This was an expensive mistake. Stovells were highly recommended to me. I booked 6 weeks in advance as a surprise anniversary present for my husband. Our experience was dreadful. We booked for 7.45. We had to ask twice to be shown to our table at 8.15. We had our starter at 9.15! And then we were given the wrong ones ! It was 10pm by the time we had our main. We had to ask each time for drink top ups. I requested more water for the table twice
Fine dining? I don’t think so.
Amazing food and service! Waiters very friendly!
Very cosy and amazing ambiance.
Excellent food and friendly attentive service. Menu de Jour was excellent value.
We love this restaurant! Beautiful food and charming place.
Disappointed, food excellent but service lacking, very difficult to engage with staff, generally disinterested. Requested bill three times, card payment machine twice. Wine list extensive but prices tend to be high, there should be a greater price range, we went for the superb food , not fine and expensive wines. Fully appreciate why so many emails are received offering “deals” , focus on the service to attract customers .
A most pleasant lunch excellent plate de jour with exceptional service will go back.
Had a lovely lunch. Each course was very tasty. Staff very nice - attentive but not overbearing.
Excellent value - had the Menu du Jour two for one offer - couldn't fault anything.
My wife and I went to Stovells to celebrate my birthday with two friends visiting from Australia. We eat at Stovells reasonably regularly, perhaps 2-3 times a year over the past 6 years or so and it’s a favourite of my wife and I, the real “go to” restaurant for a celebration. We ate on a Tuesday evening so the restaurant was quieter than normal, about 14 diners including us. The welcome was friendly and efficient, there were only two staff working front of house.
The ambience of the restaurant is excellent, timeless. The food as ever was the star, with one exception from my viewpoint. We had two excellent bottles of wine, both Viogniers, one from Argentina which was crisp and astringent. The Australian wine from the Beechworth Estate was outstanding, really delicious and powerful. Not cheap at £80, but really good example of an Aussie Viognier. I was slightly disappointed to be informed by the head waiter that the BYO deal was still on on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, it isn’t mentioned on the website. However, no complaints about the wines we had.
Our crab starter was magnificent absolutely delicious. The dill dressing was off the scale, such a fresh flavour. The mains were terrific, my wife described her halibut as meaty and juicy with a delicious sauce. I ate the roast veal sweetbreads and lentils - Wow! Rich and lemony, really gorgeous. Our friends had the Côte de Porc which they also said was delicious, both bones were well chewed!!
The only disappointment for me was the Chocolate Dessert. The mousse was piped in small pieces around a large circular bowl, which had a very textured pattern. This made the mousse difficult to lift off the plate with a spoon. The lavender ice cream was a small quenelle, with no discernible lavender flavour.
All in all though an excellent meal, Stovells delivered for us again.
The food tastes fantastic and overall, isn’t bad value for the quality of food and service provided. My only real negative is that despite emailing and phoning ahead to check the options available to me considering some allergen foods I wanna avoiding, I was left disappointed. I was told that it wouldn’t be a problem to avoid dairy and soya, but was not told that the majority of the menu would be excluded from my choices as a result. I assumed that, considering the standard, the dishes could be adapted. I had to watch my partner eat much more food than me as I couldn’t eat much and left hungry. Having been before a few times, this was by far the worst visit. I would have liked to have been given more info regarding what foods would have been available so I could have pre orders what I’d like without the allergens. That being said, the wine was excellent and the sommelier outstanding .
This was our 4th visit to Stovells and once again the service and meal was outstanding living up to expectations.
We had a nice and quiet Thursday lunch at Stovells. It wasn’t our first time and won’t be our last either. We are always very happy with the service and food. Thank you for an enjoyable lunch.
A great venue with very welcoming and helpful staff. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Wonderful food in a beautiful setting. A lovely birthday treat for my other half. We're even thinking of coming back on our wedding day!
We have been to Stovells before. When it first opened the food and service was excellent. Sadly this is no longer the case.
We thought we would try again as there had been changes made with the menu and decor.
The menu has certainly not changed for the better.
I had the duck pate to start, which was a very wet slimy texture, The butter's provided for the bread were in my opinion margarine and most certainly not butter.
For my main I had the beef wellington this was my best course of the meal but the minuscule amount of mash I felt let this dish down, I personally would be ashamed to serve such a small amount, and lets be honest potatoes are not expensive.
As for dessert I chose the chocolate mousse, I could not believe what I was served. The chocolate mousse was piped in 4-5 minuscule rosettes on the plate with a scoop of ice cream in the centre. The portion size was a joke.
My Sister and her Hubby had the cote du beef which was served with half a lettuce and chips.
We noticed that the restaurant is not as busy as it used to be which I feel is such a shame. It goes to show we are not alone in our opinion of the restaurant.
Excellent service, but rather lack lustre cooking. Generally over-seasoned.
Excellent service. Wine rather more expensive than other restaurants. Our bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc was fairly ordinary but £50 a bottle. Starter and dessert were very good. The main of crab ravioli in consume was quite tasteless. I would not have know this was crab if tasted blind. Generally a pleasant lunch. Would try again.
Could not fault anything. The service was excellent, with just the right amount of interaction. The food was, as expected, faultless. Friendly staff, excellent food and comfortable surroundings, what more could you ask.
This was our first visit for some time as our previous visit had been disappointing. We were with a couple of foodie friends as our treat for their golden wedding anniversary.
We were surprised and upset when the starter my friend ordered had run out. A 1.30pm booking for Sunday lunch is not unduly late so I would have expected all choices to be available, especially on a relatively small menu.
