As the name of South Place Hotel’s ground floor restaurant might suggest, South Place Chop House takes inspiration from London’s traditional chop houses.
The cooking is skilled and gutsy. A refinement of the conventional 18th Century Chop House style, it’s perfect for contemporary tastes and sensibilities, food you return to: tasty & satisfying.

A favourite for breakfast meetings, great service, delicious food and coffee
Lovely place, easy to find, wine selection delicious, ok menu, was noisy due to an office party/dinner
I had the lamb pie & my guest had the fish so all in all a lovely meal
Delicious food, the steaks were perfect and we had a wonderful evening.
For a restaurant suffering the restrictions currently imposed, one might be forgiven for expecting a heightened level of service and attention to detail. Sadly, quite the opposite. Waiting at the door for a long while whilst watching people doing nothing significant - obviously serving comes first but they were just pootling about.
Then no-one took our breakfast order. Sat like lemons for ages, eventually flagged someone down. They didn't have salmon for the salmon and scrambled eggs so asked for it on toast. Were constantly having to flag people down for any kind of service, more coffee, water had to be asked for...
Toast arrived with no butter or question of butter being preferred, my guests benedict looked decidedly sad for itself as if it had been on the pass for a while, the scrambled eggs themselves were decidedly average.
Overall...a very poor experience - in marked contrast to the Ivy, where they are attentive, friendly, serve good food and create a welcoming environment. I would heavily recommend looking elsewhere than South Place Chop House.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Choice on menu not extensive but the food was very good. Service excellent the venue emptied around late afternoon and then some evening clients arrived but by 20:00 hours the restaurant had emptied again but given the current pandemic overall it was a good atmosphere.
I did a business breakfast. The food was good. I had the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and my colleague eggs florentine. It was tasty and the service was friendly and good
Staff really amateur
Asked what we wanted to drink before we’d sat down
Mains arrived whilst still eating starter
Plate taken away before one of us had finished!!!
Wine glass really dirty
Shame as burger wasn’t bad & sourdough bread starter lovely
I got two tinny fish cakes with a bit of green salad on the side, that’s for £19. I had to ask twice if that was a starter or main course. Even by London standards that’s a rip off!
Bottomless brunch with free flowing Prosecco. Great afternoon. With brilliant service. Food was excellent too. Thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon. Waitresses were very attentive. Didn’t have an empty glass once.
I have been here once before and loved it so I went again. I was disappointed that only an hour after opening for dinner they were already out of ribeye but the filet was also very good. The Apple rhubarb crumble was absolutely delicious as well. I’ll be back again!
Lovely evening with a great friend. Had the Evening Standard menu. The Flat Iron steak was delicious - soup a little boring! Enjoyed it with a delicious Malbec. Very good, attentive but not intrusive, waiter.
I thought the restaurant's decor and atmosphere was really lovely. The table was a good size for the party of 5 we had. The menu had some lovely options, however I felt that the size of the dishes we ordered varied greatly, although this wasn't reflected in the price. For example, the chicken pie was quite small at £18, and the pork dish was enormous and only a couple of pounds more expensive. I also thought the service was quite slow, especially considering we arrived quite early at 12.15pm.
Overall, it's a convenient option for a business lunch.
Service has just massively gone down hill. They seem to completely fail to log attendance (about 5 x in a row now)
I’m a frequent attender because of work breakfasts but now get a no show email nearly every time i go
If it continues will just find a new place to go.
Been a few times and the food has always been very good but it was really disappointing this time.
Way overpriced for a small plate salad and 2 glases of wine
Very disappointing- when booking I opted for the deal menu - which wasn't offered to us.
The food was fine, nothing special. Long wait between courses, and waiter made a mistake with the order. No rush to go back.
Nice place for lunch reasonable food and nice atmosphere.
Very noisy: loud music coming from the bar + other music in the restaurant
Very poor service and food to match.
A quiet unexpected meal out after Christmas. I’ve been
here many times and the food is always delicious !
The steak perfect and the vegetables too
Great service, great steaks, lively bar ... very good Good indeed for a restaurant associated with a hotel. Worth going even if you don’t stay at the hotel.
All round good place to eat, wholesome and hearty.
Breakfast with friends on a damp rainy day - we were welcomed and made to feel at easy - the baby in our group was well looked after and offered a highchair. Very patient and helpful. Food great, ambiance great. Thank you will be visiting again. Francesca
Friendly and efficient service that catered to our special requests as well.
A regular favourite, for good reason! Great food and wonderful atmosphere and service...
Food was luke warm (albeit tasty), and waiters screwed up giving the right food to the right people...
I’m very picky with my steak but the ribeye with shallot and marrow sauce was the BEST steak I’ve ever had. Cooked perfectly med/rare yet still hot, very tender and perfect taste. Desserts were delicious too. Would definitely go back.
We went for Sunday lunch and really enjoyed both roast chicken and roast beef. The portions are well sized and come with all of the trimmings you'd expect (although the yorkshire puddings didn't arrive until more than halfway through the main course). It's a very relaxing atmosphere so great for a Sunday lunch.
Excellent food. Great service and good wine
Lovely food, but the service wasn’t great. Slow and they didn’t know what half of the menu was or if they even had it
We had a fabulous time. Food was excellent. Service was spot on. The staff were very accommodating, polite and friendly. Thank you for a wonderful brunch!
Good place with nice ambience and good for a business lunch. Busy but not cramped. After being asked a few times if were ready to order suddenly there was noone available when we were, had to wait 10 mins to get someone's attention. Food took 30 minutes to arrive. I get that it's busy but for business lunches I think it should arrive more quickly. Food was great but I only got to eat 50% of mine before I had to leave for a meeting.
High prices, small portions, loud music, what's not to love?
Why use the name "chop house" when there is nothing resembling a chop on the menu? (a fish "chop" doesn't count).
My starter of bone marrow consisted of a shin bone with a tiny smear of marrow remaining. I can only assume that the restaurant is championing the use of cows that have survived leukaemia.
The wine list is highly restricted, with few wines available by the glass.
This place is best understood as a hangout for Shoreditch hipsters: anybody with an interest in food should avoid it.
Awful.
Great staff, good portions and nice food. Lovely ambiance and music not too loud so you can chat.
The bottomless brunch at the Chop House never fails to please however I was disappointed to see that the bottomless option has been changed. I preferred it when there was a choice of red, white and rose wine, sometimes with a fizz option. The food and service was great as usual.
Food was below average but service was absolutely exceptional! Staff went out of their way to ensure we had a lovely time and I can’t thank them enough :-)
Merci beaucoup à Camélia la serveuse Française qui nous a été de très bon conseils. Resto sympa.
My sense is they can be chronically understaffed depending on the day
Still it’s very close to the office and usually quick so we keep coming....
Brought my partner here for his birthday and enjoyed it very much. The squid was lovely but possibly had maybe abit too much for a starter . Which is good if you have a huge appetite.
The fillet steak was cooked to perfection, my partner even said the steak was up there with some of the best he's eaten!
Pudding, the sticky toffee pudding didn't last 5 mins! Went down very well, overall would definitely recommend this place to anyone, would be nice to extend the menu in some ways, and add some popular starters such as garlic bread and halloumi ect, but other than that, thankyou for your amazing service, very quick and speedy.
