South Sands Hotel Restaurant
Some of the best seafood we have ever eaten! We had the crevettes and calamari to start, followed by crab linguine and a crab sandwich, which were all without exception excellent! It was our 25th wedding anniversary and the staff surprised us with a ‘Happy Anniversary’ decorated plate with some fresh fruit and a chocolate treat. It is not cheap, but wonderful for a treat and therefore value for money for the experience.
Absolutely superb! The staff friendly and professional. The menu is excellent and good value especially if you like Seafood. Wide ranging wine list which the staff are knowledgeable about. Great setting looking over the bay with interesting design features in the hotel.
Wont do steak medium rare.
Amazing place service and staff and food all 100% thank you see you soon Vernon Cook
We visited the Hotel for afternoon tea as part of my Father-in-law’s 90th birthday celebrations. We were very disappointed with the failure to implement arrangements that we had made with SSH before the visit and again on the day.
1.My wife had stressed when making the original booking that a member of the party suffered from a nut allergy and that no nuts should be included as part of the tea. She also rang on the morning to confirm again that the request had been noted and was assured by the receptionist that this would be taken care of.
2.However when we arrived and eventually the tea was served it was obvious that this had been overlooked and the cakes contained nut ingredients across the choices including almonds etc. We did not complain at the time simply because it was a celebratory occasion but we made sure that the particular guest was aware and advised accordingly.
3.As part of the meal several in our party had other menu choices and when the bill arrived at the end of the meal, the afternoon tea (for two) charge had been levied – despite the fact that we had provided a Voucher to the waiter at the table before ordering. The bill was withdrawn and amended accordingly.
We have used the Hotel restaurant numerous times in the past and have always been impressed by the service. However on this occasion it fell below the usual high standards
We were greeted most pleasantly. A beautiful table with views out to sea. The service impeccable. The food delicious, fresh and of high quality. Thank you South Sands Hotel.
WE arrived late because of a storm and stressed as our disabled daughter had just had surgery and the welcome and service and food were fabulous
Lovely lunch! X
Really enjoyed our afternoon tea here, despite a small hic-cup over the number of people having it. That's one of the only reasons for not a 5. The only other is that the website says smart casual, but there were people with dogs (don't get me wrong, I love dogs) and beach wear, and walking boots etc. I would have been quite happy to come dressed like that had the website not said "smart" casual. That said great staff, good food, and you cant fault location for the view. The on site infused Gin is worth the trip on its own.
Overpriced and not very nice food. Good view but wouldn’t recommend to anyone.
Our meal was excellent. It was very tasty and plentiful, artfully presented and very enjoyable!
Perfect beachside setting for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Amazing views, food & service in beautiful but relaxed surroundings.
The staff were all friendly and attentive we sat by the fire in the Lounge before our meal which was so relaxing I tried a pimms cocktail priced at £9 which is what you would expect I think it was good value for money and very nice the food was lovely we weren’t rushed in any way we totally enjoyed our evening and will definitely go again when we are next down in Salcombe 🙂
Our experience a the hotel was acceptable, but nothing out of the ordinary or special.
Delicious food but felt that the starter of squid and the shared cookie dough dessert were overpriced. The squid portion was very small and we noted that it was marked sold out immediately after our order. Perhaps this led to a small portion for the price charged.
Went for an afternoon cream tea for a friend's birthday. The scones were delicious and good value for money. It was very quiet as a Friday afternoon in winter but it was a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and service was very good. Lovely views across South Sands beach and across to East Portlemouth. Would definitely return!
Great evening last night for Valentines. Really good food.friendly and attentive service. Great atmosphere.lovely location
Can not recommend highly enough
Having not been for a while I thought I’d book a treat for New Year’s Day. Unfortunately it was disappointing. The staff were lovely but there wasn’t enough of them and although the food was tasty it lacked in various areas. I’m hoping this was an end of holiday period thing and will support it again but not with guests first.
Dear 'LisaD' Thank you for writing a review. I'm sorry to hear your New Years Day visit was disappointing, hopefully on your next visit you will be more impressed. Best Wishes Freya
It was an ideal venue and location for our weekend getaway, with a great view over the bay and a wonderful contemporary look and feel to room and hotel. Would recommend to anyone looking for similar and will also consider a revisit.
Great food, excellent attentive staff, can’t fault it....
Stopped over for an anniversary and were expecting good things as we'd had good recommendations from friends. The restaurant and food was as good as we'd been told. Noticed especially was how great the staff were.
An anniversary experience worth repeating!!
The service was hilariously bad.
The waiting staff are obviously not trained very well. However, they were delightful people and did their best.
The food was good and obviously the view was fantastic.
Maybe they should have the window cleaner clean the windows in the morning rather in the middle of lunch, he didn’t have a delightful mid drift and we would have rather seen the great view.
