The Angel at Hetton
Michael Wignall delivers food that wows on every plate. His ever evolving style creates unique dishes full of flavour, underpinned by a contemporary, less formal approach to fine cuisine. Describing his food as ‘modern, technical and meaningful’, each element brings flavour or texture, enticing diners to experience new combinations and ingredients.
Delicious food. Perfect service. Lovely venue.
Outstanding dishes that struck the right balance between creative sophistication and simplicity.
We have to look at our visit from two independant points of view: Firstly as grandparents of Amber where we can only be proud of her and thankful to The Angel for the way you accepted and guided her.
Secondly as enjoyers of good cuisine, where this review can even be shorter and summarized in one single word: excellent. We hope life will offer us the opportunity to revisit your wonderful restaurant.

Fantastic wedding anniversary lunch the veal sweetbreads were very good
Brilliant food, great service. Couldn't have been better.
Food very good but service slow
I was overcharged
Limited menu for Sunday lunch
Overall the food was very good however the cheese plate had obviously been sat waiting for a while. The service was poor, no attention to detail side dishes not coming promptly with mains. Heard explanations of dishes from other servers at other tables but we didn’t get the same level of service. Overall disappointed especially for the cost of the meal.
Everything about dining at the Angel is perfection. Food will never be the same again.
New decor and a bit of a move up market in terms of food and presentation. Needed the bread and dripping to bulk out a two course meal.
The food we had was very good however there was no vegetarian option on the menu, even though there was on the sample menu online. Luckily we had no strict vegetarians in our party but it seems an omission in 2019.
Excellent all round. Staff very attentive, food and service superb
Exquisite food, friendly staff, and wonderful service - hope they get the michelin star they deserve! xx
Excellent food but service needs to be a bit more polished
Fantastic liitle gem in the middle of Hetton. Welcome was great, nicely decorated throughout, open fire, great service fabulous food, wine coffee etc
Fantastic dining experience. The whole experience faultless.
Couldn’t recommend enough, staff, food venue was absolutely what i think dining should be with a finer edged.
Thanks again and will be sure to come back. Highly recommend the Sunday lunch
The food at the Angel was superb and the staff charming, friendly and informal. Such a pleasure to eat beautifully cooked food without the formality and sometimes pomposity of 'Michelin starred' dining. This was a perfect mix for us and we will certainly find an excuse to go back
Small table for two. No manzanilla sherry available. Very friendly and attent service. Taster menu exceptional, but tiny bit lack of taste in the poached lamb rump. “Potato” never to forget! No verbena nor fresh mint tea. Very good value for us, Belgians. One Michelin star is a minimum. Two stars in Belgium, not to mention France, are easier to get than one star in the UK!
Amazingly Delicious well thought and presented food. Lovely simple decor and attentive friendly service. Great to see the chef in the kitchen. Wine was also a great selection and faultless. A vast improvement on whatever has been here before and I look forward to visiting again and again and again
Superb food and service. Incredible value for Sunday lunch.
Excellent Sunday lunch with a menu that had included both traditional and ‘modern’ dining options. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Very pleasant and spacious ambience in the dining room.
We had a really lovely evening.....
Everywhere was really fresh and refurbished but still keeping the traditional aspects.
The staff were very welcoming and made us feel comfortable.
We enjoyed choosing the wine and made a good choice...
My partner had the tasting menu and I had the vegetarian tasting menu.
Thoroughly enjoyed all aspects, beautifully presented, and all courses were really lovely, starters, mains and desserts..... only the mushroom rice less risotto as a side was a little strong for our liking.....
Was a lovely evening, we needed cheering up after an emotional month.... this really helped to make us feel good again......thank you The Angel, we will certainly be returning soon.
Excellent food with creative flair. Limited menu that really delivered. Excellent wine list. Would have appreciated some quiet background music and not sure about ‘ bench’ type seating.
Service was excellent throughout the evening.
Do believe that more effort should be put into the presentation of G & T. Serving all Gins with basic lime or lemon was disappointing and not am impressive start. However, the evening just got better and better. We are sure a Michelin star will not be long incoming!
Fantastic lunch last Saturday. Trout salad, which I thought might be a bit fussy and delicate but was absolutely delicious with really bold flavours, much more interesting than I was expecting. Main of duck, very generous portion, and interesting as it was served with Japanese flavours that I hadn't seen with duck, but not at all gimmicky, a great dish. Great value set lunch. Can't wait to return.
A wonderful experience and one of the best meals we have ever had. We visited the Angel a few years before and it has changed a little- more of a dining experience rather than a cosy pub. We were really impressed with the service of the staff and the food in every way. Vegetarian options seem a bit limited and we had to ask for the veggie menu. But it was excellent- from homemade sourdough and unusual butter options through to an inventive main course with nice extras. Amazing flavours from veg/ sauces/ purees etc. which left us asking for more bread to clean the plates at the end. Even the touches of homemade truffles and fudge with coffee were superb. Its an expensive experience, but definitely one to treat yourself with. The only shame was that the atmosphere seems lacking compared to how the pub used to feel- it was almost empty and quiet.
Fantastic food, the place has had a makeover and it was a lot better.Light airy modern dining rooms with plenty of space between tables.Staff were excellent and very knowledgeable about the menu.Starters could have been a little larger, but the taste was excellent on all three courses. We had the cheeseboard which was very good but only about a quarter of a teaspoonful of chutney was on the plate which was a shame.
I had the signature Lamb dish for lunch at £34. Quality of the food was excellent but sadly the portion size was pathetic. The meal did not even include vegetables or potatoes which were supplements.
I left the venue very hungry and disappointed!!
Simple! Lovely atmosphere.....friendly approachable staff....food excellent.....will be going back soon.
The food was excellent- beautifully presented & each fork full was a real cornucopia of tastes which complemented each other.
Service was excellent too- our waiter was both charming & informative.
It was a little loud where we were seated as we were next to the bar area.
Second visit in as many weeks but this time we stayed over. Studio room was lovely with comfy beds with top quality bedding, soft fluffy towels and quality fixtures and fittings. We will be going back and soon.
Lovely tastes and presentation of all courses , liked the mixture of traditional Sunday roast and more modern dishes
Really lovely food and service. Quite expensive but for a treat well worth it. Staff were excellent!
Excellent food, wine and service. Would definitely recommend.
Amazing food, which one would expect from a gourmet restaurant rather than a gastro pub.
Great to see Wignall still providing the same level of food , just a bit disappointing in regards to the service
We visited for the first time 2 weeks ago on the recommendation of friends and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mentioned how good it was to some other friends and ended up going again the following Sunday and they loved i! I’m sure we’ll be back but think we’ll give it a miss this Sunday as 3 in a row might be pushing it 😀
Wonderful food. The beef was heavenly, I've never had any so tender and flavourful. Excellent wine list, well served at the right temperature. Altogether a memorable evening.
The food is simply exquisite here - the flavours, textures and colours are a delight. Portion size is perfect, not at all over-facing, yet so full of flavour and well-balanced ingredients that you feel fulfilled by the end.
We visited this time with our two young children (2 and 6). Their menu was also wonderful - the quality of the fish was excellent and the doughnuts went down a treat!
All staff were very attentive and friendly and our main waiter was wonderful - very humorous and engaging with the children.
Excellent value for money for such wonderful food and service.
Excellent taste, quality and presentation of food. The optional additional course is highly recommended. One of the best tasting experiences I’ve had.
Great location, fantastic staff & amazing food.
