Skylon is a curate's egg. The location with stunning wide river view is hard to beat, but you are literally paying for that. The staff are welcoming and attentive (apart from not taking coats, which are hard to accomodate at the tables). Skylon's prices - in particular on drinks - are over the top for the fare on offer. Skylon is the 'brasserie' end' of the room, but two of us still paid £150 for 2 courses each and a £40 bottle of wine between us (one of few 'affordable' options on the list). My halibut was delicious but inexcusably tepid - it was cooked OK so must have sat around before despatch to table.
Frankly if I have to spend that much to enjoy this venue I will stick to the Skylon Grill at the other end of the room in future - at least there are tablecloths and comfy seats there ;-)
(However, I was lucky not to book there this time - there was a large and very noisy party taking place in the Grill ).
Heads up for the over-40's - the dim lighting makes a nice ambience but doesn't work well with menus printed in grey, small font. Reading glasses and phone light recommended!

Pre-theatre dinner was really good value and the service was very friendly and attentive. Three courses and a glass of wine was 25 pounds. We also had cocktails which were expensive and unremarkable, which seems like a shame.

The service was friendly, but not very attentive - we wanted to order more drinks, but could not catch the attention of staff.
The quinoa main dish was too salty to eat, but everything else was delicious.
We were seated at a table where one of the seats got knocked every time the staff walked past - which was quite often.

Food excellent - clearly short staffed - pre performance meal- waited 15 mins for a coffee - had to pay and leave in the end. No staff around to help.

I used to really like Skylon - it was somewhere you took someone for a special treat - a real destination. But times have changed, there is so much more competition around & I can’t help feeling that Skylon has faded a little.
It still has potential; it still could be great, but on this occasion, it fell short of the mark.
Maybe it was just the January blues, or maybe because most people were probably dining on the ES offer menu, but the staff seemed tired and lacking in energy, food service was very slow, and little touches were missing (for example, water wasn’t topped up, and even when we asked, it took over 10 minutes).
Our starters were nice - almost worth waiting for! - and it felt like the mains could have been nice - they were well-cooked, and generous with ingredients, but all incredibly salty - especially the risotto. Such a shame, because this really let it down - I managed to eat around half (alongside some bread to offset the saltiness), but then gave up.
I hate food waste, so asked if I could take away the rest (a small spoonful with some salad would have done us for lunch the next day). But apparently this is not possible at Skylon... this also shocked me... I’ve not encountered anywhere for a long time which wouldn’t accommodate a “doggy bag” (occasionally places have charged for a box, or occasionally the packaging has been a little makeshift, but people have always been happy to help).
As a venue, it’s still nice & has a great view, so with a bit of a shake-up could be great again, but I won’t go back unless I hear that things have changed.

If you to a restaurant for location and atmosphere you won't go wrong. If you're going for the food avoid. The food is of poor quality, small portions and poorly cooked. I have been to both the restaurant and the grill. I would avoid both. Have a drink at the bar and eat elsewhere. It is vastly overpriced for the poor quality of the food. Trust me and avoid.

Esperienza orribile

Good brunch - watch the service charge
A good place to go for brunch on a Sunday especially with the bottomless prosecco / burgundy - the portions could be a little larger and I always resent paying 15% when I am sat a bar for someone to pour me a beer !!

It is always lovely going to Skylon. It is my tenth time there and the view, ambience and the space is excellent. The current manager, Ricardo Mimoso, is doing a great job making the necessary adjustments to keep a restaurant like Skylon continue to shine amidst the newer restaurants around London. Well done and keep up the good work

Nice meal for a Christmas get together. Food was pleasant, but very noisy as two large groups were having Christmas parties in the bar area. We actually had a very good table at the window, so we’re very happy with that. Service was mixed, sommelier and lady who I think may have been maitre’d were excellent with a great wine recommendation but the other waiting staff weren’t as attentive.

We had the special 3 course menu which had a reasonable choice of options.
Were not keen on the fizzy white wines which are standard with the meal, and when asked they swapped for the house red, which was of acceptable quality. Although the meals are small, after 3 courses we were quite full up .... probably smaller stomachs with old age.
This is an irregular regular visit of ours as basically we have been many times, but we don't come often.
The service was a little bit slow this time, but there were some large groups that had descended for Xmas parties or something, so it was to be expected. Another enjoyable meal at the Skylon.

I've been to Skylon on a number of occasions over the last few years but I felt rather disappointed this time. The portions seem to have got smaller, the food a bit blander and the service a bit more offhand. The apple and berry crumble made up for it though, and it is very convenient if you are attending anything at the Southbank, but I would once have recommended it as a destination its in own right and I'm not sure I would now.
