Lovely greeting, great setting and set up. Could’ve done with one more person serving to help speed but it’s so beautiful that it didn’t detract from the experience.
Having placed food order at 12-30 we didnt receive food until 2-45!!!!
Despite numerous requests as to where the food.
None of the staff looked after the tables for which they took orders and payment, complete shambles!!!
Requested a refund and still waiting, had to leave without food after nearly 2 hours.
Ridiculous, I had invited 18 people and booked all the tables for this and was let down completely.
very nice all round, well organised, clean and tidy
Absolute mayhem ordered my food and didn’t get it until nearly 2 1/2 hours later and then it was wrong
This is a really difficult review to write. I booked a table for six for Sunday lunch. Four of us arrived on time and were shown to our table and told it didn’t have a number so the ordering app wouldn’t work, our other two friends arrived shortly afterwards. We waited 35 minutes for someone to take our order and we chose all of our drinks and meals. The drinks arrived about 15 minutes later. We waited about another 15 minutes and managed to flag someone down to ask about food and they said they would check. By now over an hour had passed. We enquired again after and hour and half, still no sign of food and at the two hour point we decided we’d had enough. The staff apologised profusely and said not to pay for drinks. We really, really wanted to support the pub on its-re-opening, they had put a lot of work into the outside area but it was glaringly obvious that we were not they only customers waiting a long time to be served even though it wasn’t full. Their ordering system using iPads was causing issues, internet at the highest pub in England is not reliable and we understand that so maybe do it the old fashioned way? Unlike some places where one member of staff is responsible for a portion of tables, here it appeared that one person took orders, someone else delivered food and there was no one checking on all tables to make sure everything was ok (no-one approached us to do this). I know they have a new team and processes in place but maybe don’t accept walk-ins if you can’t service the booked tables? We do wish the team well, there are definitely lessons to learn.
Lovely food and polite staff but they did struggle to meet the demands of food orders
First opening weekend after lockdown and although the staff were up against it they worked their socks off. The food is always lovely and the staff are very helpful and go above and beyond. I cant wait to go again. Xx
if it had been acknowledged that the night was a car crash this may have helped , arrived 17.00 1 hr to be served 1st drink during the next 6 hours we managed to order drinks an additional twice , table booked for food 19.00 we ate at 22.00 , food stone cold.
please be aware as a rule the food and service are good , management should have taken the bull by the horns , stopped walk ins , addressed there lack of staff and communicated with the customer , I am sure the TANHILL faithful would have forgiven everything had there been some form of communication and honesty to there lack of preparation when busy.
i will not return but advice anyone who hasn't been to give it a go at least once , when they iron out there shortfalls you will not be disappointed , great location, as a rule good food and most weekends great entertainment.
bitterly disappointed but guarantee your visit will be far better than ours.
Absolutely shocking service, food arrived 3 hours late, puddings 4 hours and was extremely poor quality.
0 organisation. Arrived at 6pm. By 9pm we had only received our starters!
In the end we got a refund for the food we hadn’t had and went to get a Chinese takeaway!
Queued to be seated though we had a booking. After being seated we caught the attention of the waiting staff 3 separate times to ask them to take our food and drinks order. Each time we were told they would send someone over which never happened. It was very busy, the staff were putting out more and more tables and people were still queuing to get in. Though most people seemed to be sat without food or drinks. Both were very slow to come out. Maybe they should have concentrated on the people already seated instead of packing more and more in. The staff had an impossible job I’m sure. Clearly the owners were more interested in quantity of clients as opposed to quality. A member of staff did tell us that food was likely to be 1 1/2 hours which management denied. I don’t doubt this to be true. After being seated for 30 minutes and watching the chaos, we gave up and left with no order taken. The following morning there was numerous discussions heard about the quality of the food being served being way below the past standard. I should say though that breakfast was lovely and good quality ingredients used.
Drinks took far too long. Food was okay but a little cold. Felt like something just wasn’t quite right as spoke to other customers and said it wasn’t normally like that. The place has great potential with the views and the outdoor seating. Staff all friendly and helpful even though you could see they were struggling and probably getting a lot of stick off customers. Would return to give it another try but overall disappointed this time around
Waited 1h45m for food for two people, an hour for first round of two pints then 45 mins for the next two drinks. Teething problems early on but wouldn’t hesitate to revisit as the beer garden is fantastic and I know the service will improve.
We were seated quickly after booking a table, but we couldn't access the online menu to order due to no mobile data signal (which I'm sure lots of other people have same issue up there). Managed to catch a member of staff to ask them and they said someone would come take our order. 35mins later we were still waiting and had started to notice other groups coming in after us having their order taken before us. Eventually caught someone to tell them and she said someone would come. Someone did come after 45 mins from getting there. Ordered food, no problems, drinks arrived fairly quickly. Food arrived in a reasonable length of time. Portion size of Yorkshire pudding meal was massive very worth the money, children's meals would of been lovely had the chicken bits not been extremely overcooked so they were too dry to eat really. The chips were gorgeous!!!
Scenery beautiful, ambience brilliant, gets busy so I'd recommend booking, staff were friendly although I suspect under pressure from all the new rules and expectations.
I would go back :)
Great staff
Great venue
Great time..
Every time we visit Tan Hill inn we always are made to feel very welcome.
Already looking forward to our next visit which won’t be too long!
Being a restaurant General Manager myself I could tell straight away staff weren’t trained properly, which is understandable given the current circumstances. But management were not active in supporting table service or doing check back on tables, or any where to be seen to be honest!
Table of two, 1 round of drinks, 1 main meal each:
We arrived at 19:00, took a while for someone to come over but not too long, ordered our drinks and food straight away. Our drinks didn’t arrive for about 20 minutes if not longer, and our steaks arrived over an hour later. Both steaks were small, tough and cooked completely wrong. I ordered a rare and my partner medium rare; we got two well done steaks. The menu said it came with peppercorn sauce and that didn’t come either.
