The Swan never under delivers on food or service. The location and views are a given, but I keep coming back and no test goes unanswered. This most recent visit involved taking the final reservation spot of the Saturday evening. I think the kitchen had to pivot to accommodate us. Henry was the consummate host, made the experience even better and the dinner was everything we wanted and more. The Swan is an expertly run and operated, a true beacon for the community at large.

I’ve never had a worse restaurant experience than at The Swan. It started fine — lovely table by the window with a view of the Thames. Then the waiter brought menus and water… and spilled the water all over the menu. At least he noticed and replaced it. We weren’t too hungry, so we asked to share one afternoon tea. The waiter didn’t say we couldn’t, just that we’d only get one tea. Totally fine. What he didn’t mention is that it’s apparently expected to order one per person — something a server might want to explain, especially to foreigners unfamiliar with the do’s and don’ts of British teatime. When the tea arrived, he spilled it too — impressive consistency. The food tray came with a sandwich missing and a sad tomato mozzarella tart that looked like it had been sitting around all day. Ten minutes later, another waiter dropped off the missing sandwich, an extra egg sandwich, and a mini burger with a cheerful “just in case it’s not enough,” which made us feel like freeloaders. We asked if we misunderstood the pricing. He said no worries, we were paying for two trays anyway, so we could have more scones. We got four. We ate two. Then came the real confusion: at the register, we saw we’d only been charged for one tray. I asked why. The waiter said, “Oh, it’s fine — you can make it up by tipping.” I asked, “So… pay for the second tray in the tip?” “Yes, exactly.” Completely thrown off, I said, “OK, then make it £65 instead of £46?” He looked confused. I asked, “Wait, do you mean I should pay for the second tray — but as a tip?” “Yes.” So I said, “OK… then £85, I guess?” And that’s how I ended up tipping £33 to the waiter who spilled tea and water, forgot a sandwich, didn’t explain anything clearly, and made us feel awkward the whole time. And the food? Not even worth £42 to begin with. It’s fine. Nothing special. You’re clearly paying for the experience — and oh boy, what an experience it was.

Really good service. Very welcoming from the tart and attentive during service. Most of the food in the afternoon tea was lovely and to our taste. Great views of the river.

We pre-booked into the restaurant and it was excellent. The noise level in the bar downstairs would have forced us to cancel as it was painful! A busy evening!

The bar area is certainly a bit noisy, but once you move upstairs for dinner things are quiet and comfortable. Dinner was delicious (we had the chicken and the lamb), and the service was too notch. A great visit, and we'll be back!
