Sixth Gear - Cask & Kitchen
Sixth Gear opened in January 2016 and is located on the East Side of South Boston on the corner of L Street and Fourth. Since then, Sixth Gear has been serving both classic comfort food dishes and new ventures into modern American style cooking.
Sixth Gear's interior, reflects a Neo-Victorian style theme (think London mid 1800's - early 1900's) with a modern steampunk style twist. The restaurant offers the choice to observe passers-by in an open window setting or seats at the bar in front of your favorite sports team.
Please be advised that tables will be released to waiting parties if you are 15 minutes late for your reservation. If you need to change time, date or party size please login to opentable, or call 617-765-8836. Parties of 10+ please call or email to reserve.

We returned to Sixth Gear based on a great meal there two years ago. When we arrived we found that even though we had a reservation, the seating area had basically been overrun by a large birthday party. We ended up having to sit at the bar, but the staff took such good care of us, it didn't dampen the evening at all. Thanks to the staff for making us feel at home. And the food did not disappoint. The menu may be limited, but they do a great job with what they offer.
Great atmosphere! The 90s hip hop brunch was cool! I'll definitely go again.
Quiet place with great food! Loved the tacos and the fig and prosciutto pizza!
Went for brunch and it was delicious! Server / bartender very attentive and friendly. Good ambience our party included people from 14yo to over 50 - delicious (great Bloody Mary!)
Made 5pm dinner reservations and there were about 10 people total in restaurant. The waitress came over within a very reasonable time. We order drinks, an appetizer and then dinner. The appetizer was great. My husband and I ordered burgers and my husband ordered his medium. It came to the table very rare. My husband needed to go to the bar after waiting several minutes for the waitress who was also making drinks behind the bar. She brought the plate back to the kitchen and burger was no more than 5 minutes back at the table. It was still rare. She never checked with us to see if the burger was okay. Once people were arriving for the comedy show the waitress was very sporadic and once the show started she barely checked on us. Not a place I would every go to again.
The cheese stuffed hot pretzel bites are always amazing!
We made the reservation and were not told that it was comedy night so when we showed up we were told it was an additional $10 a person, when I mentioned that when I booked there was no mention of this the manger “made an exception”. We were not expecting a comedy show and while the show overall wasn’t bad it would have been nice to know this ahead of time. It was slightly awkward as it was our group of 8 and then 3-4 other groups of 2 there and the rest were the comics. It was awkward to have conversations with our friend group as we felt we were being disrespectful toward the comic by talking, especially since our close proximity to where they were performing. Had we know it was a comedy night we would have gone elsewhere.
Food is either too bland or trying too hard to be unique.. buffalo chicken spring rolls literally only have pulled chicken? No carrots, celery, cabbage, etc, inside, as one would expect.. just chicken in a wonton wrapper? Pork pancakes seem then are the opposite, TOO unusual...?
Ordered a gluten free gluten dish as I am celiac and they made a mistake and did not make it gluten free. I got extremely sick after dinner. The manager did nothing to alleviate this mistake even though I stressed that I am celiac. She told me I should learn the difference between what a corn and flour tortilla looks like. Very upsetting.
Pleasant experience with staff, but just felt like I was at a new restaurant. Food was very average and for the price we expected it to be more unique. All of our food came at different times. With a group of only 6, we would expect the kitchen to be able to bring food out all at the same time. It was super easy to get a table, but it felt a bit awkward because there was only one other table in the place.
The place is very cool and the ambiance is nice. However, it was pretty loud and the service was kind of slow. Food was good, and the menu looks great so I’ll be back.
First Sunday of every month is 90s hip hop brunch. The drinks and food was amazing. Very nice staff and quick service.
Absolutely, a hidden gem! The food was delicious, tasty and seasoned perfectly. Our waitress was charming, friendly and knowledgeable about the different food dishes. We were there initially to see a Comedy show which was great, but will be going back for the food, service and the atmosphere real soon.
The best bartenders and servers in Boston, bar none. Solid higher bar food and great beer selection.
