We were made very welcome by friendly staff. Served at the table for food and drinks. Food is very good and very good value for money, huge portions. Cannot fault this place. Felt safe as everyone was obeying the Corona virus distancing rules.
Very good in difficult circumstances
Great relaxed atmosphere, our food was excellent especially the enormous portion of fish and chips!!
Great all round, food and service. Table available on time
lovely food, pleasant staff, social distancing practises were very well carried out.
It is a good honest pub with a decent menu , food served well in generous portions , good quality , good value , friendly staff , all in all a good place to visit!
As unusual excellent food and excellent service. Thank you.
Nice fresh food and friendly staff. Good range of drinks will be back to try other things
Really good home made food. Good service. Dealt well with food allergies and intolerances. Good vegetarian choice. We were a party of 9 and everyone enjoyed it. Service wasnt rushed or too slow. Just right. Lovely night had by all. Thank you.
As always the food was fantastic. Very accommodating to cater for needs from 6 to 91. Fantastic value for 6 people to eat for under £70!!!!
Booked a table for our Anniversary and wasn't disappointed. Food was delicious with lots of choice, service excellent, and a large selection of drinks. We'll be back go try more from the menu :)
Family meal - four diners - excellent food, very tasty. Would definitely return plenty of the menu to tempt us back.
Excellent food and nice atmosphere 👍
All good again. A lovely quiet Sunday meal with family. What’s not to like. I had the Scampi with salad and it was lovely. Avoiding the carbs these days so a good choice for me. Others had no complaints with the traditional scampi and chips and the lasagne. Can recommend them all.
Although the waitress spilled a tray of drinks on me and I ate my meal with damp trousers, the food was home cooked and excellent although it always is. Very good value and a good variety. Smaller portions of Sunday roast not advertised but available on request. No complaints but the offer of a free coffee would have been nice.
Food was great, and the ambience was that of a cosy local pub, but service was extremely slow. It would have been better to state in advance that the pub does not accept high denomination notes (£50), as this can become a problem for tourists who only carry cash.
Four dined - all good quality food - only criticism and this is not negative was the quantity of food on the plates. We found the quantities slightly overwhelming especially one from the specials board - giant Yorkshire pudding with Roast Pork, stuffing and all the trimmings. Looked really tasty but just too much!
All starters and mains as I said really good quality food and well presented - sadly no room for desert but there were plenty of options should we have been tempted.
Superb fish dish. Friendly service. Good ambiance.
We had Sunday lunch for two at 'The Avenue' and very much enjoyed this. The food was lovely and good value. The pub is nicely presented and is a pleasant venue. We will happily return.
Lovely food as usual for this venue. Although for a Sunday lunch we did not choose the usual this time. We had Scampi, A Cod and two Lasagnes. All my guests enjoyed their meal. The only complaint I had was the level of noise. Unfortunately one person somewhere was having a lovely time for him and laughing very loudly throughout our meal. Unfair for this venue as it does appear some people have lost the ability to be considerate in general.
I booked a Table for 4 for my wifes birthday 10 days in advance we arrived to a bar area that was overcrowded because all the area at the back of the pub was set out for a 60th birthday party, we were put at a table right next to that area in a corner that was set for the party, all the people invited to this party were stood at the bar right behind this table we were given, balloons popping loud talking going on and we were seated in the middle of it we could not hear ourselves talking, the pub could of at least notified us to see if we still wanted to attend, they e/mailed me several times to remind me I had a table booked. This was the pub thinking of the larger bill in my opinion not a first time customer out for a quiet meal with his wife. To cater for this type of party should be a separate function room not overpowering other guests. (will never go again) RUBBISH !
Family meal - quite a busy evening for dining, but our food was served well and hot. Very little returned to the kitchen. Unfortunately due to meal size non in our party could manage a sweet but the descriptions sounded very good.
