Still good, but not to previous standards. Initial welcome was poor with surprise that we wished to enjoy a drink in the bar area first, and then being told we only had 10 minutes as we MUST be seated by our table time.
Menu more limited than in the past and all the little touches were missing. I guess they have put on hold or cancelled their aspiration to win a Michelin star?
Service was excellent
Food was incredibly well presented and well explained.
Delightful surroundings, excellent food, and superb choice of wines.
It is all a matter of taste, but i was not blown away by the Mexican menu. It started with a sweet appetizer which for me has a dessert flavour. The various dishes were just not on point for me in terms of taste. The highlights were the fish (really good) and dessert (great presentation). The quail was very difficult to eat and was hoping the meat to fall off the bones a bit more.
I will be back because service is great, the setting is nice and there is lots more on the menu to choose from
The level of service and the food was good. I will return to Stovells.
Atrocious, food, service and value for money. We waited 20 mins before being offered any drinks. Food mediocre, vegetarian options limited. Only one option on main and that was roasted veg in a cream sauce. The side dish of veg had more flavour. We were never offered any further drinks - glasses and bottled water sat empty for most of the meal. Had to ask for the bill three times and wait a further 20 mins.
A group of 4 for the Taste of Mexico.
Best meal so far this year! A wonderful evening with friends and great food.
Was recommended by Coworth Park hotel where we were staying. Excellent food. Staff really friendly and competent. Superb experience
Great to be back here eating wonderful food again!
Went for tasting menu and pairing, but it was not made clear that wine was only paired with some of the courses.
There was no explanation of the wine, it was just poured.
They forgot about one of the pairings, and so they gave it to us with the sorbet, even after I had asked when the next wine was served… unacceptable.
They did not ask about pre-dinner drinks, and then took ages with the pre-dinner cocktails, but then did not wait for us to finish the cocktails, so they just got warm throughout the meal.
The food was mediocre, but worse than some London Mexican places which are much cheaper.
Worst of all, in these days of elevated hygiene as we reopen, the staff picked up cutlery from our table that - although we may not have used - added it to the clean cutlery and laid on a new table!!!
Will not return.
Firstly, the menu on open table is incorrect, for Sunday lunch there is no fixed price menu so don't be fooled by that. While the food was nice, it was the most meagre portions we've ever received for such a price. £28 for a tiny portion of monkfish and £30 for one tiny piece of lamb and half a sweetbread with 3 Asparagus. Find dining is one thing but this was too much of a joke. Absolutely shocking value for money, left wanting a real meal after the tiny portion of food.
Once again excellent.Intimate, super acoustics and lighting great service. Low ceilings not an issue for me
We have been to Stovells many times over the past 6 years and unfortunately, the restaurant isn’t what it was. Last night we had a table booked for 830 and arrived at 8 for a drink in the bar. The bar itself was covered in used glasses and the barman looked very frazzled. However, we were served our drinks quite quickly. We finally got shown to our table at 9. It was immediately apparent that all was not well in the restaurant; there were not enough waiting staff and tables were waiting for well over an hour for starters to arrive. One table complained about the portion size (which was meagre) and were asked to leave (although I believe one of the party had been rude to the waiter) and another walked out before ordering because they could see the food was taking an age to arrive. A disgruntled air permeated the room.
When our starters (a crab risotto) finally arrived after 10 they were tasty but the portion was tiny. The main arrived at 11 and again, I was shocked at the size: my monkfish was a piece no more than 5 cm for £28!!! My husband had lamb and it was also tiny and came with one asparagus spear. The food tasted good but the portion size really let it down. For the price, you expect to come away full and we were anything but. We didn’t bother with dessert because of the time.
In addition, all the little extras that used to make this place special have gone. You used to get different types of bread with different sides (smoked butter, chilli sauce, dripping) with a tapioca crisp and an amuse bouche between courses; that has gone (although we were given a tasty but lukewarm pea soup shot).
All in all, a very disappointing experience. I suspect we will not be going back.
Date in the sheltered area. Great food and service in awful weather
Fantastic evening out with friends. Attentive friendly service and beautiful food.
It was our first time out since lockdown. The food was very good, apart from the chips which was disappointing for a restaurant of this quality. Waitress was very charming.
Overall very good, but a little pricey.
Considering we sat on the edge of the car park- not their fault- blame Covid- the food and service were faultless. Inventive and accomplished food (the crab risotto and the lamb starred), very good wines and wonderful service made for a great experience. Thanks to all the team.
Had a very special Birthday Dinner at Stovell's this week. COVID restrictions still in place so dined outside on terrace. Was a little chilly, but blankets and the right clothing sorted that issue.
The bellini was excellent according to my wife as was the smoky margarita that I had, bartender did a great job. Service was to the usual standard fantasic well done to Marianna and the wine guy (sorry didn't get your name, will get it next time).
Spring Menu was amazing, starters through to desserts. I especially enjoyed the wellington and sweetcorn creme brulee.
Will be going again, even if we still have to eat outside.
