What Insiders Are Saying
If you’re looking for serious meats, Smokestak in Shoreditch is your answer. The Southern barbecue, especially the brisket, is the best in London.
Three friends met for lunch and stayed most of the afternoon. We were very fortunate as it was a warm October day and we sat outside people / car watching (so can’t comment on indoor seating/ ambience). Menu is designed for sharing which suited us very well and the food was very good. Wines start at a reasonable price, we have the cheapest red (Rioja) which was excellent. Service was friendly and efficient, we were not hassled to leave even though we were still there at 4.30. Shame they don’t do coffee.
For who like me most of the time eat meat-free, this place is where to go for remember why eating meat sometimes is good! Btw also the eggplant and the salad worth the visit.
Service was terrible. Showed up to our reservation and while they had open space, were asked to go downstairs to the bar while our table was prepped. At the bar, there was no bar tender. Waited ten minutes and went back up to where our table still wasn’t ready and they asked us to get a drink at the unmanned bar... decided to just wait. After being seated, did not get service or water or menus for ten min. Had to stop servers multiple times to ask for water, then drinks but the person who took our drink order wouldn’t take our order for appetizers. Our server finally came and seemed annoyed that he had to serve us and asked for our drink orders again because he forgot what the other person had told him we wanted. Then we had to call him back to order our meal. That was the start and not much better from there...
Great food and staff. Deco is nice and clean facilities. Portions are on the smaller side but the quality and taste packs a punch. Would like to visit again.
All food was too salty!
Love this place. Meat is delicious!
Best BBQ place in London. Consistently high levels of service and food quality. Sea Bream and Ox Cheek are amazing.
We picked this place on a whim, however it turned out to be better than expected. We love the industrial feel, were well looked after, service and atmosphere was great yet not overly noisy so could comfortably chat, food was fabulous and good value considering where you are (Shoreditch). Have already recommended it and were looking forward to going back some time soon...
Food was good and served quickly. Brisket was overpriced for quantity of meat
Always great food but this time the service was really slow and we waited a while for our food. Might be because we were sitting outside.
Really nice spot for a bite to eat. If you like smokey bbq flavour and an atmosphere that equals that you will love this place. Staff were really nice and helpful, food was well priced and options for vegetarians were really interesting.
Smokstak is the best barbecue in London for not only the meats but also the excellent sides that make it more interesting than most BBQ restaurants. It’s a little expensive but worth it.
Perfect as always
Amazing food. Seriously mind blowing. Their very well known bun brisket is one of the best things I got to eat in my life, the aubergine with miso paste and cashew is insanely good, everything you will eat will be beyond your expectations. And not that expensive for the quality you get which makes it even better. Service a bit slow though, everyone is running everywhere and it's hard to get their attention. The place is really cool too, low light industrial vibe which goes pretty well with the smoked meat in your plate.
Excellent dinner at Smokestak, never going to be a particularly light evening, but the meat focused menu offers a great deal of variety and does not disappoint. Inside and outside seating offers a nice view of passersby heading to and from Brick Lane.
Literally everything was amazing. Can’t wait to go back
Been waiting to go here for a long time and totally loved the food in this place. We went on a hot summers day so restaurant wasn't busy at all but the food was excellent. Would certainly recommend.
The food was amazing! But being from Texas the portions are stingy. You pay a ridiculous amount of money for two slices of brisket. It tastes delicious, but to me seems overpriced.
Other than the slow service at the start, and the slow arrival of dishes at the start, the staff and food were amazing. It was about 30 degrees so we sat outside but realised the cutlery is close to useless as we could hardly pick it up...obviously this only happens for about 2 months in England! The ox cheeks and brisket were amazing and the staff kept us alive with cups of ice cubes and constant water! It's a fun place for meat lovers and think there's a vegan dish on there should you need a vegan dish . Very Shoreditch but very good!!! I've been a fan when you were a food truck so will be returning for your amazing food forever!