Excellent food. All 5 of us (age range from 5 to 90) enjoyed. Steak and cheese chiabatta was outstanding. Meal and drinks came to just ove £30
Service not great brought mains before starters. Had to ask for cutlery seemed to take forever sat there waiting then came without spoon for soup. Food nice but would not go back because of service.
We visited for lunch as a family party of 9, choosing it because one of the party is an undergraduate at the university. The pub did not disappoint, indee, it exceeded expectations. Fitted the occasion well, and the ease of axcess to the motorway and good parking were important factors, but would have been no good if the lunch had been bad.
Saturday evening meal - four dined. We had starters and mains - all food excellent for a good price. Would definitely recommend The Avenue for any occasion.
So far so good, love the food and the staff couldn’t be nicer. My one and only complaint is that table in the middle of the entrance to the restaurant, when taken to this table for two I refused it and was given another table albeit it came with a time limit (fair enough). When watching a couple eating at that table later on, it must have felt like they were in Clapham junction with the close proxcimity of staff passing serving meals and customers coming and going. Would I eat there again, absolutely.
We had booked this on the basis of the steak night which they no longer do!
As the steak deal wasnt available we enjoyed a nicely prepared game pie and a good (and large) haddock both pleasantly served.
Early dinner so not busy and all very enjoyable
We went there whilst spending a few days in Durham. We had the steak offer which was very nice and value for money.
Good choice of meals and desserts. My husband had a delicious steak and ale pie. All tender and lean meat with no fat or gristle. Gravy served separately in a cute miniature saucepan. I had vege lasagne with salad and it was delicious. The chips are gorgeous!
Would definitely go back to try the dessert next time. (We were very full after our main course). Good value for money.
Great value Sunday lunch and everything first rate from a tasty gravy to pink meats. A new regular for us!
Family meal - all had starters and mains, excellent quality. Only 1 managed a desert due to size of meals. Waiting staff - efficient and only enquired once each course if everything was ok. Would have no problems recommending The Avenue to anyone wanting a good quality meal.
We had a lovely Sunday lunch for Mothers Day. Despite it being very busy the staff were friendly, helpful and the service excellent. The food was very good, plentiful and served piping hot. The only drawback was that at times it was noisy, but that was possibly inevitable given that was Mothers Day and lots of children were present. I would highly recommend The Avenue to anyone wanting great food, a good atmosphere and value for money.
Please be aware that my review is only in respect of my meal not my dining companions.
Sunday lunch, always a worry that there is only one vegetarian option and that it is the ubiquitous vegetable lasagne. What a shambles of a dish. It looked and felt microwaved and 'bought in'. If it was not, the chef should be ashamed of themself. The vegatables were a sloppy, overcooked mess, mainly courgettes. Served with a feeble piece of floppy bread/toast with a splodge of garlic butter applied. Chips were ok but very sparse. The sort of dish you'd pay £4.99 for in a low end chain pub and you still would be underwhelmed.
The traditioned roasts looked fine.
Nicely cooked and presented food, also good portion sizes
Fantastic menu with great food. Portion sizes are very generous. Sunday roasts are delicious. Been here several times and never disappointed. Kids menu is really good and they accommodated for our children`s individual tastes. Would definitely recommend and I will definitely be going back
Very good restaurant in a desirable area. Food at least as good as expected with attentive service. Not too big or too busy - just a nice manageable size. Will be back soon.
Lovely Sunday lunch spot, excellent value and quality food, booking online was a breeze. Just glad my friend lives within walking distance as the car park fills up quick! (although there’s always on street parking available so no major problem, dear reader) The staff are attentive and very helpful (even bringing towels when someone has a clumsy moment of knocking over their glass). Christmas menu is booking up fast and for good reason, just please leave a space for me!
Everyone in our large group was very happy with the whole experience, especially the food and the value.
The food was ok. Just ok. Burnt yorkshires, half the roastys were hard and the gravy tasted weird like the cornflour hadn't been cooked out properly. Bar that the meat was perfect and veg was spot on. Due to the above tho I won't be back.
