Excellent meal for two. Spent about 2 hours here and the time flew by with amazing service and food. Easily one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had.
Ambitious agenda and many small pleasant and tasty surprises but they really need to review their butcher supply. The Duck Breast was very tough although not over cooked but the quality of the actual meat was very hard. The Rib Beef (Cote du Buef) exceptionally fatty.
We stayed within the set menu. Really good value and perfect environment.
Previously had excellent meals every time , last 3 rd November for special occasion Sunday Lunch , think the staff were new or the restaurant has changed hands, they don’t offer pre drink at bar( no staff) they did not understand Rose Champagne to Rose Wine !
The could not find the Rose Champagne we ordered , the starter menu item stated Hot ! Cold and dry Hard Salmon , the desert Cheesecake with pineapple ! Came with orange , the head manager and filthy dirty hands and nails serving plates of food ,
Massive shame was such a good restaurant
Went for a birthday and date night. Lovely food and great service in relaxed environment
I have been to a Stovells a couple of times before and loved the ambience, service and food. Last Friday we had the tasting menu and wine flight and I was less impressed. It was a busy eve and I felt the waiters were rushed and not providing much information about the wine and food. I was not offered gluten free bread when I said I was intolerant and wouldn’t eat the bread provided. I wouldn’t do the tasting menu again as there were several dishes I did not enjoy but I would happily go back to Stovells for a meal where I chose what to eat and drink.
Having thoroughly enjoyed our two "Two for One" lunches in August, we were really looking forward to our third one on 01 November, so much so that I researched the wine list the night before, picking out the bottle of Patagonian Casa Silva Sauvignon Blanc that I wished to order. That was when the catalogue of disappointing factors started. 1. The wine list had changed, with not even my second option available. 2. The wine I chose eventually from the list wasn't available. 3. The two glasses of French Sauvignon Blanc that we finally ordered arrived late, some minutes after we had been served with our first course - wine arriving after the first course is unacceptable. 4. The hake main course was unavailable, so the hake replaced by cod. 5. Normally Stovells provides a nice basket of bread before the first course is served. My wife had to request bread to accompany the terrine, which delayed her enjoyment of the meal further. 6. The soft smoked salmon was frankly rather chewy. 7. No-one asked if we wanted more water in the course of the meal. 8. The bill included the more expensive Viognier wine instead of the French Sauvignon Blanc that we had requested. I was very disappointed and will most likely cancel my December birthday lunch!
Food excellent. Service OK. Overall experience disappointing. Very expensive for what it is.
At nit even 8pm we were only offered the a la carte menu and had to ask for the tasting menu. Not given a wine list so had to ask for the wines to match the menu (as seen on the website). At the end of the meal no coffee was offered and the lights in the bar had been switched off so it was difficult to find our coats which were on a peg just outside the toilets. Got the impression they just wanted to be rid of us. For this price not good enough.
Would happily eat this chef’s food again but he’s not running a great restaurant. They’re pricing as though they have a Michelin star but unless they sort out the overall experience they’re never going to get one.
Used to eat here regularly for special occasions but although the food is delicious we won’t be rushing back.
Lovely food and a well designed menu. There was a function upstairs which probably caused the restaurant staff to be a bit overstretched. Courteous and effective if a little slow. However, that said, lunch at Stovells is always a pleasure and this was no exception.
My previous experience at Stovell was excellent, however this time it was more than lacking.
We were celebrating my youngest son’s 21st ( which I had mentioned in your online booking) that was not even acknowledged.
We were served our 1st course with all the amuse bouche plates etc still on the table- nothing was cleared away. Plates were pushed asides to make room and then removed.
The boys were served well before my daughter and myself and so had to wait for our courses to come so we could all start together.
We had to ask for wine to be poured on more than one occasion.
The food was definitely nowhere near as good as our previous experience .
I could not recommend Stovells after this visit
Taste of Mexico was amazing! Was pretty noisy once a big group of people came in, but apart from that the experience was great. Lovely staff and environment. Very tasteful!
Delicious food, good and friendly service. One of our party had food intolerances, which were understood and discussed but there was one slip up where a dish had to be replaced.
We had dinner last night for my daughters birthday and have to say it was not as good as normal.
