elsewhere. I'm used to Monk Fish being quite tough but this was exquisitely cooked. The sides were Jollof rice and winter greens. We also had some starters. The portions are really good, not to big/ not too small. Cocktails were original and fun. The atmosphere is lively with a DJ, but you can hold a conversation. I love the joyful party atmosphere. The decor also really evokes the warmth and laid back glamour of West Africa that we don't always get to see.

Music was too loud, we were seated in a lounge table, it would’ve been impossible to eat comfortably, didn’t feel like a restaurant. We didn’t eat, just stayed 10 minutes max and left.

Had high hopes for Shakara but was unfortunately disappointed. While the food was flavourful the portions (especially the mains) were on the small side and you definitely have to order a number of sides which at £15 each are quite expensive. If Shakara wants to be compared to a fine dining establishment to justify charging such prices then it needs to fix the overall dining experience. The vibe (and loud music) is definitely more cocktail bar than restaurant and the service while friendly gave the impression of being overwhelmed with long waits for food and error prone ordering. There is clearly skill and talent in the kitchen but the management should really give some thought to the overall value proposition. I left with feeling of a restaurant with unrealised potential rather than one which had found its place in the competitive London restaurant world.

So bad it was comical. We couldn't stop laughing. We were sat next to the sound system which had no cover on it, so there were flashing lights in our face. Our chairs had wheels on them so we kept nearly falling off. They tried to give me an out of date beer and charge me £12 for it. The starters were tasty. The mains took an hour, so we told them to cancel the order and we left. Completely insane that this is meant to be a high end place.

Food was alright, the portions are ridiculous small for the price.3 yam chips for £10 it’s a bit excessive . The service needs improving. We had to wait 25 min for our table, some guests were seated separately. The service is very very slow. The dj needs to work on his playlist 🥴. Overall, 6/10.

The snacks were simply amazing. The main dishes were good but could have been punchier. The kelewele lacked flavour, unfortunately. The service seemed amateurish. The drinks were overpriced. The total bill was quite high considering the overall experience. Hopefully things will get better as they settle in, London needs a great West African restaurant.

Poor Communication & Disorganised Service Booked a table for a birthday weeks in advance but was never informed about a private event or a strict two-hour limit. Only after ordering were we told to vacate the table by 10pm just an hour after being seated. Our booking was at 9pm. We were moved to the lounge, expecting to continue our night, only to be handed the bill within minutes and told we couldn’t order more drinks and neededto leave due to a private event. Other guests were also prompted to leave arriving shortly after us. Disappointing Terrible communication, rushed service, and a ruined evening.

The food was amazing and the chef made sure I got to try a little bit of everything on the menu. The suya, sandos and lobster pasta were especially good! Overall, had a great time at Shakara.
