Shun Lee West

Chinese
Conveniently located across from Lincoln Center and a startling revelation in shiny black lacquer, Shun Lee exudes Asian chic with grand authority.
For haute Chinese cuisine, it’s among New York City’s best. Regional offerings include crispy Grand Marnier prawns with honey walnuts (Canton), braised sea bass in hot bean sauce (Hunan) and shredded beef with leeks and hot peppers (Szechwan). Specialties include beggar’s chicken baked in lotus leaves and clay (requires one day’s notice), Hunan tripe, sweetbreads with black mushrooms and of course, Beijing Duck.

One of our tried-and-trues. I’ve been going to Shun Lee West almost since it opened 40 years ago, when it was at the vanguard of fine Chinese dining. It never really moved forward but it’s still a delicious homage to ‘80s-style Szechuan food. The service is impeccable and the period decor still rules. A real UWS treasure! Long live Shun Lee!

I can’t comment on the food but I can comment on the service because there was none and we didn’t stay because no one greeted us. The ambulance was very grim and it was dark in there and it was dirty. It was old and it needs to be updated

Usually Shun Lee has great service. Maybe they were understaffed

Soup dumpling were old and sad. Not a good start to a meal to say the least. The place is just tired, the food overpriced for basically delivery quality takeout.

So glad Shun Lee West opened back up. I was worried they’d close for good because of COVID. Their food is delicious and the service was excellent. Can’t wait to go back!

We have been to Shun Lee WEst at least 50 times over the best 30 years. The place was dirty when we walked in the carpets had not been vacuumed and looked dirty.

The food was mediocre not the high quality that we have had in the past.

The server was excellent we knew him from before and had him many times.

It pains me to say this after being a Shun Lee customer for a good fifty years, but the duck was not even close to the Peking Duck House. It was dry and tasteless. What a disappointment. The rest of the meal was very good. But the duck is the centerpiece of my meal.

Wonderful Chinese food, beautiful room and excellent service. I have been going to this restaurant for about 30 years, but only when I feel I have the extra money to spend. It's worth it, but it is expensive! (About $100 per person when all is said and done.) Also, there used to be more duck entrees on the menu. (One I remember and liked was duck with walnuts.) Last night I only saw one duck entree on the menu. Would love to see Shun Lee bring the others back. Maybe once they fully ramp up. I wish them luck and hope they can remain in business.

Shun Lee West never disappoints! We ordered vegetable spring rolls, steamed shrimp dumplings (divine!), scallion pancakes, bean sprouts with scallions and sautéed prawns with vegetables and a very spicy hot sauce. I am always impressed with the quality of their prawns. And the waiters even managed a happy birthday celebration with pineapple and lychee nuts, even though their dessert menu has not returned quite yet. A lovely evening and memorable meal!

Service attentive. Did not feel rushed to finish one course before next served. Quality of starters and main dishes as good as remembered. Without theatre crowd it was possible to have a conversation at table.

We had soup and appetizers. Everything was delicious. The grilled scallops were the best we’ve ever had here — we are long time customers of this restaurant . Over 25 years!
The only thing that was sad was the lack of people. There were inly a few tables used. Hoping this will change.

This is an institution. It has met the high quality Chinese cuisine standards consistently. The food is delicious. I love their shrimp which are always jumbo in light handed sauces which vary. It’s the only place I order their beyond delicious fried rice.

I have been to Shun Lee before, but it has been a couple of years. The food was really good. Nice portions and good variety. The interior, however, was very dilapidated. Frayed carpet, uncomfortable chairs, bare spots on the ceiling. If you can get past that, it's worth a visit.

Not as good as it used to be. Maybe lunch wasn’t the best time to go. Spare ribs an Beijing duck legs were way overcooked like they had been warmed over from last nights dinner perhaps. I’ll go back but only for dinner when volume is higher.

Overpriced. There isn't anything special about the place. I don't eat at hole in the wall Chinese restaurants, so perhaps this is a cut above, but I wasn't thrilled at all. Just a basic (expensive) Chinese restaurant riding off a very old image in my opinion.
