Service was a bit slow on our visit. Constant flickering lights very annoying and spoilt ambience.
Food ordered was fabulous, two items not available on the starter menu which was disappointing.
Wine ordered was full of sediment which was not the their fault but again left us feeling underwhelmed.
The food was faultless - generous autumnal pre-starter selection followed by Foie Gras, Cote De Boeuf and Chocolate pud. Lovely space, simultaneousy cosy & classy. Service was a little slow / inattentive and lacked a sommelier / confident explanation of each course but overall a great date night out.
Perfect blend between English charm en quality food, highly recommended !
We have had many fantastic meals and excellent service previously, normally 5 star. This time however I have to say the whole experience with the exception of the food which as always was 5 star, was extremely disappointing. When we first walked through the door we were waiting over 5 minutes before anyone came to greet us. The table was right next to the speaker to this was not ideal. The service was average compared to normal simple thing like apart from the first glass of wine I had to pour our own for the duration of the meal.
The positive was that your marketing worked very well with regards to the 2 for 1 offer as we originally had no intention of eating out last Friday but when I received the email we booked straight away but the only table available was 21:30.
I presume this will be a one off experience and will not stop us eating here again as we normally have a beautiful experience and always love your food.
I would not put this one disappointing experience on social media as it does not reflect the many previous enjoyable evenings we have enjoyed.
I am pleased that you requested feedback and I'm always interested to see if someone takes time to read them. I guess I will find out should someone care to contact me via email

We ate early, so it was very cosy with just us in the restaurant. Food excellent and as they say, reassuringly expensive! Will definitely go again.
It was great experience! We were party of 4, very fortunate to booked a table at a very last minute. Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable - I’m dairy free, and it wasn’t an issue. Everyone including me enjoyed food very much.
I took my partner to Stovells for a birthday meal because we wanted to spend a night out of London and the Mexican taster menu looked interesting.
I lost track of how many dishes there were, and the presentation throughout was excellent but unfortunately a number of dishes failed to deliver on flavour.
With Mexican food, I expect a real punch or chilli, garlic and lime but this did not come through in enough dishes. I appreciate that everyone has a different heat tolerance but this could have been combatted by having a little dish of chilli sauce alongside the food, for guests to add at their own discretion, as you would find in any Mexican eatery.
The food was all cooked perfectly; the sea bass and quail were tender and succulent, there just wasn’t enough of the Mexico with either dish.
Usually, when I am eating a taster menu, I find myself wishing there were more of certain dishes, but in this case some of the dishes could have been scaled down in size. There were too many carbs through the meal, to the point where my partner could hardly eat the final
dessert course. We noticed that the ‘Pinata’ dessert we were served was the same as that being given to a la Carte diners. It was a great dessert but it was a lot to get through as a trio of desserts.
Although I felt that many of the dishes could be improved, the food was generally good and I can’t fault the effort that must have gone into preparing the meal but if you are charging £75 a head, you are in Michelin star territory and the quality of the meal did not justify the price tag.
I would not recommend the taster menu but the a la carte looked interesting and decent value.
Never fails to deliver on all levels of service, food quality and value.
the food was lovely, topped off by an incredible melt in the mouth tart tatin, the 3 course lunch menu for 28 pound was an absolute bargain. the restaurant is lovely, in an old inn with open fires etc. the ambience is smart but relaxed and the service was exceptional. we loved it. Ill be coming back for the 10 course mexican taster menu that we saw other diners eating.
4th visit. Food is good although menu is pretty static despite saying it is constantly changing. Service was lacking and seemed inexperienced: Barman had poor English and would not give me drinks menu, eventually waiter provided one and commented that it would take a while as we ordered 4 cocktails. During the meal waiters were fine but nothing more than food carriers - no introduction or explanation of food or even checking that everything ok. Not worth the 12.5% auto added. Restaurant lacked atmosphere. Not sure I will be rushing back.
