The Allotment Vegan Eatery is an entirely plant-based, restaurant at Cathedral Gardens in Manchester city centre, right opposite the Cathedral at the end of Deansgate.

    All restaurants must have off days…and this was one of them. To their credit, the apologies were profuse and a discount was offered - but still, this was a Birthday treat that fell a bit flat. Two of us arrived for a 1.30 lunch booking. Menus were offered, but we were told that there were ‘supply issues’ and so only 3 small plates and 3 large plates were available. There was no real answer, beyond an apology, as to why our booking details hadn’t been used to notify us in advance so that we could make an informed choice. Water was requested, and then very long waits came between arrival of the drink, ordering and food arrival - clearly something was amiss ‘out the back’. We ordered laksa for mains - one of the three remaining options, only to be told that there was no tofu left, so it would be vegetables only. The chosen starters were lovely - some kind of vegetable formed balls with sauce and bread and a mushroom dish with pomegranate seeds that was spectacularly good. The mains, the laksa, was more humdrum - tofu absent, and vegetables, notably broccoli, quite untouched by any cooking process. It was nicely presented, though, and the laksa sauce was pleasantly spicy. We left a quite empty restaurant two hours later with sincere apologies in our ears and generous discounts in our pockets. I hope they sort out their supply difficulties quickly. This was a promising experience that fell short - my friend is planning to give it another go on another day, so fingers crossed!

    Food - I ordered mushroom bourguignon which was described as being served over caramelised onion mash with crusty bread. The mash was standard mash which was very dry and the bread was packet sliced bread. The bourguignon was ok, not great - it had undercooked potatoes in it. Service - the venue seemed to be understaffed, just one girl serving, greeting and taking orders , and she gave the impression of being overwhelmed, even though it wasn’t that busy.     There was only one waitress who was rushed off her feet. The food took a while to appear and one of the starters was off. There was also no mulled wine and the main courses weren't great.

    Best afternoon tea I’ve had for a long time. Lots of savoury choices and imaginative sandwiches. Did take a long time to arrive but it was all freshly made. Would definitely recommend

    Very limited menu, food was quite dry and uninspiring, and overpriced for what it was. Chestnut bourguignon was definitely poorly described as it was just a dry casserole and £16 for a small bit of lasagne with 2 small bits of garlic bread seems very steep! Service was slow and no handwash in the toilet. Overall quite disappointing.

    Our first time to the Allotment, the restaurant is very nice, and the staff were super attentive. The restaurant was a little quiet, which affected the ambience a little, but hats off to whoever selected the music.. it was very good. The food was very good, my wife is a recent convert to plant based food, and we both enjoyed not having to ask "what was in it", and "is this vegan". Oh.. and my wife asked me to mention how great the Ginger Martinis were.. We would highly reccomend this restaurant to both vegans and non vegans, it was that nice. Our only slight grumble, was the loos, they were rather untidy, which stood out against the excellence of everything else. (We would have given it 5 stars). Definitely visit this place.. it really is worth it.

    Delicious food. Tried the vegan afternoon tea which was amazing. Good selection of finger sandwiches, my favourite cauliflower wings, then a scone with cream and jam, a delicious brownie and a red velvet cake. Loved all of it. Definitely going for afternoon tea there again highly reccomend.

    We had booked the Allotment for a birthday meal and were excited about the great menu. Unfortunately, we waited an hour without food and when a member of staff eventually came to update us, it was to let us know that they were a chef down and had called another chef to replace them, but they had not arrived. After another ten minutes or so we decided to leave. The ambiance and menu were impressive, but we should have been made aware of the situation sooner. We would try this restaurant again as the menu did look amazing, but communication with customers definitely needs to be addressed.

