Always a lovely time. Food and service faultless. Love the outdoor space they’ve added; hope it is permanent! Great ambiance. Love that you can order through the table and your phone. Also liked that the Covid precautions are still in place. Staff wearing masks etc. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Excellent paella. Friendly and quick service. Clean and nice environment. Music gave good atmosphere. Tapas dishes a bit overpriced but on the whole excellent evening.
Good distanced outdoor seating under cover. Lovely lamb kebab on house-made flatbread. Delicious. Easy to order via QR code link to website -- fast service.
Lovely food - only disappointment was chicken mezze had very small salad and only 3 bits of chicken and chicken was not hot. But everything else was really fab and staff were excellent
We loved the Anchor before Brexit/Covid, and we are willing to accept issues related to these new challenges. But the food is expensive and the last two times that we have eaten there we have not felt that it was worth it. Our table was in the blazing sun and the staff would not move us to one of the many empty tables. And the food was not good enough- e.g. monkfish felt like it lived most its life in a freezer, dry hamburger drenched in sauce. I have had some good salads in the past- I remember the baby gem with a dijon dressing. But now its old greens without any dressing - yet some how soggy. Finally, portion size has gone down since re-opening.
The Anchor has a beautiful outside dining area with well spaced seating. The service from the staff is warm and professional. This was not my first time at The Anchor and every time I’m blown away by how good the food is.
Chicken burger was excellent, although service was just okay. Took ages for a jug of water to come, although I understand if this is because of crowdedness.
The Anchor is my neighbourhood pub and I have been eating here for 25 years through several different owners - that speaks for itself, I think.
Delicious tacos. Nice vibes!
Currently offering a limited but good quality menu. Well organised and friendly.
Piers is a legend
Unfortunately we came for dinner and had to leave without ordering as there were insufficient vegetarian options
Very good all round. Staff very helpful and friendly. Great Tacos and nice drinks selection.
The food was really disappointing. Dessert served in a plastic cup!
Had a lovely lunch with colleagues in the outside space at the Anchor. There was ample room both in the open air and under canvas shades. Ordering was easy and food was lovely. Nice quiet but convivial ambience. Will be back!
The Anchor is just ace.
It has the best outdoor seating area (loads of space and cover, plus nice twinkling fairy lights and heaters to make it cosy) which is why we almost always choose to go there over anywhere else! Good food and drinks selection (love the halloumi fries, and very happy that it offers Beefeater Blood Orange gin), and friendly staff.
Very lucky that The Anchor is our local!
Staff were friendly and helpful, food was hot and tasty, what else can I say but thank you.
Great service, the app for ordering actually works pretty well, and the outdoor seating area has a fantastic atmosphere. Definitely one of Oxford's best outdoor drinking/dining pubs at the moment!
Very well set up for the Covid situation, only concern I did not receive an email confirmation of oayment or a receipt. Staff helpful and attentive. Location great, but when sitting outside eating .. smokers should be asked to go to a certain area, pregnant woman’s husband had to ask they to not smoke near them and we were eating. Just a thought smoking area.
Great staff nice ambiance. Lovely cocktails Covid safe
Went here last night and have nothing but good things to be said. We were greeted at the enter an empty and seated, polite and friendly staff. Food was absolutely amazing.
Really enjoyed the visit, facilities are excellent for outdoor, socially distanced dining
I love the bar area at the anchor the decor is homely and clean. The food and drinks were great and service prompt. My only reservation was the music was too loud it was difficult to hear our conversation
Great food, friendly staff and generally pleasant atmosphere.
Really excellent selection of starters. We enjoyed a taste of them all. Service was excellent and the outdoor set up is really nice. Have already recommended it.
Amended booking for inside table but they didn’t have one.Waiter said he would sort out but never saw him again! Table outside had no heater so my family were really cold and seats were wet. Waited over 40 minutes for our food and the roast beef was really fatty. No stuffing, 1 carrot and 3 parsnips with a bit of cold cabbage plus 2 potatoes.