Warm welcome and delicious food. Only minor moan was very expressive coffee with one small petit fours.
Delicious food, excellent presented. Wide range of wines and cocktails on the menu too.
Beautifully simple restaurant and the service was of a high standard.
Would go back again without a doubt
Sunday Lunch - Wonderful meal at this lovely 16th century inn restaurant. Sublime food - so rare for a Sunday lunch fixed menu. A little quieter than I recall and waiter/manager was not quite as engaging as I remember but such a brilliant culinary dining experience more than made up for it.
As outstanding as always. The pork terrine was delicious, the lamb simply melted in the mouth. Cannot recommend enough.
This was an expensive mistake. Stovells were highly recommended to me. I booked 6 weeks in advance as a surprise anniversary present for my husband. Our experience was dreadful. We booked for 7.45. We had to ask twice to be shown to our table at 8.15. We had our starter at 9.15! And then we were given the wrong ones ! It was 10pm by the time we had our main. We had to ask each time for drink top ups. I requested more water for the table twice
Fine dining? I don’t think so.
Amazing food and service! Waiters very friendly!
Very cosy and amazing ambiance.
Excellent food and friendly attentive service. Menu de Jour was excellent value.
We love this restaurant! Beautiful food and charming place.
Disappointed, food excellent but service lacking, very difficult to engage with staff, generally disinterested. Requested bill three times, card payment machine twice. Wine list extensive but prices tend to be high, there should be a greater price range, we went for the superb food , not fine and expensive wines. Fully appreciate why so many emails are received offering “deals” , focus on the service to attract customers .
A most pleasant lunch excellent plate de jour with exceptional service will go back.
Had a lovely lunch. Each course was very tasty. Staff very nice - attentive but not overbearing.
Excellent value - had the Menu du Jour two for one offer - couldn't fault anything.
My wife and I went to Stovells to celebrate my birthday with two friends visiting from Australia. We eat at Stovells reasonably regularly, perhaps 2-3 times a year over the past 6 years or so and it’s a favourite of my wife and I, the real “go to” restaurant for a celebration. We ate on a Tuesday evening so the restaurant was quieter than normal, about 14 diners including us. The welcome was friendly and efficient, there were only two staff working front of house.
The ambience of the restaurant is excellent, timeless. The food as ever was the star, with one exception from my viewpoint. We had two excellent bottles of wine, both Viogniers, one from Argentina which was crisp and astringent. The Australian wine from the Beechworth Estate was outstanding, really delicious and powerful. Not cheap at £80, but really good example of an Aussie Viognier. I was slightly disappointed to be informed by the head waiter that the BYO deal was still on on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, it isn’t mentioned on the website. However, no complaints about the wines we had.
Our crab starter was magnificent absolutely delicious. The dill dressing was off the scale, such a fresh flavour. The mains were terrific, my wife described her halibut as meaty and juicy with a delicious sauce. I ate the roast veal sweetbreads and lentils - Wow! Rich and lemony, really gorgeous. Our friends had the Côte de Porc which they also said was delicious, both bones were well chewed!!
The only disappointment for me was the Chocolate Dessert. The mousse was piped in small pieces around a large circular bowl, which had a very textured pattern. This made the mousse difficult to lift off the plate with a spoon. The lavender ice cream was a small quenelle, with no discernible lavender flavour.
All in all though an excellent meal, Stovells delivered for us again.
The food tastes fantastic and overall, isn’t bad value for the quality of food and service provided. My only real negative is that despite emailing and phoning ahead to check the options available to me considering some allergen foods I wanna avoiding, I was left disappointed. I was told that it wouldn’t be a problem to avoid dairy and soya, but was not told that the majority of the menu would be excluded from my choices as a result. I assumed that, considering the standard, the dishes could be adapted. I had to watch my partner eat much more food than me as I couldn’t eat much and left hungry. Having been before a few times, this was by far the worst visit. I would have liked to have been given more info regarding what foods would have been available so I could have pre orders what I’d like without the allergens. That being said, the wine was excellent and the sommelier outstanding .
