Talli Joe is an all-day drinking and dining venue, in a buzzy, casual setting on Shaftesbury Avenue. The team here uses halfplates and fulldrinks to present a new avatar of India on your table.
I couldn’t really have an experience at Talli Joe as the restaurant was closed for refurbishing (car crashed into restaurant 2 weeks before so the restaurant was closed without any mention of when it might reopen - we didn’t even hear that from the restaurant, it was from someone else next to it as the location was completely closed)
It was a really poor customer experience to see the restaurant as open everywhere online only to realise it’s closed when our group got there and we had nowhere to go (also on one of the colder evenings of January); we did find an impromptu location afterwards and had a good time, no thanks to Talli Joe.
So, if you want to go there (I’ve been previously and food was indeed good) call beforehand - which I guess defeats the purpose of making a booking on opentable?
We weren’t able to dine here because the restaurant was shut. We were a party of 6 and had to find last minute reservation. It was one of the girls birthday and this ruined it. Open table didn’t call to notify that the restaurant is shut. This is very poor. Opentable was still advertising this restaurant as having table despite the restaurant was shut. Open table should better advertise the correct information.
Overpriced for v small stingy portions. For example, a single serving of 150ml of masala chai was unremarkable in taste and cost £3 each (!!)
It was empty on a Sat except a couple of other tables - v slow service.
Definitely not going there again!!
Some restraints are about the food, the art of food. Others are a tourist trap money mill. This feels and tastes like the later.
Menu doesn’t label foods with gluten appropriately. Otherwise the food was tasty and spicy.
Starters are great. Mains can be very heavy with thick suace and quite spiced even for an Indian palatte.
Food is a creative twist to Indian curry. Brilliant. Could be toned down a bit on the use of cloves without losing taste.
Goan fish is brilliant. Lamb main is tasteful. Usually Need some more bread or rice with the mains. Portion size of mains are good. One main would work for 2 people especially given it’s a bit spiced and heavy.
Starters are better although cocktails are incredible.
Was surprised that there were not many people after 7pm. Yet service was a let down.
The experience we had here was atrocious - not one of the waiters (all eastern europeans) spoke any English, where miming salt and pepper pots brought us a chilli bottle; the orders were mixed up or duplicated; the food tasted terrible, the portions tiny (for the price); the noise level was way too high; we wanted a mix of set menu and a la carte, the waiter got into a tizz saying we could not do this, all HAD to be one or the other, yet nowhere on the menus did it write that. The only comfort was the stressed-out manager, who bless her spoke a little English so we could convey our frustration at it all. A pity as we then had to leave the poor-tasting food for a nearby McDonalds; embarrassing as we had planned a great night out. How the heck Talli Joe got voted best Indian in London baffled all of us, they have such a prime location yet service and food were really poor - I would never ever go there again, any eaterie in London HAS to be better than this disastrous place.
Great service and friendly staff and nice ambience. But good wasn’t great, expected better taste.
Great food and ambience, bad service.
When we first arrived with a confirmed booking and in time of our booking, the mananger apologizes saying that he cannot accommodate us because there are no tables. Not apologetic at all really, told us there’s nothing he can do, that thenopen table confirmation email wasn’t good enough. Eventually gave us a table.
Mains took 1.5 hours arrive. A side order of roti/naan took 25 mins, after which they served us “pav” bread which the waitress says they consider the same as roti. Poorly trained!
Cuando llegamos no tenían la reserva en el sistema pero nos buscaron una mesa y nos ayudaron mucho las camareras que además sabían castellano!
Nice evening. The food is very tasty but the service is poor. They just need more staff. Plates are plonked down on the table and the waitress muttered what is was and had run off before we could confirm what it was. When the idea of the place is lots of sharing plates it is nice to know what each plate is.
The kitchen wasn't able to deliver all of our food. Dishes came separately, which would be fine as it's tapas. But we were specifically told to order a half main and a side. But these came separately, so the bread arrived after we'd eaten the main. One of our sides never arrived. The service staff were very nice and did their best in the circumstances.
Bad n late service m too Loud food was not street food
Food at best average. Service was fine to start with but once they got busy the service became poor. Beer was warm and they failed to give dishes we had ordered. Trust me there are far better Indian street food places to eat.
CHECK THE BILL! This is my second time visiting Talli Jo's, and although the food is amazing, the service is quite bad. The bill came and it had extra bottle of wine we never ordered and some item that isn't even on the menu. This is the second time this happens to me.
