We were slightly disappointed in the desserts, and on one occasion when we needed to contact the waiting staff there was none to be seen for some time.
That said, we will be back, seriously top notch.
We have visited Stovell's on many occasions for lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. The menu is always imaginative, the food superb and the service first class. We only wished we lived nearer so we could visit more often.
Not our first visit, we took my mother for a 70th birthday treat. In short she loved it, from the pre-lunch champagne cocktail, the food was fantastic as always, and the birthday plate and truffles rounded off a fantastic long relaxed lunch. The chocolate dessert was a huge hit, she couldn't help but 'discreetly' clean the bowl getting every last ounce out with her finger!!
Thoroughly enjoyed a very special occasion here. Was a real treat.
Not to the same standards as before
I had booked a table for my fiancé’s birthday a month or so before. I had been to the restaurant before but I wasn’t as impressed with the overall experience. I throughly enjoy tasting menus especially when paired with wines so I was disappointed to discover on the night that the Taste of Mexico was not on offer.
The decor and the furnishings in the restaurant are lovely but the overall ambience was lacking. The staff seemed rushed which effected the atmosphere for me.
I maybe expecting too much but it has been a while since I’ve had to top up my own wine in a restaurant. I think it’s a nice touch and was surprised this wasn’t a thing at Stovells.
I had noted some dietary requirements on the booking but there was no mention of this on the night so either the items noted are not present in any dishes (unlikely) or they hadn’t noted my comments.
The food we had was lovely but for the price I thought the overall experience could be better.
There was a time I raved about Stovell's, telling friends they must go.Alas, that has radically changed.A restaurant that once aspired to Michelin standards has, it would seem, "given up".
1.Smoke filled bar area from the open fire made it unusable.Usually we would sit here & enjoy their homemade gin but it was so smoke filled I started to cough within minutes & we went immediately to dining area (they lost out on a few gin sales!).
2.Waitress spilled a full glass of Prosecco over my partner.Whilst not an issue in itself,these things happen, we took it well, the staff should have been more “involved” in moving us to the other table, instead we had to do it ourselves, bring our glasses, mop up the prosecco, etc.
3. I had to swap my chair, the one at the new table had a collapsed seat & I just sunk in it rather than the bouncy effect of my previous seat.Again I had to do this myself. The "broken" seat was not discarded but placed under our previous table,presumably for another guest to experience the delights of a "sinking bottom".
4.Lunch Menu selection was very limited. We're still not sure if A la Carte was an option or not, we were just handed the lunch set menu and that was that.
5.My partner's starter, mackerel, was nice. My starter, the pigeon terrine was dry, dry, dry, & crumbly. Only a smidgen of chutney on the side to whet the palate-disappointing.
6.My partner's main, "Buttery Cod", was served in a bowl which made it difficult to eat (he found it odd they did that for a flaky fish). And it was more watery than buttery. My main "Bone Marrow" was just meat in a bone with lashings of parsley leaves over it.No vegetables with any mains-why? No options to order.
7.Choc tarte, not memorable.
8.Service less attentive than other (non fine dining) restaurants!
I asked at bar had there been significant changes,e.g. chef change, as it felt it had lost its way..he replied it was same chef for past 15 yrs. Odd given Stovell's opened in 2012!! Oh dear...
I was mislead into believing this was a Mexican food restaurant. The staff were very good but not communicating with us or each other. Lovely venue but chilly. Horribly expensive with minute portions.
I have visited Stovells a number of timeS over the years and look forward to great food and excellent service. Unfortunately the service was nowhere near it’s usual standard on my most recent visit. There was no one to greet us on arrival. Eventually a barman arrived who looked confused about his role in checking us in. No one offered to take our coats and we had to wait a while for a drinks menu. The barman was also really quite scruffily dressed.
Eventually we were taken through and someone offered to take our coats.
At this point things picked up. The food as ever was excellent and our waiter was great. Unfortunately right at the end I waited a very long time for any dessert. On arrival it was different to what I had ordered. The explanation was that the other waiter had forgotten to tell me. If they knew I’d ordered someone else, why not apologise immediately rather than just hope I would be happy with a different dessert? Before leaving no one brought back my coat. I had to go and find it myself as no staff were available to assist.
The service and food were really good. We had cote de beouf which was excellent. The deal to bring our own wine was a brilliant idea especially as the wine list looked quite pricey. The food on the other hand was very good value.
Lovely restaurant and amazing food. Highly recommend.
A quiet Saturday lunch time. An experience to savour on special occasions. The low key "Happy birthday" offering was in keeping with how my husband celebrates.
The food was really nice and high quality. However the starter (scallops) were on the low side in terms of proportion (only 2! And you pay an extra). The service was not up to the quality of the food. We had been told to leave our coats on the chair in the bar area and it was therefore not easy to get them back (gave me 2 different ones before I had to go myself). The bill was wrong and we had asked for more bread which never came. It is a shame as service is so important when you are in that category of restaurant. The food though was very nice and refined.
Nice restaurant, good food, and very friendly staff but not what we expected.
-The deer, scallops, halibut, beef wellington, and chocolate mouse were all great
-Tasting menu was not available. They should mention this on their website or when you book. We came specially to have the Taste of Mexico menu. The only alternative is a 3 courses a la carte menu for 50 GBP + supplements (+3 for scallops and +10 for beef wellington) which is expensive.
-Wine list was not as advertised on their website. Probably only 25% of the wines were available. This is due to them changing supplier.
-We were given an amuse bouche but weren't told what it was so had to ask.
Maybe we'll return once the chef is back from his trip to Mexico.