Goodness knows how they cope when the restaurant is full.
Go to this place, it’s great, we had a ball but please don’t expect Claridges service, more like Faulty Towers.
Enjoyable Birthday evening. Service was not as good as it should have been for the prices. Slow especially on arrival. Lovely views and food was good.
Returning to South Sands after quite a long time (years rather than months) it was good to find that the good things we remembered are still firing on all cylinders - location, ambiance, food and wine. Definitely worth a visit.
My only negative comment would be that a couple brought their dog into the dining room and it was sat on a seat next to them. I personally dislike dogs in restaurants and whilst it did not bark or cause a nuisance I just do not feel it appropriate for dogs to be admitted.
Have been many times which in itself, says a lot!
The weather was perfect for having lunch outside on the terraced deck
Sun shining and sea calm
Lobsters in Season
Not too busy for a Sunday lunch time
Food & service were good and easy parking
What more could One want...
A great Sunday lunch out in a great spot with perfect weather
Very enjoyable indeed ...Thank You!
Only one vegetarian option on menu , felt like I had stepped back 30 yrs , can’t remember last time I visited a restaurant where I didn’t get a choice and increasingly more now also have vegan choices
We were staying at South sands and regretted not eating there on a previous stay so booked a table. The food was very pricey for the quality and amount. Afraid we didn’t think it lived up to our expectations which was disappointing as as a hotel guest breakfast and afternoon tea is excellent. We won’t be eating there on our next stay.
Superb location, the restaurant is quite noisy, varied menu, very nice staff.
Lovely setting and decor. Food ok but very expensive and service poor.
Lovely position. Friendly staff. Food was really good and portions not too large or small. Lovely birthday surprise for my husband - a plate of macaroons with happy birthday written in chocolate. Good selection of food on menu for all tastes. Only downside was bill was incorrect - charged twice for drinks - but this was quickly put right. Will be back.
Fresh and delicious food with great service from friendly staff
I chose the South Sands restaurant, having dined there before on a number of occasions, as a lovely spot to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary - good food and nice surroundings with a wonderful view was the objective.
We decided not to have a starter but ordered some drinks to have whilst waiting for the main course. However, after a long wait I queried with the waiter where our drinks had got to and he responded that they were on there way but when pressed he said the bar was very busy. At this point the restaurant was no more than 25% full - not massively busy! After a further extended wait I got up in frustration and went to the bar, to find our drinks sitting on a tray waiting to be collected & the bar staff busy in conversation with occupants of the bar. I claimed our drinks and returned to our table to find our main course being served!
My wife thoroughly enjoyed her chicory on polenta however my halibut looked & tasted as though it had dried out under lights - a great shame for such a magnificent fish.
The trifle that followed was a fashionable “deconstruction” consisting of a block of over gelatined custard and jelly, a blackberry, 2 raspberries with a coulis coating and a dollop of cream covered with a sprinkle of crumb. Presentation appeared to be the priority with this sweet.
I took a party of ten to this restaurant last year for lunch and it was fabulous, however, on this occasion it sadly fell short. The food could have been better but most notably there was a lack of service from one particular waiter.
Consistently lovely restaurant for lunch with a group of all ages - kids menu particularly popular! Only gripe was that mussels are not served in pots any more!
This restaurant is perfect for a dinner in South Sand, south Devon. The views are amazing with the wonderful food and excellent service.
The ambiance is excellent with views of the beach and estuary. The meal was very good, though a little slow in arriving, for which they apologised, and as it was a Sunday they ere probably very busy. We didn’t mind he wait as there was plenty going on on the beach for us to watch while chatting. We have been a few times and will be going again. Recommended.
Fresh fish cooked and served at it’s best . A most enjoyable evening , fabulous table over looking the beach .Visited many times never disappoints!
Had insects on my strawberry desert to be told they wouldn’t harm me didn’t bother in the end. Not a very varied menu all very rich need some more basic food on menu also overpriced
Did not notice when paying bill gratuity was already charged, although I noticed when home on the bill it is discretionary. (Who would be bold enough remove it at this point is questionable) However there was also a tip plate at the point of paying. A suggestion of a gratuity would be a more acceptable when settling the bill. I wonder if the staff get any of the gratuity as it seems odd to add an additional plate for any further contributions!!! which we ladies did.
No problems in tipping staff they work hard for their pay but needed to point this out.
Our starter was enjoyable but the hazelnuts were forgotten and the goats cheese was minimal. Not good value for money although we enjoyed the ambience of the dining area.
Dress code as advised on booking was really not needed as anything seemed to be acceptable on a hot day!! We ladies are always dressed appropriately.
Good fish, nice views outside. Not the cheapest meal to be had in Salcombe but the location is worth it
