Great place to meet friends and have a lovely meal.
Grateful to get a table but don't think it was well placed. Right by kitchen door and toilets and it felt a bit in the way of staff and other clientele!
Love the anchor garden though
What a sad falling off. The Anchor used to be a really fine gastropub. No more, alas. I've been thrice now, and found the food poor and service worse. The bros and ladies who are ostensibly servers have an attitude bordering on insulting. My steak for some reason tasted of kerosene - and looked to be a sad cut of meat to begin with. My wife left 3/4 of her salad uneaten. We had a tosst befote bed to fill up. I devoutly hope the old staff and old cook and old spirit will return. We miss you!
Always love it here, the staff are insanely helpful and are just a delight to be around. Really nice, relaxing atmosphere. Would give them 5 starts on any other visit but the vegetarian Sunday roast I had was awful. Not a Sunday roast at all, a ‘wellington’ filled with tiny little lentils etc that just ended up as a mushy paste and were flavoured so strongly it just had a curry taste- then it had been topped with salsa? When you’re wanting to go for a Sunday roast, you want a traditional Sunday roast and this just wasn’t it. Please, please, please work on your vegetarian option as I would make eating here on a Sunday a weekly staple! A wellington with chunky vegetables inside, topped with gravy etc would work better! We will still be visiting throughout the week :)
Good food, particularly the fish and chips. Lively atmosphere though got rather noisy.
Chairs rather uncomfortable after a bit!
We chose The Anchor as convenient for walk on the Meadow with visiting out of town friends and there was an outside table as we had our dog.
Bit disconcerted at noise level - several groups with children at adjoining tables- but we got used to it. Maybe being sat under the high wall was the problem........!
Food up to usual high standards and wait-staff dealt efficiently with malfunctioning wine order on App.
Food quite basic and there was an issue with one of our dishes. The waiter immediately brought us a free bottle of wine to apologise. Ambiance was very pleasant though the gravel flooring is very noisy (!). Staff friendly and helpful.
Great pleasant staff, food excellent and value for money, would definitely return and recommend. Well done,
Very agreeable and well managed setting. Very nice & efficient staff. And imaginative & delicious food.
Great place, service, drinks and food. Lovely place to go.
A summery menu with simple dishes, but very well cooked and presented. The chicken kebab, for example, was not dry (so common with breast meat in other restaurants) and the fish and chips was crisp and light. The summer coolers were delicious and the staff were hugely helpful and adaptable when we asked for slight changes to the menu. There is a lot of bright sheltered, outdoor space.
There is an upside and there is a downside. The venue is great, it was a warm day, sitting outside under a heavy plastic tarpaulin was wonderful, the atmosphere that had been created magnificent. So some very considerable pluses. On the downside, by mistake we ordered a large bottle of still water, when we meant to order sparkling water. We realised our mistake after we touched the bottle and opened it. The pub refused to change the bottle on the basis that they would have to throw the old one away. The retail price in a shop of the sparkling water is £1, they charge £4.50 at the pub. I’m not objecting to the price but the fact remains they could’ve changed the bottle and still made a good profit. So this is not about income for the restaurant it is about attitude. It is poor. The lad who served us seemed nice, but we asked him to take the problem to the top man or woman, and the answer came back “no way Jose will we change the bottle“. Of course they’re within their rights to do so, but I found that this was a poor decision on their part. Sadly it then reflected on the fact we weren’t motivated to order dinner which would’ve been six of £10 or 12 pizzas. So a poor decision commercially as well. But other than this experience was good.
It was paella night at the Anchor so we booked a table for 8pm only to find when we arrived that there was no paella left and the only food was some small tapas. The paella provider had grossly underestimated demand but if we had been notified in advance we could have gone elsewhere
Paella night was a big disappointment. No paella and tapas very unimaginative. Considering we pre-booked, no excuse.
Lived up to expectations!
Perfect setting on a summers evening . Appreciate the investment on the canopies .
From the welcome of the staff to the service and food, me and my partner we very impressed with the anchor. We went for a casual lunch and the ambience and space was perfect to have food in the sun. There was plenty of shaded areas too outside and space to catch the sun. We ate some of the Persian bbq food from the pop up tent, and we both agreed how delicious it was
We will absolutely be returning.
