Bistro
Welcome to Sugar Boat - a relaxed & informal neighbourhood bistro in the heart of the town on Colquhoun Square, a stones throw from the sea front. We are open daily from 7.30am (8.30am on Saturday & 9am on Sunday's) through until late. We serve everything from breakfast with a cracking fry up or eggs benedict with or avocado & poached eggs on toast. For lunch & dinner we offer a la carte menus. Lunch is the more informal with burgers, fish & chips & daily sandwiches. Dinner can be a little more special. Cakes, scones & savoury snacks are available all day. We have a Wine Shop for off sales from our extensive list of over 100 wines - everything from £9.50 per bottle upwards. Enjoy a tip top cocktail from our bar made with premium sprits & our home made purees, cordials and juices or enjoy a pint of a locally brewed beer or a can of local Scottish craft ale. Choose to sit on the square or in our rear courtyard.

Overall we had a lovely evening. Found it quite loud at times which was not ideal. The biggest issue was we were by the door and the draft everytime the door opened was really cold. Some sort of barrier would make for a more pleasant dining experience.

Having had an unfortunate experience on our last visit to the Sugar Boat it was a pleasant surprise to have a much improved one this time. On the last occasion we were seated next to the hatch through which there was a constant flow of dirty dishes to be washed. Lots of disturbance! Our 5 year old grandson was fed promptly at our asking but our food m took over an hour to arrive. We resolved not to return. The 50% main course discount did persuade us todo so.

Food was very good (pancetta wrapped monkfish and a beef bourguigonne) would have got a *5 if they had been a little warmer (must stop watching the Great British Menu). Noise level was only just acceptable - there are very few soft surfaces to absorb any chatter.

The food was outstanding. Unfortunately one of the chefs had to serve our mains courses as the waitress couldn’t be found for 10 minutes and our plates sat waiting on the delivery hatch for 5 minutes before the chef took the initiative. When I came to pay I forgot to offer the loyalty app until after I had paid. When I asked to add to meal cost to the app I was dismissed immediately with a ‘sorry, you should have shown the code before paying’ at which the waitress turned on her heels and walked off.

Lovely wee brunch. Took the dog which was fab but the draft from the door opening is very annoying - needs an entrance porch to stop it being so cold when someone enters. The food was excellent and the service was very good.

Always a pleasure to eat at Sugar Boat. It's quite pricey so it's an occasional treat, otherwise we would go more often. Lost a star as I had asked for a Negroni when we arrived but our server couldn't get access to the stock room for vermouth and they had none in the bar. All 3 of us had the Sunday Roast, and it was delicious, though our friend commented that he would prefer the beef slightly more medium than rare, but that's just a personal preference. Overall, a lovely meal.

Food was lovely but there were a few things that niggled. Three of us sharing a starter but no plates offered so we had to improvise & use napkins. White wine served in a carafe which does not keep white wine cold.

The Sugar Boat is one of those restaurants, that you wish you lived very local to. I would move to Scotland just to be near this restaurant and I really do mean that. The restaurant itself was lovely, oozed character and feeling. The staff were exceptionally professional and friendly. The food was just out of this world and it even has its own wine cellar from which you can buy bottles of wine. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

I have breakfast here as often as possible. The pancakes are incredible, I can’t stress that enough! INCREDIBLE! The food in general is very tasty and well presented. Everything is done to a high standard and it’s immaculately clean. My only small niggle is the soft drinks, when ordering a glass of juice be aware that it is a regular glass, not quite a half pint, and will be 75% ice then topped up with your drink of choice. It’s still my favourite place for breakfast.

Service a bit slow with drinks being the main issue. Overall was good without being outstanding , food not bad and decent cocktails. Value for money ok and in line with other local restaurants but it hasn’t convinced me to make it a regular place to eat.

Really excited to visit again after a gorgeous evening meal but really dissatisfied with food presentation and quantity of portions. My mum ordered the tart with a portion of truffle fries and it came on its own in the middle of a huge plate. No garnish or small side salad. Our door sat for a considerable time ready before we had to ask the waiter to bring it over. To which he appeared grumpy and did not apologise.