Brilliant evening, the food was amazing but the service was spectacular. Well definitely be returning
The food and service remains superb. It is a bit chilly outside of an evening, but hopefully that is a short term problem. Have rebooked for my next visit.
It’s a pricy restaurant. Some of the dishes are outstanding and near perfect expressions of brilliance - but not all. Service was mostly very good but a bit clumsy and inconsistent at times. A lovely atmosphere and overall a great experience.
One of our favorite restaurants. The service and food is always good.
The whole team is superb, the menu is very special with unexpected but delicious Mexican specialities normally only found in Mexico.
Exquisite food, superb service. Something genuinely different, delivered with style.
Food and drink were fantastic and very enjoyable however overall service was lacking and slow.
We went for the Mexican - it was amazing! The flavours were super, the quantities were perfect and the staff were knowledgable, attentive and kind. We would highly recommend it and will be reurning in the new year.
Very well socially distanced. Stovells go out of their way to get this right. And the food and service are always great.
Lovely atmosphere, the service was excellent. The food options are delicious and need to return to try something different. I'm not a pudding person but the apple tarte tatin was to die for and one to return for!
1st time i've eaten at Stovells and the whole experience was outstanding
Exceptional food, service and a very warm welcome. Will be returning again soon!
We had the Mexican tasting menu and it was phenomenal! One of the best dining experiences me and my partner have ever had! Would recommend to everyone! Also, the service was fantastic! We will definitely be back.
We loved our lunch at Stovell's and would definitely recommend. We'd had to reschedule our reservation several times due to Covid restrictions, but they kept in touch, were very helpful and are so friendly throughout. The meal was excellent, a real experience and cannot wait to return.
The Taste of Mexico 11 course menu was amazing. The food was perfect, the service and knowledge of the food was 5 star, it was great to hear the story behind the dishes.
This is a very special place and we will be coming back for the cocktails and to try the main menu!
Lovely restaurant, beautiful food and great service. I would highly recommend it.
Fantastic food. Slow service. Restaurant area lacks character and warmth.
Overall very pleasant though.
Very nice and quiet place. Food was very good, however based on the reviews we were expecting something better. The duck as a starter is very good but the risotto is just ok. There are some signature cocktails that are very good as well....
Sunday Lunch 1st Nov 2020 rather disappointing experience.
The service was at best adequate.
The wine list as described on their website is completely misleading it indicates a selection of red wines running to several pages. the list at the restaurant is curtailed to one page from which I made a selection only to be advised by the waiter that they hold sold out. I was asked to make another selection no suggestion from the waiter of what may have been a similar alternative. I got lucky and picked one they had.
I had mussels to start which were fine my wife selected the chicken terrine with leeks. Half way through she had to take a glass of water to the toilette to rinse her mouth of the grit that were still in the leeks . We advised the waiter of this and received a message back from the chef to say it could not be helped sometimes grit and soil is caught in the vegetable. He is therefore fully aware of the issue. It appears to me that either they can not be bothered to split and properly clean the vegetables or the chef is so obsessed with presentation that he serves whole leeks in the full knowledge that diners may well have the same experience as my wife. Either way unacceptable. We were offered a replacement but declined.
For the main course we both ordered the beef with roast vegetables and I was somewhat surprised that we were not asked our preference on how well it was cooked it seems at Stovells you just have to accept what the chef prepares. The main course arrived and there was a generous portion of meat unfortunately rather too well done for my taste but OK for my wife. The roast vegetables which were served hidden under the meat were at best very poor particularly the potatoes which were rubbery rather than crisp, they tasted as if they had been prepared several hours earlier and kept warm until served. The veg was just about edible and as I was hungry I ate mine but my wife did not touch hers. My local pub does much better at half the price
Need to improve lighting and ambience in the restaurant as it didn’t feel inviting (the bar was much more cosy). We had a loud table next to us near the entrance so this didn’t help the noise level.
Two items we asked for were not available one of them being a main dish which I believe is a signature dish of theirs and a bottle of wine.
The starter was very average and disappointing and the main was ok.
Excellent food - the bone marrow was absolutely delicious! Service was first rate with friendly and very attentive staff. Highly recommended!
One of my favorite local restaurants but perhaps Covid driven has been losing its edge and the hard to justify best part of a hundred quid a head.
1. Coming out of lock down on arrival you were asked use an alcohol run on hand, menus were accessible by mobile. Now you just arrive sit down and get handed menus. Wine list must have been touched by everyone in the restuarant.
2. Presentation of the food is still great. But the hors d'oeuvre was stone cold at the bottom of the glass. Starts we pleasant but did not make the taste buds sing. My steak main was gorgeous though, wife's halibut needed a better sauce.
3. The pudding menu seems only to change annually. Tennis ball is fun, but my chocolate could desperately do with a biscuit or something to add some texture to a pot of ganache, apart from the quinell of ice cream to the side.
4. Asked for a glass of pinot noir...got something (Merlot or a Shiraz?) but definitely not a pinot. Was a nice wine anyway so given service upstairs is a bit slow, I did not complain.
Hopefully post covid they will do better, and get back to being one of Surrey's finest.