Had a table of smokers next to us which was really unpleasant as none of my family smokes.
Had to tip as soon as order was placed before knowing what the service and food would be like. If I had known that the food and service was not going to great I would not have left a tip😞
We had booked as a Fathers Day meal but were left feeling really disappointed and will not return
Great place to meet friends and have a lovely meal.
Grateful to get a table but don't think it was well placed. Right by kitchen door and toilets and it felt a bit in the way of staff and other clientele!
Love the anchor garden though
What a sad falling off. The Anchor used to be a really fine gastropub. No more, alas. I've been thrice now, and found the food poor and service worse. The bros and ladies who are ostensibly servers have an attitude bordering on insulting. My steak for some reason tasted of kerosene - and looked to be a sad cut of meat to begin with. My wife left 3/4 of her salad uneaten. We had a tosst befote bed to fill up. I devoutly hope the old staff and old cook and old spirit will return. We miss you!
Excellent food and service. We had a fantastic lunch.
Always love it here, the staff are insanely helpful and are just a delight to be around. Really nice, relaxing atmosphere. Would give them 5 starts on any other visit but the vegetarian Sunday roast I had was awful. Not a Sunday roast at all, a ‘wellington’ filled with tiny little lentils etc that just ended up as a mushy paste and were flavoured so strongly it just had a curry taste- then it had been topped with salsa? When you’re wanting to go for a Sunday roast, you want a traditional Sunday roast and this just wasn’t it. Please, please, please work on your vegetarian option as I would make eating here on a Sunday a weekly staple! A wellington with chunky vegetables inside, topped with gravy etc would work better! We will still be visiting throughout the week :)
Good food, particularly the fish and chips. Lively atmosphere though got rather noisy.
Chairs rather uncomfortable after a bit!
We chose The Anchor as convenient for walk on the Meadow with visiting out of town friends and there was an outside table as we had our dog.
Bit disconcerted at noise level - several groups with children at adjoining tables- but we got used to it. Maybe being sat under the high wall was the problem........!
Food up to usual high standards and wait-staff dealt efficiently with malfunctioning wine order on App.
Food quite basic and there was an issue with one of our dishes. The waiter immediately brought us a free bottle of wine to apologise. Ambiance was very pleasant though the gravel flooring is very noisy (!). Staff friendly and helpful.
Great pleasant staff, food excellent and value for money, would definitely return and recommend. Well done,
Very agreeable and well managed setting. Very nice & efficient staff. And imaginative & delicious food.
Great place, service, drinks and food. Lovely place to go.
A summery menu with simple dishes, but very well cooked and presented. The chicken kebab, for example, was not dry (so common with breast meat in other restaurants) and the fish and chips was crisp and light. The summer coolers were delicious and the staff were hugely helpful and adaptable when we asked for slight changes to the menu. There is a lot of bright sheltered, outdoor space.
There is an upside and there is a downside. The venue is great, it was a warm day, sitting outside under a heavy plastic tarpaulin was wonderful, the atmosphere that had been created magnificent. So some very considerable pluses. On the downside, by mistake we ordered a large bottle of still water, when we meant to order sparkling water. We realised our mistake after we touched the bottle and opened it. The pub refused to change the bottle on the basis that they would have to throw the old one away. The retail price in a shop of the sparkling water is £1, they charge £4.50 at the pub. I’m not objecting to the price but the fact remains they could’ve changed the bottle and still made a good profit. So this is not about income for the restaurant it is about attitude. It is poor. The lad who served us seemed nice, but we asked him to take the problem to the top man or woman, and the answer came back “no way Jose will we change the bottle“. Of course they’re within their rights to do so, but I found that this was a poor decision on their part. Sadly it then reflected on the fact we weren’t motivated to order dinner which would’ve been six of £10 or 12 pizzas. So a poor decision commercially as well. But other than this experience was good.
It was paella night at the Anchor so we booked a table for 8pm only to find when we arrived that there was no paella left and the only food was some small tapas. The paella provider had grossly underestimated demand but if we had been notified in advance we could have gone elsewhere
