South Philly Italian Kitchen
South Philly Italian Kitchen is a new food concept developed by Joe The Boss, well known in the South Philly and Center City areas where his culinary talents have used only the finest ingredients. South Philly Italian Kitchen brings you top quality dishes while at the same time maintaining a health conscious dietary menu that is not only fast but affordable.
Small restaurant, a little out of the way, but 100% worth it. The service was great! Everyone was super friendly from the moment we arrived. And the food was amazing! And no matter what you do, get the cannoli! Best I've ever had. We came from Delaware and were looking for a place to eat last minute, found this on open table, and booked a reservation for 7 people. Best decision we made!
Great Owner, nice staff - very accommodating. The homemade mozzarella was worth the trip alone.
This is my 4th time here and I can say the food has been excellent every time. You can’t find home made ravioli like this elsewhere! Chef really cares about the quality of the food going out. Nice byob option!
We love South Philly Italian Kitchen and go there frequently. It has a friendly family-owned congenial atmosphere. The food is always VERY good and comes right from the kitchen -- 15' away -- to your table, so it is piping hot. The staff is very friendly and helpful. A neighborhood gem worth travelling to from outside the neighborhood.
Went during Valentine’s Day so not the best night to judge but considering that, everything was pretty good. Worth checking out.
Went with my boyfriend on Valentines Day. We were disappointed by the limited menu as that wasn’t noted on Open Table. We ordered the mozzarella and roasted peppers and the eggplant salad to start. The eggplant was super greasy but everything else was good. We had to flag down the waitress to order. The ravioli with crab and chicken parm were both good, nothing amazing but tasted good.
The restaurant says that they cook everything to order, and the certainly do. My wife had chicken Marsala, and I had eggplant parmigiana. Both were delicious. I sometimes hesitate to order eggplant parmigiana because it can vary greatly, and some restaurants do not do well with it. Here, it was beautifully done with a light touch and a freshly made tomato and garlic sauce. The chicken Marsala was also excellently done. We have some special diet considerations, and they were handled perfectly. The fact that it is BYOB is an extra bonus. Bravo!
Place was pretty run down -especially the bathroom. food and service were great. Will definitely be back. Need work on ambiance and they will be set.
We had a really nice time!
It was a great meal. every dish was as good or better than anything similar I have had in this neighborhood. Service was also great. Highly recommended BYOB. Fair prices too.
We had an enjoyable dinner at South Philly Italian kitchen. I had a pasta dish and my friend had the eggplant parm. Both were delicious. I intend to go back to try some of the other dishes. We also had the roasted peppers and mozzarella appetizer which was also great. The homemade mozzarella was excellent. The BYOB aspect of the place also makes it very affordable. Strongly recommend.
Great neighborhood byob. Chef know how to put out great food. Homemade pasta is fantastic.
Terrific neighborhood spot.
Thank you, Hope to see you soon!
The space is poorly designed, so it feels like you're sitting in a greasy spoon diner: tables lined up on one side, kitchen lined up across from tables. Large mirrors with oversized, heavy, black frames on the table side only make the room feel smaller. Would work better if kitchen were along the back wall of the very small room, with tables arranged across the floor space, ie, more like a 'real' restaurant. Although we had linen napkins, the utensils were the kind you'd get at a dollar store.
The food was strange, especially for the prices (overpriced, that is), and the linguine scampi I ordered was swimming in a pinkish juice that couldn't rightly be called a sauce. Not great bread. This entree was $19, and my partner's pasta was $17. Neither was worth it, nor the price we paid for salads. If you're sitting in a diner and served diner food, then you should pay diner prices. We ended up with a bill of over $50, not including tip. Not a great experience, although staff and chef were friendly.
Thank you, have a nice day
My wife and I were missing the old Bacio hangout when we heard about the new place and decided to give it a try. We are certainly glad we did. Excellent food, quite setting and a very friendly and funny owner/chef in Joey. And his daughter wait person couldn't be more prompt, helpful, friendly and polite. On the way back to the car my wife said, "I thing we found ourselves a new hangout." Amen to that.