I made a reservation on OpenTable. They even made me reselect times because my preferred time was full. However, on arriving I was told they were hosting a private party. Thank you!
Waited 2 hours for food 🥘
Hello, I am sorry about your experience, we were very short handed due to a car accident from an employee. Id be happy to make it up to you, please let us know. Kristi
the food was ok, not great. my friend's breakfast burger came out raw. fun atmosphere with hip hop brunch. overall disappointment.
Hello, I am sorry to hear about your experience, if not specified, the burgers are cooked to medium temperature. Id b happy to make it up to you, please let us know if we can.
Came here with my girls' part of our girls' weekend. They have a 90s hip hop brunch every 1st Sunday of the month and found that to be a bit disappointing as it was just 90s tunes playing with no other themes adding to it (like hiphop themed drinks/food, outfits etc.). If they do ramp that up it would definitely be another star!. Other than that the service was great, albeit our food did take some time to come out, BUT when it did WOW WOW WOW so good! My Good Morning Pizza was so big that I had to take some with me even AFTER I shared with BOTH of my girls (they kindly provided a plastic bag for me to make a portable cooler- to keep it refrigerated until I got to a fridge- with the ice from the ice bucket that held our champagne for our mimosas, which were great too!) . The food I sampled off their plates, the S'mores French Toast and the Chicken and Waffle Sandwich were also heavenly! And the bill was not bad at all for ordering our food plus splitting a table mimosa (which came out to be about 2 mimosas per person for 3 people) - a little less than $30 per person. Overall if you could just be a little patient for the food , it's a great place to come and eat and drink while bopping to some 90s hiphop jams :)
Terrible food. Everything was frozen, or very bland in taste. Management was downright rude. I would not recommend this place at all.
Service was great ! Super attentive & friendly with everyone
Very good food, relatively friendly if not super timely and attentive service. Not sure about the “reservations necessary” maxim as it didn’t seem to be super busy—maybe to appear in demand? Would go again as the ambiance was a lot of fun and the food pretty good.
We had friendly service but the food was not good. We ordered 2 Cubans and fish tacos - the Cubans were not tasty and the meat was chewy and the fish tacos were too spicy.
FOOD: I noticed the burger was raw after a took my first bite, so I sent it back. When it came back out, it was clear they just put the entire plate in the oven to finish cooking the burger since my bite was still missing and the bun was as hard as a rock. SERVICE: despite being at one of only two tables with people, it took at least five minutes before being offered drinks and we noticed our server was sitting at a table and eating in between food/drink runs.
Strongly advise saving your money on a different mediocre restaurant with slightly better service or food.
Had an excellent Valentines dinner date! Recommend the steak. They were juicy and cooked perfectly. Also recommend coming here for brunch! The chicken and waffle sandwich is the absolute bomb!!
While the place looks very nice, and the service is good (even though there was barely anyone there), unfortunately the food isn't up to par. I keep trying this place in hopes it will be better, but just not a fan. The prices are reasonable, however.
The goal was to eat somewhere that had a calm and relaxed atmosphere on a Thursday night. Sixth gear was perfect for that on that evening
Where do I even begin! From the décor (lighting fixtures, glassware, bathroom) to the ambiance, this hidden South Boston gem was everything we expected and more. The food is amazing and the waiters were super friendly. We attended the 90s hip hop brunch and it was a wonderful event enjoyed by all. Will definitely be going back sooner rather than later :)
Had dinner here last week. You can actually carry on a conversation without yelling! The wait staff was quite pleasant. The selections on the menu go from appetizers to dessert. There are quite a few appetizers to choose from. Then the choices run from ample salads to full meals including tacos, burgers, pizza, steak which was the most expensive dish coming in at $22. Anyone would find something to their liking on this menu. The fried fish dinner was cooked to perfection and not all greasy. The cole slaw was delicious. The wine list was impressive for a neighborhood restaurant. I also saw a creative cocktail list. Our waitress checked in with us several times without being intrusive. I'll definitely be going back. And the steam punk decor is very whimsical!
Nice place. Comfy setting. Good food. Decent prices.
