South Sands Hotel Restaurant
Fabulous food, service and views. Excellent menu choices.
My husband had the crab claws as a starter and it was delicious. The goats cheese panecotta lacked some flavour but was well presented. we both enjoyed the delicious duck breast cooked perfectly
Sadly, we felt rushed and the portions sizes were not great for an evening meal out when you purposely haven’t eaten to save yourself for a supposed dining treat.
Having been seated between to a very lively table of 22 and a barking dog, my date was some what ruined.
Shan't bother again.
we were offered the set lunch menu, not over imaginative, expensive with very little fish.
It took a long time to be told there was also a bar menu, this was better but expensive.
We were told the crab salad was large by the waiter but it was small and the crab was already
mixed with mayonnaise. We were a party of 6 and we were all disappointed.
The waiter was new but should not have been serving until he had been better trained.
One drink was completely forgotten by the waitress who took the order.
Our daughter and three of her friends also had lunch on the same day and were very
disappointed, this is such a shame as the location is great.
The restaurant was pretty empty, it was a bank holiday, so perhaps word has spread that
South Sands is not value for money.
The view from the restaurant was superb. We did not feel welcomed as a family. The food was very average but pricey. We do not expect dry burgers, hard burger baps, 1 sausage for £9 (kids meal) for the prices charged. The barman tried charging us for an additional £6 drink, which we did not have. Overall, we have eaten at plenty of pricey establishments but would not return to SS, despite its beautiful setting.
Great food and nice atmosphere - we were just a bit smoked out by the log fire!
Excellent Birthdsy lunch right on the beach
We had a nice dinner at South Sands though ambience somewhat hampered by the over lit dining room. Service and quality of food was ok.
Eight of us ate at the Hotel on Saturday night as part of my wife Mary's 60th birthday celebrations. It was a stylish and enjoyable experience and we thought the Restaurant was very professionally run. The portion sizes are now about right and the menu very varied. I chose the crab cake and then a rather unusual choice- a mini steak suet pudding, both of which were delicious. The tomatoey "amuse- bouche" and provision of a slice of special bread with spicy butter were a good idea. Others enjoyed their fish and duck mains. Everyone enjoyed their desserts which were very well presented and delicious. The South Sands have gone for the idea of a South Sands House wine at £23.50 for red, rose and white and that helped to keep the cost containable; we liked the Rose and White one particularly. I think the prices need to stay as they are for the foreseeable future to keep your growing customer base on board!
The food was good, but not as good as I’ve had there in the past. Also over priced for what you actually get on your plate.
The dessert menu was a big let down, definitely need to bring Cheese cakes back to the menu they were stunning every time I’ve had one before. How ever the staff were lovely, and the hotel and views are simply beautiful as always. Undecided if we will be returning any time soon.
I have never been disappointed with this hotel! You are greeted by a warm and pleasant atmosphere in a very well decorated venue where a high class of food and service is given without being pretentious. Always so welcoming and friendly and for me in particular I cannot thank the staff enough for always going above and beyond to cater for my long list of food intolerances even developing an individual menu for myself. It is well worth a visit and if you can a stay! I would recommend this venue to everyone and wish I lived closer so could come more often. The manager and staff should be proud of the service provided!
Food was a little disappointing this time. The amuse-bouche was lovely, and the starter (Mushrooms) was also excellent, but the main course (Gurnard) was a little overcooked and served on some tired and rather tasteless risotto. Creme-brulee for dessert was also disappointing. The atmosphere and service were, as usual, excellent. We go there often and are usually delighted with everything, so this was unexpected, which perhaps makes it worse.
A fabulous spot for lunch. A firm favourite for both quality food and excellent service.
Excellent fish and superb wine. All local and fantastically fresh. This was a special get away for my husband and I and it absolutely delivered.
We just love it hear. Never a bad visit. Will be back in 2018!
Brilliant location could not be nearer to the beach, food was very good and the staff were exceptionally friendly, we enjoyed our 2 day stay
This is now our 4th visit to South Sands - we always love coming here and it is so dog friendly that it is a pleasure to bring our dogs with us. We wanted to have Xmas lunch here but they were only allowing hot guests to have lunch on Xmas day. We booked lunch on Boxing Day. We arrived expecting to find the usual Xmas lunch type menu but were delighted to find a good selection of local fish dishes and a much lighter menu than Xmas lunch.
As always the food was lovely - service was great. Really helpful and pleasant European staff who couldn't do enough to help. Lunch was £45 pp excluding booze. Total bill for 5 was £325 which was pretty good value at this time of year.
It is always such a pleasure to come here.
Lovely dinner for my husband’s birthday. Great service and one of the best meals we had in salcombe
Really disappointing food. Flavourless overchilled starters. Rubbery chocolate tart . Cold room.
I thought it was very expensive for quite a light lunch, but the sea view was wonderful and the service was friendly and helpful.
We stayed at the hotel as we were recommended it for our anerversary, I thought it was overpriced for what it was offering, with regards the meal it was ok but nothing to write home about, food was not very warm, very small amount, the desert was lacking imagination and the cheese and biscuits was very bland, on the upside the staff were very helpful and seemed happy to be working there
Thoroughly enjoyable evening- good simple well cooked food with a dash of excitement. Always well looked after. Fantastic views in the light summer evenings.