Very slow service and waited an hour for food, also lots of rowdy lads there in what was meant to be a cute pub
Fab place for a sunny bank holiday Sunday, with great street food, DJ, atmosphere and friendly staff but the service was unbelievably slow, to the point that we left after being their an hour and a half (after planning on staying all evening) as there was around a 20-30minute for drinks every time we ordered.
It was unremittingly awful:
- very slow service
- appallingly loud music (heavy beats)
The Anchor is in an amazing location but it is wasting what it has
The service was exceptionally good with the team accommodating all our requests. enjoy the opportunity to have an outdoor meal and try a totally new cuisine
Wonderful Staff, great location we go every weekend!
What a wonderful day!
Very well organised
Super helpful attentive staff
Delicious Sunday roast
Great outdoor space, accommodating and speedy service (including ordering online) and good food options
Wry disappointed. The flat iron chicken was such a small portion served on a metal tray. Knives and forks came about 10 minutes later. Poor value, small portions and poor setvice
They have worked really hard to make a proper outside area in these trying times. Very friendly staff, great food and a nice atmosphere. Been three times this year.
Loved this gastro pub!! The staff is super friendly, the menu is amazing and decently priced and all of our food, bar none, tasted AMAZING! I would definitely recommend it if you are visiting Oxford.
The only reason I knocked a star off, and my feedback to the establishment, is that your gents rest room definitely needs some TLC and a revamp ASAP as it’s very dated and awkward at the moment. It’s more dodgy pub than gastro pub… so something to look into :)
Other than that, thank you for a great lunch/afternoon!
Local pub that has really worked hard to keep going during COVID. Well done, we appreciate it.
Excellent! I loved everything about this place! I would definitely recommend it!
Such a great atmosphere outdoors!
I will return, rain or shine!
Lovely decor in restaurant, and pudding was great.
Mains one was unfortunately overcooked and the other was not warm.
Would give it another try though, as perhaps caught on bad night.
Great service and good food. Nice atmosphere, good for groups.
Friendly staff, accommodated baby happily, good menu choices, the outside seating area was well covered. Short wait for food.
Food fresh and tasty. Nice service. Great drinks selection. Only downside is paucity of vegan options.
Delicious food, wonderful service by staff who went above and beyond, fun ambiance. Nothing to complain about at all!
All good, just needed a bit quicker service when asked for a napkin and took 10 mins. Food 5 star 🙌🏻
Such a lovely night! Great cocktails and food! Charlotte went above and beyond to find a table so that we could continue our evening after our allotted time had ended.
Bad experience overall - wouldn't recommend it to others! Have been going to anchor between 1-3 times a week since the easing of lockdown. The first couple of visits here were lovely; the food and the service were great. Since then the experiences have progressively gotten worse and worse. Service is always extremely slow even just for drinks. Last Tuesday, drinks consistently took over 45 minutes to arrive. When asked about the drinks, the staff were rude and impatient and didn't provide any explanation or apologies as to why the drinks were so late. Half of the pizzas ordered hadn't arrived even by the end of the 2-hour booking when certain guests had to leave meaning only half of the party was able to eat. To add to this horrible service, when asked for a refund (several times), the staff couldn't do this until the end of their shift when the pub was closing down for the night. They did however take off a bottle of wine for the troubles which was appreciated. Despite this terrible experience, we still gave the pub the benefit of the doubt, thinking this was a one-off and perhaps they were just understaffed, we came back the following weekend which was a huge mistake. Service was slow as per. Food for one person didn't arrive for a while and was clearly forgotten about; the staff asked her to prove that she had actually ordered the food with an order confirmation and ended up having to pull up her bank app to show that she had already paid for the food before they looked into it. The manager, Vlad, was very rude, patronising and unaccommodating. It seems like bad service is unfortunately just the standard at the Anchor. The covers and the heating outside is all the pub has going for it, to be honest, and now that pubs are reopening the indoor sections, we gladly see no reason to ever return to the Anchor again.
Shame the starters came with the main course. Otherwise nice outdoor seating
Extremely prompt service and lovely staff. Sorted us with a second covered table after our booking was over and made sure we were comfortable with blankets, cushion and umbrella. A brilliant, atmospheric outdoor space with well-priced food and drinks. :)