We ordered another drink once our food arrived but we sat for 30 mins waiting for it and gave up hope by then.
No one checked if our food was ok, and we couldn’t catch anyone to let them know.
Staff looked stressed, uncomfortable, under pressure , and left to take the hit without a manager in site. If I’m honest it was a £50+ meal and I’ve bought and cooked better steaks in a frying pan from the coop. You need to sort this out.
The table next to us also had many problems with their meal and a manager didn’t intervene until there had been over 4 mistakes made.
I normally give places multiple chances but this has been the second time I’ve been and it’s been hectic and awful service, and food. Staff constantly under pressure. Rota better and management need a slap on the wrist for not being around the tables.
You have lost two customers, but I bet from that night you have lost many more, and I will definitely not be recommending you.
The new outdoor area is fabulous. We had a lovely evening, listening to live music and toasting marshmallows.
Really slow! Just simply didn’t have enough staff! Has potential though
Great place with stunning surroundings and great atmosphere. Food and service very good.
Service was quite quick considering how far staff had to walk to bring drinks and food outside. Food was tasty, but quite expensive for drinks.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF REVIEWS AS GOSPEL, THEY ARE NOT ACCURATE!
I have found it necessary to write this review after reading the obviously made up/paid for reviews this week, with false pictures, some of which are taken on tables that are not even available to customers now.
We visited on Thursday 15 April 2021 for a 5pm booking. When we arrived the place was maybe one quarter full, 6 or 7 tables taken. We were told to take any table we wanted (most were empty).
After a long wait I went seeking someone to take our order was told they had had a problem with power but it was up and running now. This was over half an hour after arrival.
We ordered 2 soups for starters as we were freezing by now and 1 pie and mash and 1 chicken burger for mains (their menu is not as advertised).
Over an hour later our soups had still not arrived and we realised something was very wrong.
Asked one of the 3 servers what was happening and were told that their printer had gone down so they could not print the orders (taken on iPads).
JUST HOW LONG WOULD IT HAVE TAKEN FOR THESE 3 SERVERS TO GRAB A NOTEBOOK AND PEN AND ASK THE 6 OR 7 TABLES WHAT THEY HAD ORDERED IF THIS WAS WHAT HAD REALLY HAPPENED, WHICH I VERY MUCH DOUBT.
The people on the table nearest to us left absolutely fuming and mentioned that they had been waiting for food for 1 hour and 40 minutes and it had still not arrived. They even commented that the owners must be having their friends write the positive reviews on Tripadvisor.
When they also added that this was the THIRD time this had happened to them we decided to leave too.
I was willing to let this go until I read the fake reviews and pictures submitted this week.
Everyone was unhappy, only one table received food after nearly 2 hours and even then one of their main courses was missing (we were near enough to hear the conversation).
We left our house at 3:45pm and returned home hungry at 7:40pm. Had to get a Chinese takeaway on the way home.
Totally appalling
I would love to sing Tan Hill's praises after looking forward to coming here for so long, but I was disappointed. The service was painfully slow - about 15 minutes to have our order taken, half an hour to get a drink, an hour for food, mistakes with our food and drink orders. The food we did get however, was good, and the staff were lovely.
We're putting it down to a bad day as other customers were having the same experience. We will try again, perhaps in the camper van so we can stay over and the wait won't matter so much. But as I say, it was hopefully just a bad day and the next time will all we were expecting.
Excellent as always organised excellent service, great food good portions
Dog friendly and amazing views
Fish & chips were spot on but sausage was crossled in the giant yorkshire pud. Was worth a visit!
Booked meal for 1300 hrs didn't get puds till 1445
Food was very good but could have been hotter. Perhaps plate covers would help,.
I know things are difficult in these Covid times and I am sure things will improve every day.
Thank you
A great friendly atmosphere and service, shame I couldn't have stayed longer.
Lovely food and staff were great, stayed over so had a lovely time
Having just found that the Tan Hill was going to have to close again due to Covid 19 the staff remained positive upbeat and attentive. They went the extra mile by looking for wine in the cellar that wasn’t on the wine list. Thankyou great evening
Booked in for dinner on sunday 27th December. After being seated took nearly 30 minutes to even order drinks, food eventually come over 45 minutes after this and was warm at most. Some food was overcooked and solid. Emailed straight after I left and havent heard anything back. Very poor. Wont be going back.
Spot on, very nice place, food was the best we have had in a long time. Thankyou for a lovely afternoon.
Food was great, covid protocols where all in place so felt safe.
We chose not to eat. The dining room was cold and smelled strongly of smoke. After 5 minutes this was causing us to cough. Apparently there was a problem with the wood burner which had caused the pub to be evacuated earlier. We weren’t told any of this on arrival. Very disappointing.
We absolutely love the Tan Hill Inn, live music, lovely staff and a magical feel you won't get anywhere else.
Would recommend the pub but not the food it was extremely disappointing and extremely poor value for money
Lovely menu and food to match. Pub is lovely and relaxing with nice open fire welcoming you through the door. Love this place, well worth the drive and beautiful scenery. Staff welcoming every time thank you
Good atmosphere, great food, great service, fantastic setting.
The food was delicious and the a few of the staff were friendly but they appeared disorganised and the lady in charge was not helping matters and come across quite rude at times. Great location and lovely food.
Fantastic festive meal...lovely friendly atmosphere...our little girl enjoyed seeing santa and the reindeer
The setting was good and quiet. The food could be improved as we felt we paid too much for the food and drink we had on our night out.
Was really nice food was lovely lovely place definitely be back