    Food was absolutely fantastic and could not fault. The down side was that we were sat next to the only toilet and we were in for 25 minutes until we were asked for our drinks and food order, no starter ordered, then took another 35 minutes (then asked the team where our order was) until food arrived. Asked if we wanted to split the bill but said no and explained we are a couple celebrating our 11 year wedding anniversary (when booking the table was asked why we were attending the venue) and no congratulations, Happy anniversary given (wondering why they ask why attending if no acknowledgement of such an occasion). So over an hour for food to be served, if you are prepared to wait, you will be frustrated for a long time but eventually happy with food

    To be fair we probably chose the wrong dish. Sharing platter was not a good choice. Decidedly underwhelming. A confusion of tastes that ranged from bland to unpleasant. Items on the platter were somewhat random eg pot of ‘gravy’ - whilst tasted ok, no idea what it was meant to go with. Presentation was nice, portion sizes were satisfactory. Overall it was ok but not as expected having eaten here before and had great food. Service was satisfactory / pleasant - overall ambience nice enough. Stick to the small plates or main dishes on the menu.

    Disappointed that the Chestnut Bourgignon was not available (5.30 Friday evening - start of service) Given 3 different excuses - pre-booked group had reserved all there was; another batch of potatoes was currently being cooked; there had been no potato delivery that day. Settled for the risotto which was slightly over cooked and had very little taste of sage.

    We waited quite a lot for our plates to be served and noticed that the quantities varied greatly from one plate to the next. The toffee dessert was too sweet. Too pricey for what it is.

    I’m so happy we found Allotment. They had lots of gluten free options, it’s seems hard to find gluten free vegan options these days! The food was amazing, service was good, lovely ambiance. Only thing I didn’t like was the loud generic pop music but that’s just personal taste. Would return to Manchester just to go here again

    Very bad. I booked a table for my girlfriends birthday, which was noted on the booking reference. There was no mention of this from the server, I wasn't expecting a party but a candle would have been nice. Secondly, half the menu was unavailable. The server then came to my table 30 mins after ordering to tell me there were no wings on the sharing platter and if chips would be fine, I said yes, then they brought them out with wings. For the quality of food, to price, this felt very underwhelming. Staff looked overworked, food was average and waiting time was ridiculous considering we had a table booked. Definitely do would not go back, and would urge other vegans to try other alternatives across Manchester.

    Lovely restaurant, enjoyed our one course, the server was great and really friendly but we felt she needed a bit more help. Our booking was a pre-theatre one, and we thought we had allowed enough time, but it was half an hour before we could order. We just felt there needed to be another person helping for amount of people in the restaurant.

    My friend and I had afternoon tea at allotment and it was delicious. There was cauliflower with mayo sandwiches scones, with jam and cream red velvet cake and chocolate brownies. All served with a glass of Prosecco. Venue was lovely with great decor and the service was good. We finished with a couple of cocktails with friends which were tasty. The chocolate mint espresso martini being a highlight.

    I had the “fish” and chips and it was ok; the fish was quite a small portion and the whole meal was only warm. Some of the chips were not cooked enough. It was as if the plate had been standing a while as the peas had dried and congealed slightly. It was edible but a little disappointing sadly. It’s a lovely place in a really nice setting and the service was excellent.

    The restaurant is nice, lovely placement in the city centre but unfortunately I would not return. I thought the food was overpriced for the quality received, and the menu quite limited. The plantballs were tepid at best and the sandwich filling was miniscule not great considering the cost. £16 for a bit of tofu and small about of veg. Staff were disinterested when we replied to their question in regards to how the food was, just as they when we went to say goodbye upon leaving. There are so many great Vegan places in Manchester where you see they are passionate about food, put time and attention In to their menu's. Here sadly does not.

    The food was absolutely delicious, as always, and the price for such wonderful food is very reasonable. The restaurant is cosy and beautifully decorated, with some amazing views right outside. My absolute favourite place to eat in Manchester.

    For me, the highlight of the afternoon tea was the service, the staff were really accommodating and friendly, it's just a shame the food wasn't to the same standard. The savoury food was the nicest part of the set, namely the cauliflower wings. However the typical assortment one would expect for an afternoon tea, the scones and cakes, were quite poorly made/selected - I am unsure if they were made in-house or not, but either way they were quite dry, and a bit reliant on the jam provided for flavour. I'd still recommend The Allotment for their sharing plate, and mains, but for the afternoon tea it would have to be a pass for now.