Great service, the chef put on a special tasting menu and wine paring for us, he delivered each course with an explanation and the food was exquisite. Wine paring was perfect and whole experience was a pleasure. Price was very reasonable too. Many thanks
Very good foods and services. Price for ala carte menu has gone up to £50 for 3 courses and no pre dessert. I would really love to get petite four with the coffee or tea, especially when the price is £5.50
Excellent food and service. Very innovative and good value - wines rather overpriced however. Very quiet (2 tables only) at lunchtime.
Food was overpriced for what was delivered unfortunately, and just not worth the money. Unfortunately, the desert was terrible and I left it largely untouched. If you are looking for a special evening / restaurant experience, then I would consider alternatives.
I recently wrote Stovell's was probably the best value restaurant in Chobham giving it 5 stars in each category. Our most recent dining experience was unfortunately not the best. The table service needs substantial improvement and and food was certainly not up to the normally high standard.
The food was good but service let down the whole experience. We were sat in a quarter full restaurant next to a noisy table. The waiter spoke poor English and did not attend to us as expected in fine dining restaurant. Will not be returning due to poor service.
This was our third year to Stovell's and the difference in food and service were noticeably different. We will not be continuing our tradition, it used to be a real treat that we looked forward to, but the cost is no longer comparable to a great evening.
Very delicious food, but was disappointed to find out the Taste if Mexico menu was not available. The service was sincere, but a little clumsy and intrusive. Wonderful ambience. We’ll definitely come back.
Sadly Stovells was not up to scratch on this visit. The service was very slow and very low grade (despite it not being busy). The food was generally ok to good but overpriced for what it was. The wine list was depleted which could have meant that you were pushed up severely in price brackets purely due to out of stocks. It’s a shame as it’s such a lovely restaurant and setting - it was also cold in the bar despite the opportunity on a chilly Christmas Eve for the beautiful fire to have been lit.
Poor service, inexperienced staff.

Tasty food but the sunday service was not very polished.
We have had some lovely meals at this restaurant since it opened, but were very disappointed with our last visit. The food was still excellent, although we were very disappointed to find that the only menu option was a "Christmas Menu", so no Tasting Menu or any of the lovely "specials" that are normally on the menu. We were celebrating my husband's birthday, not Christmas, so the restricted choice on the menu was really disappointing. The service was not up to its normal standard and I had to ask for my chair to be changed because the seat was so badly worn out that it was like sitting on a plank of wood. The wine list was also very disappointing, and also very expensive! It will be some time before we go back especially for a special celebration.
I have been to Stovell’s many times, but not very recently. My brother and I visited on Tuesday evening and were very taken aback by the wine list, more specifically the red wines. We were horrified that there was only one bottle under £85 and that was £45. The waiter did find us a bottle at £65, and although nice it was just a fairly ordinary wine. I really think you should offer a wider range of red wines, and if not possible, then at least a house wine at a more reasonable price - hence my three stars, and I wouldn’t recommend to a friend at the moment.

Birthday dinner - fantastic food let down by poor service
Eaten at Stovells for about 4 years, but this was the worst, very disappointed. No Barman, only seemed to be 3 waiting staff, got my very cold coffee before my sweet arrived.
Probably the best restaurant in Chobham for food and value.
Our table for 5 was squashed onto a table for 4 with no room. The staff seemed to be untrained for the type of restaurant it is supposed to be. The food was ok but nothing special. The choice on the menu was very limited, particularly for our tables taste. We were there less than 2 hours when we were asked to take our drinks to the bar as they needed our table. Generally for £86 / head it was a very disappointing evening.
We ate at lunch time, therefore we expected it to be quite and would look for more atmosphere in the evenings. Our waiter requires more training i.e. leaning across and cutlery not in the correct place setting, The Food however is great and worth a visit
We were a group of six and all enjoyed a lovely meal.
Very disappointing. Having dined here 3-4 years ago no longer anywhere near as slick as it once was. Not greeted well on arrival Maitre D’ appeared put out and stressed. Food very average and a black charred pile of crumbs on plate with desert unidentifiable. When asked what it was Maitre D said would check. In the past would have been a conversation prior to eating informing what was on the plate. Didn’t come back so asked again. Went off huffy then said it was salted caramel! Zero taste! Ash! Tarts Tatum dry. Potatoes roared very very average! Maitre d kept running looking v stressed. Restaurant was not busy. French waiter very friendly then maitre d loomed behind him and he walked away. Had run out of their special home made gin. Would NOT recommend.
Unfortunately what was supposed to be a quality meal night out with the family it turned out to be a total disappointment...service was inattentive, food was tasteless (cote de boef for two) dry, no seasoning and cold., full of fat properly tasteless, careless prepared meal. Waited for 50minutes between starters and main course. Spoke to manager on the night and gave him feedback but don’t think it made any difference or he really cared. Final bill was just over £300 fot three including drinks . We don’t mind spending money when it’s worth it, my husband usually takes his clients and his office colleagues for dinner to Stovells. Unfortunately we lost total confidence in the quality of this restaurant and will definitely not be going back.
We have dined at Stovells on a number of occasions and have never been disappointed. Had the excellent 2 for 1 lunch deal and food was of a good quality. Staff always pleasant.
Excellent food , attentive and friendly service and relaxed ambience.
On arrival the bar seemed a bit disjointed - no draft beer and an apple martini was confusing.
Restaurant was lovely - starter while nice was unmemorable, Cote de Boeuf lovely as was the wine.
Overall it seems to have lost some of the sparkle.