An excellent meal and wonderful setting overlooking the sea. Very helpful and courteous staff. The only thing I was surprised about was that yapping dogs were allowed in the restaurant. Otherwise I would thoroughly recommend South Sands for lunch.
great view over South Sands. Staff and service very good. Menu has wine recommendations for each course by the glass which is novel and helpful. Food very good. Overall quite pricey but worth it for a special occasion.
After staying at South Sands hotel in October 2016, I decided to return with my nieces from Scotland for a special birthday lunch for them both. I had booked the table 2 months in advance and had asked three times (twice via email and once on the phone) if the chef could write a 'happy birthday' messages on their dessert plates. We had lunch there on Friday and the location, service and food were lovely, but I must say I was really disappointed that the chef didn't write a birthday message. I did not comment at the time, because I thought two emails and one phone call to remind them, would be suffice, but sadly it wasn't. Nevertheless, the experience was lovely and the food good. The food and service is a tad expensive, but a good time was had, so was worth the £200 lunch bill. Many thanks
Cannot over exaggerate how wonderful we found your Restaurant. It was our Wedding Anniversary and your staff made us and our guests feels so welcome. Best table in the house and a delightful greeting came to us on a plate with chocolate writing and four French Macarons. Yum. Food was beautiful and the recommended fizzy wine - Lyme Bay - expensive but worth it. All in all a thoroughly pleasurable experience and one which we would happily repeat in a heartbeat. As locals from Dartmouth we have already recommended it to our friends. As you can see we gave 5 Stars in every category. Incidentally the location is beautiful and conducive to relaxing, fine dining. Loved it! Loved it! Blue Cheese Panna Cotta - how clever and simply delicious. The luncheon only went on from there to bigger and even more luscious plates of beautifully prepared food. Don't take my word for it, folks. Go there.
When we arrived the table they offered us was right next to two other large groups and so it was very noisy. They were great about finding us another table that was quieter for us. Food was good, wine list very interesting and excellent service.
Most enjoyable meal and all very well presented and one of our family said the fish finger sandwich was the best they had ever had. I personally enjoyed the crab arancini...a new one for me. Service was good to begin with but as the restaurant started to fill up it became slower and slower and when we had ordered some cocktails they completely forgot to put the order in at the bar. Puddings also on the pricey side and are higher than some London restaurants. We have been before and would definitely go again. Decor is up to date and being on the waterfront is just lovely!
Lovely food, really enjoyed our meal and the spectacular views... worth a visit
We went for a Sunday lunch and were very impressed. Good choice on menu starters and desserts were to die for!! Well worth a visit and will definitely come back!!!
To go with a spectacular view, the food was fascinatingly complex and beatifully presented.
We went for my husband's birthday while on holiday nearby. We've been before - a few years ago. The service was patchy - nuts requested with pre dinner g&t in the bar were forgotten, ladies toilet had empty soap dispensers ehich when I told Reception they apolgised for as theyd meant to replace them. Food was 'fine dining' 'chefy' style - i did enjoy my lamp rump dish but found the mackerel starter just ok - fresh and light but a bit acidy. The dessert of chocolate tort was dense and rather heavy. The dining room is a pleasant airy space and stylish with views out over the very pretty beach and estuary. We thought the price point wasnt reflected in the quality of the meal. Thats Salcombe for you! The hotel and restaurant have the potential to be really special. Sorry to be harsh in my comments but if to wants to charge full prices it just needs to turn it up a several notches in terms of food, value and service. Come on guys!!!
Super venue, lovely food, great service and even the weather behaved!!
Portions were very small, fish was over cooked. I would expect a much better experience for the price.
We booked for Sunday lunch including my 3 year old daughter. Fantastic friendly welcome and the staff went out of there way to ensure my daughter was happy. This of course made our meal the most relaxing and enjoyable we had for a very long time. Thank you from a very happy mummy
Stayed for one night. Hotel is very comfortable but restaurant is weak link. Food is ok but staff are very inexperienced. They're young and very friendly but have no idea about how to run a restaurant.
Nobody knew anything about the wine list at dinner and we were interrupted by a constant stream of the youngsters asking if everything was alright. At breakfast they took 20 minutes to produce two soft-boiled eggs, which (when they eventually arrived) were rock solid...
Absolutely fantastic meal! Great staff and fabulous food...
A fine meal at a leisurely pace. Service a little slow (Easter Sunday) but the staff were aware and apologetic. Food was delicious.
We have been to the South Sands on many occasions as it is such a wonderful and picturesque location, looking over the beach and sea. The restaurant cope very well with children and are very laid back. However having ordered the children's food ahead of our own, for obvious reasons in that they were hungry and its much easier to get them sorted before the adults can enjoy their food, they still served the adults starters before the children!!!!! why is this so difficult to organise? Also the starters were miniscule and out of very few choices for main they had no beef option available... My crab risotto really lacked flavour and the table next to us had mussels which weren't even on the menu, which seemed very unfair as we would have loved mussels as a choice.
