The place was closed for renovations. For whatever reason, Open Table accepted my reservation. Not saying that its Open Tables fault, however, there needs to be some coordination between Open Table and the restaurants
Shinsen is an amazing hidden gem located in the Bowery area. Forget your typical Joe Shangahi's next door and GO TO THIS SPOT! Amazing food, excellent quality and lovely ambiance. The owner Tony is a sweetheart who makes it a point to check on his guests, which you do not typically see anymore in NY restaurants. They have a trendy sake lounge hidden in the back that is a must check out. The spicy tuna rice was one of my favorite cakes was one of my favorite items. Will definitely be back!
The service was horrible some of our guest never got there food and we had to leave after 1 1/2 hours.
Although some of the food items we were served were adequate (the salad and soup are actually quite good, the California roll was atrociously salty and had an unusual texture), the service was extremely slow even though the restaurant was empty. A frustrating experience.
Food was perfection, the saki was lovely too.
A little expensive, but was good quality
Very poor service. The manager was not present so the waitress had to call to ask about our pulsd deal and some of things mentioned in the pulsd deal were not available. Service was very slow, it took almost 45 min to get our first drink. The place was also empty. Would not go back
The services were fine. The food wasn’t as good as I expected and they ran out of what I wanted and didn’t let me know until I had placed my order. Also the wait between the food was kind of long.
The food was good but not outstanding. The staff was very nice. They just didn't have sake bloody marys on the day I went for Saturday brunch.
Nice place but the menu was very confusing, and you can tell that they are trying too had to be cool. Food is good, average.
Decent sushi considering the price. But service was terrible. Sushi chef was very very slow. Much slower than elsewhere. And could not serve the food at a proper pace, even though the restaurant was half full. In order to get food to various tables they served one dish at a time to each table. Result was a 45-50 minute gap between when the first person at our table got their meal and when the last person got their meal. We each watched as one person ate! We were only 4 people and the place was half empty.
Had a good meal here. We had the sushi combo D which is around $100 which did well for four people.
All food was fresh.
Did have a big problem with $5 miso soup though. All other sushi places I've been to include it with large sushi platters.
Amazing experience! Maxx was honest and helped us pick out the best dishes, Chef Yama makes for a great time and incredible food!’
fresh sushi and friendly Sushi chef! highly recommend to give is a try
I randomly found this place and made a reservation for a group because I wanted a fun sushi dinner that was mid-level priced (so many good sushi places in NYC are astronomically priced and therefore not ideal for groups. Otherwise they are super cheap all you eat/all you can drink dumps). I am a sushi fanatic and have eaten at some of the best sushi restaurants in NYC & Shensin was absolutely DELICIOUS and such a phenomenal value for the quality of food. They offer all the traditional sushi as well as some really creative rolls/pieces that were incredible!
This is a great place to come with a group as its lively and they play fun music. It would be good for a big birthday dinner or whatnot as they also have big sushi platters to order for groups. You can even rent out the back room for a private party (it has its own bar back there). The staff was also really friendly!
I highly recommend coming here and will 100% go again!
Pro Tip: Definitely order the Tuna/Crab Tower AND their California roll puts every other California roll to shame.
The service was amazing. The chef doesn't seem as friendly..
Sushi was excellent.
I wanted to like this place
AMAZING !! Everything about it from the decor to the servers to the incredible food for really reasonable prices. I’m obsessed
Really well done. Wife and I sat at the counter with our two sons and everything was great. Kobe beef and uni roll was legit. Ahi tower was fantastic. Owner was super accommodating. This place had fantastic sushi and was completely unpretentious. Great spot.
Shinsen was phenomenal. The food (+++Salmon Osaka) was great. Sushi was super fresh.
Service was excellent. The owner brought out a complimentary appetizer and chatted with us. The entire staff was super friendly. Highly recommend!
I eat a lot of sushi and love to find a place that does something original AND delicious. This was it. Fresh, organic ingredients in complex and delicious pairings. really special!!!
Shinsen Bowery was above my expectations. While searching for a place for my girlfriends birthday, I stumbled upon a new sushi restaurant in the bowery. The reviews and the article I had read solidified my choice in dining. We traveled from New Jersey to Shinsen. The owner Tony, and all of the wait staff were phenomenal and I would highly recommend and return to this restaurant. The Ahi Tuna Tower Kobe were two of our favorite dishes. Thank you Shinsen for the memories, we will be back soon.
Shinsen is new to the neighborhood and you can tell it’s trying to do something different. The space is very open and thoughtfully designed.
There is a matcha bar in the front, and a long sushi bar where you are face to face with chef who is who’s every move is done with intention. We got the sashimi salad which was really fresh and flavorful. We got it with the red chili sauce that is homemade by the owner’s mother who was behind the bar cooking. There are four main Omakase options on the menu. We got the first one which is the least expensive and has a lot! I think that if they changed the style to give you one roll at a time, instead of all of the rolls at once, they could probably charge a lot more like other Omakase places. Everything had amazing flavors. They are getting their liquor license next week so jump on you last opportunity to BYOB to this amazing new spot.
The owner, Tony, came over and chatted with us throughout our meal. He was really friendly and excited about the possibilities of the new spot. After the meal, because of our experience, we were left with the feeling of “we must do everything we can to make sure this place is here for a long time.”