Such good food and well priced
Locale molto particolare e carino. Ottima ristrutturazione industrial chic.
The food was exceptional, even though this is a smoked/bbq meat place, even the sides and veg is superb. The beetroot and goats cheese was probably the best thing I’ve even tasted!
The ox cheeks were fabulous. My son and I both followed this with the beef brisket, which was soft and full of flavour. On reflection we probably should have ordered on brisket and one plate of ribs; partly because the brisket went cold very quickly but also because the ribs looked good and stayed hotter longer.
We thoroughly enjoyed Friday lunch.
A decent BBQ restaurant. A fairly limited menu, but all items we had (in particular the brisket and beef ribs) were tasty and well cooked. Compared to other BBQ places, portion sizes are small, but good quality. You also don't come away totally stuffed.
Best BBQ restaurant ever
Everything was great from the moment we arrived, from the greet, to the drinks at the bar before the table was ready, Rhiannon was excellent.
Restaurant setting was perfect and the decor is just brilliant.
Food was out of this world, it was all so good, with the stand out being the mushrooms on toast. All food was served in amazing timings, but we never felt rushed.
I manage a restaurant that does similar food which is why I wanted to try this restaurant, and the food blew me away.
Will be back many times I’m sure.
We had to to wait for our table but we had only booked ten minutes before so absolutely understandable. The food was absolutely incredible. The manager came over to apologise for the wait earlier but it was not a problem at all. Our food came out really efficiently and was delicious. Back soon thanks to all
I previously left a review that focussed on the bad service of one service staff, and my experience could not have been more different this time. Every member of staff was flawless, the food was perfect and the drinks were great. I would give 6 stars if I could.
Smokestak is my favourite spot in East London - I always bring friends here who are visiting me or suggest it for newbies to the area. Food is innovative and delicious, good value and the staff are the right balance of friendly and attentive without being overbearing.
Brisket ruled the day but everything was bursting with flavor
It was so delicious and we will definitely be back
Amazing as always. Every person I recoment this place too loves it! You cant go wrong.
I always have amazing meal here
The food is exquisite! It never fails , best place I’ve eaten by far !
Lovely food with a varied menu of different meats. Brilliant service
I was a very regular customer at Smokestak, however the service here has continuously gone downhill. My last experience was by far the worst. Despite being a quite Sunday afternoon and a half empty restaurant, I waited 20min to order my food, another 20min for the plates to be cleared (after they had been empty), and then waited another 30min before someone came back to us to take a dessert order (or if we wanted our drinks topped up perhaps?). I decided to skip dessert entirely and not return to this restaurant again. It’s a true shame because the food here is stellar and competes with the best BBQ in the world.
The food was out of this world, as it was the last time I went. And the service by almost all of our servers really was great, so commendations to them. Sadly, the score was let down by one server who started off strongly but really let us down at the end.
We ordered a round of drinks after out meal instead of dessert and when we received them were told that someone was waiting for our table and we had to pay up and leave in a mildly hysterical manner. Now, I TOTALLY understand that restaurants need their table back and we respected that and paid up. We were then told we could drink our drinks in the bar downstairs, but we were penned in with no seats, right by the toilet. We absolutely wouldn't have minded this but we went up and saw that our table was completely empty, and the server had told us to pay up and leave quite rudely for no reason.
It wouldn't stop me coming back, and perhaps not recommending to a friend. But I would advise that in future:
- If you take a drink order from a table and you know you are going to kick them out when that order arrives, at least give them a heads up before they pay
- If you don't need the table, don't chuck customers that haven't finished off for no reason (especially if they are going to walk past and see it later)
Again, massive commendations to the chefs and all the other servers :)
Chair was uncomfortable and brisket was cold and a little on the measly side, when I was expecting it to be hot. But apart from that the food was delicious and the service was very good.
Amazing! I loved the brisket and roasted beetroot! Will definitely go again