This was our 4th visit to Stovells and once again the service and meal was outstanding living up to expectations.
We had a nice and quiet Thursday lunch at Stovells. It wasn’t our first time and won’t be our last either. We are always very happy with the service and food. Thank you for an enjoyable lunch.
A great venue with very welcoming and helpful staff. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Wonderful food in a beautiful setting. A lovely birthday treat for my other half. We're even thinking of coming back on our wedding day!
We have been to Stovells before. When it first opened the food and service was excellent. Sadly this is no longer the case.
We thought we would try again as there had been changes made with the menu and decor.
The menu has certainly not changed for the better.
I had the duck pate to start, which was a very wet slimy texture, The butter's provided for the bread were in my opinion margarine and most certainly not butter.
For my main I had the beef wellington this was my best course of the meal but the minuscule amount of mash I felt let this dish down, I personally would be ashamed to serve such a small amount, and lets be honest potatoes are not expensive.
As for dessert I chose the chocolate mousse, I could not believe what I was served. The chocolate mousse was piped in 4-5 minuscule rosettes on the plate with a scoop of ice cream in the centre. The portion size was a joke.
My Sister and her Hubby had the cote du beef which was served with half a lettuce and chips.
We noticed that the restaurant is not as busy as it used to be which I feel is such a shame. It goes to show we are not alone in our opinion of the restaurant.
Excellent service, but rather lack lustre cooking. Generally over-seasoned.
Excellent service. Wine rather more expensive than other restaurants. Our bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc was fairly ordinary but £50 a bottle. Starter and dessert were very good. The main of crab ravioli in consume was quite tasteless. I would not have know this was crab if tasted blind. Generally a pleasant lunch. Would try again.
Could not fault anything. The service was excellent, with just the right amount of interaction. The food was, as expected, faultless. Friendly staff, excellent food and comfortable surroundings, what more could you ask.
This was our first visit for some time as our previous visit had been disappointing. We were with a couple of foodie friends as our treat for their golden wedding anniversary.
We were surprised and upset when the starter my friend ordered had run out. A 1.30pm booking for Sunday lunch is not unduly late so I would have expected all choices to be available, especially on a relatively small menu.
In general, our food was very good with an enormous portion of beef and well cooked vegetables. Three of us had the chocolate dessert, which was excellent but again, my friend was disappointed with her choice of the berries and summer pudding which she said was dry and more like a doughnut than a summer pudding.
Overall the service was better than our last visit but I still feel Stovells need the concentrate on the customer more. The lack of a desired starter and the dry dessert were met with pleasant apologies but I felt no real attachment of any importance to the shortcomings.
We were pleased to meet the new Maitre and we hope under his influence, the front of house will begin to shine.
We went for my birthday lunch on a Sunday. Lovely food, beautifully presented. Service struck exactly the right balance between friendly and unobtrusive. Would highly recommend.
Wonderful evening, as usual.
We will be back in the not too distant future.
Amazing food and amazing place and staff, loved it 🙂
Starter and main course both a plate full of peas. Lamb main course was a full portion cut in half and not enough for a main dish.
The chocolate desert was a mixture of small chocolate flavoured domes with an ice cream all of which was melting fAST !!
Generally a very poor lunch with very expensive wine list !!
Pleasant restaurant situated in a Surrey village. Restaurant parking. Not too crowded. Tasty food. Attentive staff.
A very high standard of cooking, friendly service and excellent value for the lunch menu. Looking forward to visiting again soon.
Went on a Tuesday evening, so quite a quiet night. Staff were very friendly and chatty, food was amazing , wine delicious and lots to choose from. Have already booked to go again.
Had lunch here Saturday. Nice warm greeting and friendly staff. Enjoyed my meal, braised beef with bone marrow and octopus, nicely presented and tasty. Will be return to this fine restaurant soon.