It was very cold, I did mention this to the waiter and he said that they were closed on the Monday, so the heating had not been on ! To eat in a cold room is not pleasant.
The food was good, but not amazing and all the times I have been before, its been amazing, so I am sorry to say a little disappointed.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere, very good friendly knowledgeable staff.
My husband and I had a splendid lunch on Saturday 19th August. Food was very good and so was the service.
Service was a bit slow on our visit. Constant flickering lights very annoying and spoilt ambience.
Food ordered was fabulous, two items not available on the starter menu which was disappointing.
Wine ordered was full of sediment which was not the their fault but again left us feeling underwhelmed.
The food was faultless - generous autumnal pre-starter selection followed by Foie Gras, Cote De Boeuf and Chocolate pud. Lovely space, simultaneousy cosy & classy. Service was a little slow / inattentive and lacked a sommelier / confident explanation of each course but overall a great date night out.
Perfect blend between English charm en quality food, highly recommended !
We have had many fantastic meals and excellent service previously, normally 5 star. This time however I have to say the whole experience with the exception of the food which as always was 5 star, was extremely disappointing. When we first walked through the door we were waiting over 5 minutes before anyone came to greet us. The table was right next to the speaker to this was not ideal. The service was average compared to normal simple thing like apart from the first glass of wine I had to pour our own for the duration of the meal.
The positive was that your marketing worked very well with regards to the 2 for 1 offer as we originally had no intention of eating out last Friday but when I received the email we booked straight away but the only table available was 21:30.
I presume this will be a one off experience and will not stop us eating here again as we normally have a beautiful experience and always love your food.
I would not put this one disappointing experience on social media as it does not reflect the many previous enjoyable evenings we have enjoyed.
I am pleased that you requested feedback and I'm always interested to see if someone takes time to read them. I guess I will find out should someone care to contact me via email

We ate early, so it was very cosy with just us in the restaurant. Food excellent and as they say, reassuringly expensive! Will definitely go again.
It was great experience! We were party of 4, very fortunate to booked a table at a very last minute. Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable - I’m dairy free, and it wasn’t an issue. Everyone including me enjoyed food very much.
I took my partner to Stovells for a birthday meal because we wanted to spend a night out of London and the Mexican taster menu looked interesting.
I lost track of how many dishes there were, and the presentation throughout was excellent but unfortunately a number of dishes failed to deliver on flavour.
With Mexican food, I expect a real punch or chilli, garlic and lime but this did not come through in enough dishes. I appreciate that everyone has a different heat tolerance but this could have been combatted by having a little dish of chilli sauce alongside the food, for guests to add at their own discretion, as you would find in any Mexican eatery.
The food was all cooked perfectly; the sea bass and quail were tender and succulent, there just wasn’t enough of the Mexico with either dish.
Usually, when I am eating a taster menu, I find myself wishing there were more of certain dishes, but in this case some of the dishes could have been scaled down in size. There were too many carbs through the meal, to the point where my partner could hardly eat the final
dessert course. We noticed that the ‘Pinata’ dessert we were served was the same as that being given to a la Carte diners. It was a great dessert but it was a lot to get through as a trio of desserts.
Although I felt that many of the dishes could be improved, the food was generally good and I can’t fault the effort that must have gone into preparing the meal but if you are charging £75 a head, you are in Michelin star territory and the quality of the meal did not justify the price tag.
I would not recommend the taster menu but the a la carte looked interesting and decent value.
Never fails to deliver on all levels of service, food quality and value.
the food was lovely, topped off by an incredible melt in the mouth tart tatin, the 3 course lunch menu for 28 pound was an absolute bargain. the restaurant is lovely, in an old inn with open fires etc. the ambience is smart but relaxed and the service was exceptional. we loved it. Ill be coming back for the 10 course mexican taster menu that we saw other diners eating.
4th visit. Food is good although menu is pretty static despite saying it is constantly changing. Service was lacking and seemed inexperienced: Barman had poor English and would not give me drinks menu, eventually waiter provided one and commented that it would take a while as we ordered 4 cocktails. During the meal waiters were fine but nothing more than food carriers - no introduction or explanation of food or even checking that everything ok. Not worth the 12.5% auto added. Restaurant lacked atmosphere. Not sure I will be rushing back.