If you ever go here, be patient as service is slow, and always CHECK THE BILL
Restaurant was closed for refurbishment despite having taken the booking for 6 earlier that morning.
Booked a reservation a week ago, the restaurant was closed when we arrived. The restaurant even texted me prior to the booking to confirm my attendance and did not update me that the restaurant was closed.
Awesome food and ambience , enjoyed the cocktails worth trying
We came here hoping for some decent Indian cooking and weren't disappointed (except by the daal which was one of the worst I've ever had!). The food was interesting and used a range of flavours well. We had a lovely meal, just would steer away from the side dishes next time and stick to the small and half plates!
Good food, small plates better than larger ones. Good amount of spice to most of the dishes.
Not the best selection of drinks, and quite expensive as well.
Service was hit and miss throughout. Especially trying to get a table, and being initially refused when the restaurant visibly had tables available.
The food is always very good at Talli Joe's but the volume of the music is just too loud, particularly if you get there before it is busy. The wine is a bit expensive for what it is and lacks variety.
Table for 7 Bar tiny so cannot hold a few people. Wine v expensive for a group out for celebrations. Food super and service flexible and accommidating but very busy.
So great fun with a heavy bill.
food was really good a little on the expensive side but it was flavoursome
Food was nice, but staff didn’t seem to know what was and wasn’t available. Otherwise good service but not child friendly.
Really good choice of cocktails
Surprisingly good food, good service, but an odd atmosphere. The decor is all a bit strange, and the early 2000s chart music was far too loud for a restaurant at lunchtime.
Poor quality Indian food, not great flavours. Meat was tough and cocktails tasted horrid
If you are in need of a quick tasty snack pre-theatre this will work well. The food was very tasty with lovely different flavours of Indian cuisine across the menu. The drinks are overpriced in comparison to other restaurants in this area. It is a shame but what could be a great place is let down by its service. From the manager/owner in the suit to staff members it feels a very hurried rather than welcoming experience and there feels to be a general lack of attentiveness to customers.
Good great but service was really poor. Staff we had didn’t know the menu or speak English that well, so made communicating menu choices very painful
We had the pre- theatre menu which was good value, but be aware the food must be ordered by 6.30pm latest. This menu was good value, but felt the drinks are pricey. Staff were attentive and friendly.
Great buzzy ambience combined with some authentic Indian flavours. Never disappoints with the food quality, and service has been improved a lot compared to our last visit. We were served by an indian lady who had been very attentive at all times.
We would suggest to pay little bit more attention for any special occasion like Birthday or Anniversary on the booking note and offer a small dessert with complements.
Drinks are priced on higher side and Kary Collins is worth trying.
Non-alcoholic selection lacks innovative drinks. Overall, a very satisfying experience and would return soon.
I booked a table for a friend's birthday and the service was great. I mixed up numbers and the staff helped us with a bigger table. They were also able to put together a gluten free option for the party menu for a coeliac that was with us. And they threw in a bottle of prosecco for free for the birthday girl. The food was really good and the party menu was great value for money - I'd definitely recommend it!
Worst service I have ever seen. Even though it was early on Monday night and the restaurant was half full, we waited over half an hour for our meal. Half of the dishes we ordered did not come at all or came with long intervals so we could not enjoy a meal together. After we asked for the missing food from our order, we had to wait for another half an hour for it to arrive. The waiters did not offer any apology or explanation.
We asked for the curries to be mild (which we were assured can be done) and yet they came really spicy and hot, with about a table spoon of rice. We then asked for some bread to finish the curry with, but that took half hour to arrive as well, so did not make any sense either. We refused to pay the service charge. Definitely avoid.
The food was good but not sure about the place itself. The music was too loud, it’s a bit confused. The service was not perfect but waitress was really nice.
All was superb !
All 5 of the party felt extremely sick the night and day after eating here. Definitely would not visit again
It was our second visit and we had great fun. Food is always amazing here and after 3 bottles of wine I believe we were a bit too loud given the fact that it was an old friends get-together but the staff were very good 🙂🙂
I am looking forward to visit soon sometime.
Great food, shame about the lack of beer choice. Just 2 choices of small bottled beers. No draught and very pricey and not cold. Spices food needs pints of beer.
My wife and I had a delicious and promptly served meal before theatre. Great value Indian in the heart of London.
Reception was a bit hit and miss but after that things went smoothly. Food was great and the cocktails in good form. Recommended.
Nice staff, good food