Thank you FrankH, hope to see you soon!
Some of the the food was great - fresh mozzarella with balsamic peppers. Both pasta dishes we got were okay. A little under on flavor. We wished there were more vegetarian choices.
Was looking forward to trying out this new neighborhood restaurant. Service was good but food sub-par. Sauces lack depth of flavor (both red and white sauces). Caprese salad made with grape tomatoes!?!?
One of our party had avstapl
I know that opinions on this restaurant vary greatly but I can only respond base on my own experience, which was by and large wonderful. Went on a Thursday evening (very early, with my nonagenarian mother) and were the first (and only for a while) people in the restaurant. Our server was cheerful and attentive and you are able to see the chef at work in the restaurant. We brought of bottle of wine and were speedily provided with glasses and an ice bucket. We shared a Caesar salad and to my taste the dressing was excellent. House made we were told. We both had the eggplant parmesan and it was clearly made from scratch (i.e., didn't fall off the Sysco truck) with well seasoned, lightly breaded and fried eggplant, a very fresh tomato sauce (not over-sauced) and melted mozzarella. It came with a side of penne pasta with the same sauce. The pasta could have been a bit firmer but was by no means mushy. We were brought a gratis sample of their house made fresh mozzarella and it was wonderful. The only food negative is the bread. Soft and pretty tasteless. An easy fix that others have noted and that I hope they take note of. The menu feels pretty much like an authentic South Philly family restaurant. Straightforward, nothing fancy. Just good Italian food, reasonably priced. There is no special ambiance to report. It's a small room with little to no charm other than the pleasant personalities of the chef and our server. But it's in our neighborhood, within walking distance and we will go again. Hope others will give it a try.
Great food, quick delivery, piping hot! Comfortable setting for casual Fine Italian cuisine. Really like the family rum business aspect of it. The fresh mozzarella and Joe The Boss eggplant salad were amazingly tasty.
The restaurant itself is short on ambiance. It is no frills with an open kitchen (which I liked). The food was decent and the tomato sauce was very fresh. It is BYOB which is great. The service was great and everyone was very nice. The prices were good. I would go back. (But it should be noted that the bread was stale!)
Overall good. I feel they should make their menu smaller. Concentrate on a few items. Chicken parm quite good... Alfredo kind of soupy.
Service was excellent but food was barely adequate.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant----food is so good, fresh, served at the perfect temperature. I did feel bad for our waitress, who had the whole restaurant to serve, which included party of 8.
Worth Repeating! This was our second visit to the restaurant. I couldn't wait to get back to the fresh mozzeralla . Very yummy. Last time, my husband and I had the specials but this time we ordered a standard menu item. We were so full from the meal, we weren't able to order cannolis for dessert, as we did the last time. Worth saving some room for that next time. We enjoyed the food as much as the first time. We were warmly greeted by the chefs and staff and look forward to our next visit.
Way too hot. Needs extensive air conditioning.
Food was good and the service was fine, have to return in the fall.
Great service. Fast friendly service. Food was terrific and piping hot when it was served. Just as our dishes should have been.
Boss salad and gnocchi excellent. I look forward to trying more. Thank you for being in Mt Airy!
We had a delicious meal and our waitress was an efficient and delightful young woman. Highly recommended.
Delicious meal at South Philly Italian Kitchen. The waitress was nice and the chef sent us a complimentary salad and fresh mozzarella. Both were excellent. My spouse had the gnocchi and loved it. I had the Vodka sauce rigatoni. Highly recommend this welcomed addition to Mt. Airy!
Food was only average. Excellent waitress though.
Trying out a new place. Food was excellent. Service was well intentioned and the server was very nice, just as the place was new, kinks where being worked out.
The closest thing you're going to get to being invited to an Italian home for dinner. The whole staff is family and makes you feel part. The menu is a good size and the service was VERY attentive but not intrusive. The home made mozzarella is one of the best around and not to be missed. The pricing is an exceptional value for the quality of the meals. All in all, should be on EVERYONE's list of favorite Italian food.