In general, our food was very good with an enormous portion of beef and well cooked vegetables. Three of us had the chocolate dessert, which was excellent but again, my friend was disappointed with her choice of the berries and summer pudding which she said was dry and more like a doughnut than a summer pudding.
Overall the service was better than our last visit but I still feel Stovells need the concentrate on the customer more. The lack of a desired starter and the dry dessert were met with pleasant apologies but I felt no real attachment of any importance to the shortcomings.
We were pleased to meet the new Maitre and we hope under his influence, the front of house will begin to shine.
We went for my birthday lunch on a Sunday. Lovely food, beautifully presented. Service struck exactly the right balance between friendly and unobtrusive. Would highly recommend.
Wonderful evening, as usual.
We will be back in the not too distant future.
Amazing food and amazing place and staff, loved it 🙂
Starter and main course both a plate full of peas. Lamb main course was a full portion cut in half and not enough for a main dish.
The chocolate desert was a mixture of small chocolate flavoured domes with an ice cream all of which was melting fAST !!
Generally a very poor lunch with very expensive wine list !!
Pleasant restaurant situated in a Surrey village. Restaurant parking. Not too crowded. Tasty food. Attentive staff.
A very high standard of cooking, friendly service and excellent value for the lunch menu. Looking forward to visiting again soon.
Went on a Tuesday evening, so quite a quiet night. Staff were very friendly and chatty, food was amazing , wine delicious and lots to choose from. Have already booked to go again.
Had lunch here Saturday. Nice warm greeting and friendly staff. Enjoyed my meal, braised beef with bone marrow and octopus, nicely presented and tasty. Will be return to this fine restaurant soon.
Four of us dined at Stovells last Tuesday, where we chose the Mexican tasting menu. The food was delicious, with subtle flavours, and if anything over-large servings. We all had different favourite dishes ... I loved the beef broth, and the cod dish. The waiters were very attentive charming young men. I can wholeheartedly recommend the restaurant for a special celebratory meal.
Excellent food and service in a great setting - will definitely return!
Menu selection is just right with not too much if too little choice and all tastes catered for. Wine selection excellent whether by the glass or bottle.
Barman was not welcoming in the slightest and when we asked what gin was available, he just stood aside and pointed at the selection. No mention of the house gin we later found out they apparently distill there, which might have been nice to try!! We made our selection and asked for lime. We were then told that particular gin should be served with lemon. Oops. Our mistake no doubt! A waiter came to take us to our table a few minutes after our friends arrived, so we asked if we could finish our drinks in the bar. He was visibly annoyed and looked at his watch before walking off. Another older waiter was absolutely lovely throughout the whole evening but other than him, we didn’t really enjoy what was otherwise inconsistent service. Ordered cote de beouf for two and it was supposed to come with duck fat potatoes, which didn’t appear and when we asked about them, they brought out some chips. The interior is intentionally stripped back so the focus is on the food, which was fine but didn’t seem to bear much resemblance to what was described on the menu. We left feeling a bit disappointed.
Service was very slow, table booked for 745pm and we didn’t get our main course until 1015pm, no apologies and they didn’t seem to be worried or aware of it. Didn’t get asked if we wanted more drinks when our glasses were empty, we had to ask. Food was nice but not as flavoursome as I’d expect for this type of restaurant. Not sure I will return.
Went for a birthday celebration. Beautiful restaurant, beautiful food. Would highly recommend this place for a special occasion.
Fabulous food, wonderful wines and relaxed charming atmosphere.
We have been coming to Stovells for years as a special treat but what we encountered on Thursday evening was so disappointing. The service was awful considering there was only 3 tables, the food was less than average and didn’t meet expectations or was even accurate what the menu said. The sides were so small - honestly it was a joke and we had to order more half way through the meal? The wine list is now so small and we were often left for ages waiting for a top up and ordering more drinks took forever. We have to believe there has been a change in management or something has gone terribly wrong. We won’t be back as it was an expensive evening for a less than average experience.
Lovely food, well presented and carefully served. Even a roast dinner is special. Highly recommended.
Very disappointed-last time we visited was 18 months ago and we thought then that it was not as good as it used to be.This time was very poor -the food was fairly tasteless especially the watery turbot and also my son’s deconstructed Beef Wellington . The desserts were equally disappointing. The ambiance and service was lacking compared to a few years ago .We shall not return .I cannot understand how it retains its 3 AA rosettes; no comparison in quality to the last 3 AA rosetted restaurant we visited in Leamington Spa
Unfortunately we found ourselves being the only people at the restaurant for lunch, so no real atmosphere. However food was good and service very friendly without being obtrusive.
Firstly we have eaten in a few Michelin restaurants . I know this is not a Michelin restaurant, but it charges as though it is, yet is way short of the mark on quality. Beef Wellington is not a fillet ( as tasty as it was) on top of some puffed pastry, it should be wrapped with a layer of Pate between. The quail starter was excellent though, but my wife’s scallops were awful , way over cooked and tough rubbery texture, and a very vinegary to tough to cut accompanying vegetable, that was not at all pleasant.
I have a fairly good knowledge of wine, and a £7.00 quid bottle of Cote de Rhône at £48.00 is just ridiculous.
Can’t understand where all the 5* reviews are from, I must have missed something , definitely won’t be back, this place thinks it’s something it’s not.
Also they said they had had removed the surcharge on the Scallops, but on later inspection, they hadn’t.
Excellent food, very well presented. Such a pity we couldn't taste the tasting menu
Superb food and service. Simple environment - the focus is on the food.