Warm welcome and delicious food. Only minor moan was very expressive coffee with one small petit fours.
Delicious food, excellent presented. Wide range of wines and cocktails on the menu too.
Beautifully simple restaurant and the service was of a high standard.
Would go back again without a doubt
Sunday Lunch - Wonderful meal at this lovely 16th century inn restaurant. Sublime food - so rare for a Sunday lunch fixed menu. A little quieter than I recall and waiter/manager was not quite as engaging as I remember but such a brilliant culinary dining experience more than made up for it.
As outstanding as always. The pork terrine was delicious, the lamb simply melted in the mouth. Cannot recommend enough.
This was an expensive mistake. Stovells were highly recommended to me. I booked 6 weeks in advance as a surprise anniversary present for my husband. Our experience was dreadful. We booked for 7.45. We had to ask twice to be shown to our table at 8.15. We had our starter at 9.15! And then we were given the wrong ones ! It was 10pm by the time we had our main. We had to ask each time for drink top ups. I requested more water for the table twice
Fine dining? I don’t think so.
Amazing food and service! Waiters very friendly!
Very cosy and amazing ambiance.
Excellent food and friendly attentive service. Menu de Jour was excellent value.
We love this restaurant! Beautiful food and charming place.
Disappointed, food excellent but service lacking, very difficult to engage with staff, generally disinterested. Requested bill three times, card payment machine twice. Wine list extensive but prices tend to be high, there should be a greater price range, we went for the superb food , not fine and expensive wines. Fully appreciate why so many emails are received offering “deals” , focus on the service to attract customers .
A most pleasant lunch excellent plate de jour with exceptional service will go back.
Had a lovely lunch. Each course was very tasty. Staff very nice - attentive but not overbearing.
Excellent value - had the Menu du Jour two for one offer - couldn't fault anything.
My wife and I went to Stovells to celebrate my birthday with two friends visiting from Australia. We eat at Stovells reasonably regularly, perhaps 2-3 times a year over the past 6 years or so and it’s a favourite of my wife and I, the real “go to” restaurant for a celebration. We ate on a Tuesday evening so the restaurant was quieter than normal, about 14 diners including us. The welcome was friendly and efficient, there were only two staff working front of house.
The ambience of the restaurant is excellent, timeless. The food as ever was the star, with one exception from my viewpoint. We had two excellent bottles of wine, both Viogniers, one from Argentina which was crisp and astringent. The Australian wine from the Beechworth Estate was outstanding, really delicious and powerful. Not cheap at £80, but really good example of an Aussie Viognier. I was slightly disappointed to be informed by the head waiter that the BYO deal was still on on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, it isn’t mentioned on the website. However, no complaints about the wines we had.
Our crab starter was magnificent absolutely delicious. The dill dressing was off the scale, such a fresh flavour. The mains were terrific, my wife described her halibut as meaty and juicy with a delicious sauce. I ate the roast veal sweetbreads and lentils - Wow! Rich and lemony, really gorgeous. Our friends had the Côte de Porc which they also said was delicious, both bones were well chewed!!
The only disappointment for me was the Chocolate Dessert. The mousse was piped in small pieces around a large circular bowl, which had a very textured pattern. This made the mousse difficult to lift off the plate with a spoon. The lavender ice cream was a small quenelle, with no discernible lavender flavour.
All in all though an excellent meal, Stovells delivered for us again.
The food tastes fantastic and overall, isn’t bad value for the quality of food and service provided. My only real negative is that despite emailing and phoning ahead to check the options available to me considering some allergen foods I wanna avoiding, I was left disappointed. I was told that it wouldn’t be a problem to avoid dairy and soya, but was not told that the majority of the menu would be excluded from my choices as a result. I assumed that, considering the standard, the dishes could be adapted. I had to watch my partner eat much more food than me as I couldn’t eat much and left hungry. Having been before a few times, this was by far the worst visit. I would have liked to have been given more info regarding what foods would have been available so I could have pre orders what I’d like without the allergens. That being said, the wine was excellent and the sommelier outstanding .
This was our 4th visit to Stovells and once again the service and meal was outstanding living up to expectations.
We had a nice and quiet Thursday lunch at Stovells. It wasn’t our first time and won’t be our last either. We are always very happy with the service and food. Thank you for an enjoyable lunch.
