Went on a Wednesday and it happened to be 1/2 price bottles of wine! Cocktails were very good, loved the crushed ice. Food was just OK. Caprese salad was made with grape/pearl tomaotes which I thought was odd, burrata was fresh. I had crabcake sandwich which was nothing special, pan seared but the crab seemed that it was pulled apart too much, the patty was very dense, no jumbo lump--seemed like a crab cake you'd get in the middle of Februrary, not 2nd week of August. Tuna tartare appetizer proportion of tuna to avacado was off--it was about 1/3 tuna, and 2/3 avacado--could have been called "avacado tartar". Spinach/artichoke dip lacked somehting...really no flavor.
Overall, everything was ok, not in a situation where we felt anything should be sent back, just thought it could been a little bit better.
Unfortunately, we did not have a great experience at this new neighborhood joint. Both the crab cake and the shrimp po boy were pretty terrible, despite seeming to be specialities of the house. Both the host and the server were very nice and folks seemed like they were trying but the poor food couldn't be overcome. My parents had a pretty average burger and we also had a caprese salad that was a little too wet. Sorry to say that if the kinks aren't worked out we probably won't be back.
Great burger. Nice service. Overall fresh good tasting food.
Enjoyed it. Nice outdoor patio. Good salads. Neighborhood restaurant. First time, but will be back.
The menu has changed since the restaurant first opened and is a big improvement. The Santa Fe BBQ Chicken salad is delicious! Staff is friendly, but there are not enough servers. Tough to get water refilled, questions answered. It's a good place for Sunday brunch. Nice addition to the 'hood.
Very slow service
The food was very good. From choices to preparation to taste.... It's a great neighborhood restaurant and bar to at which to meet friends. The Avenue is also a place to venture to to try a new spot that will become a regular stop.
Very good service and good food.
The food and the service was spectacular. I cant wait to go back and try more items off the menu!
Pricey bar food. If you are looking to go to a basic bar/lounge area to watch a game on TV or play a game then this place is for you. We went for dinner and found the food ok but pricey for what you get. Sat downstairs because the upstairs had live music and was too loud to have a conversation.
Easy meal for my family of 5 (3 kids under 6) to enjoy and sit outside. Thursday night live music was a nice touch. Pretty good meal too.
good drink specials and good food! The bar was cozy and the staff very nice.
As usual, the food was very good. After a little time, the staff was accommodating and found us a quieter table. That was much appreciated.
We've been there twice, for dinner and now brunch. The food is fresh and a bit unusual -- what appears to be a multi-grain wheat for toast, moist and simply seasoned hash browns, maple sausage. They seem to work at finding innovative though simple preparations and presentations, while avoiding over the top creations that too often don't work. The dinner we enjoyed was on a weekend, when families accounted for probably a third of the tables -- a bit noisy as you'd expect in a small space, but with a friendly neighborhood feel. The Avenue is our best find in the last couple years.
The Avenue is very nice--the menu has a diverse array of options. We had the vegetarian sandwich.
Great service and food at a reasonable price - This was first time we had visited, before movie at Avalon. The ribs, pulled pork sandwich and fried chicken sandwiches were very tasty. Even the green beans were fresh and not overcooked. We'll definitely be back.
We came here after a movie at the Avalon. The atmosphere is fun--bustling and homey but nice enough for a date night out. Food is good; I wouldn't say great--a very good value though. I had the mac and cheese--cooked to perfection but not cheesy enough--and a house side salad which was pretty boring, just mixed leafy greens and some shredded carrots and 1 or 2 croutons and a dash of balsamic vinaigrette. Service was very good, and the manager (I presume) stopped by our table to see how everything was--she was very friendly and welcoming. We'll return when we're in the area again and will try something else on the menu. I think I'd prefer to pay a few dollars more in exchange for higher quality food, though
They easily accommodated our crowd of 10 and were very friendly. The menu had a range of items to satisfy our range of diets.
Great food, service and ambiance! The Avenue never disappoints!
They gave away our reservation and me and my kids had to sit at the bar for my birthday lunch.
As a first time visitor and neighbor, I was excited to try the Avenue after its very long roll out (too many attempts speaking to an opening without actually opening).
The food was great and the service was good. While there was a demand for seating, it was not problematic getting a reservation which was a huge plus.
This is a relatively small space so manage accordingly, particularly since it seems that every seating area is designed for a foursome which could prove to be awkward for a couple. The decor was interesting and looked attractive, however, the seats and tables were not comfortable. The seats were too low for the high top tables, the chairs were too heavy to move easily, there was no place for one’s feet (when seated on the director’s chair stools).
I was excited and had high hopes, but felt a little underwhelmed. I will go back, but I doubt it will be my first choice in the neighborhood.
Appetizer served at same time as entrees despite prior guidance. Two shrimp scampi entrees served 10 minutes after other entrees. Had to send steak back bc it was cooked rare not medium rare. No apology from server. And no comp food. Even charged us for birthday dessert. Unbelievable.
Very friendly service and atmosphere. Excellent sandwiches and crab cakes.
Good food for the most part. Somewhat expensive. Excellent hamburger, good Pork dip sandwich, baby back ribs not so good/dry. Good apple crumble dessert. VERY LOUD.
We love you guys!
Nice new addition to the Chevy Chase neighborhood. Contemporary sports bar setting. Good salads and burgers. Brunch on Sundays only however.
The crab-cakes are AMAZING! They know what they are doing when it comes to good food.
Mahi mahi salad was light on ingredients listed in menu except for lettuce plus the piece of fish was small. But most annoying was that we asked to be seated at window table, were told it was reserved for a party of four, and then it was soon given to a couple. Poor hostess management of space and requests.
I had a lovely dinner here with my mom and the food and service were great. We were lucky to get an outside seat and thoroughly enjoyed it. She had the steak salad and I had the mahi salad and both were delish.
I really wanted to love The Avenue as I live in the area and we are in need of some new dining establishments. First, the positives: The staff was welcoming and friendly and very accommodating. We were there on a Thursday evening around 7:30 and it was pretty empty; so noise level is hard to gauge, but it was quiet that night. Our server was attentive, informative and accommodating. At her suggestion I ordered the Pork dip sandwich with a side salad. I asked if it were Pork tenderloin or Pork loin and she (incorrectly) said it was tenderloin. What I received was a roll filled with minimal pork and literally 80% fat. I sent it back and she agreed it was fatty (why no one bothered to notice as it came out of the kitchen is a problem for me). They brought out another version which was overcooked but very lean pork...overall, tasteless and not good. Two people ordered the avocado salad and asked for chicken with it and loved their meal. Another ordered the crabcake sandwich and was not thrilled; but didn't want to have to figure out what else to order. Two others ordered steaks and seemed very satisfied. We also were underwhelmed by the red wine selection...I mean how do you put a terrible Malbec on a menu? Food is meh. Can't imagine the chaos that must ensue on a busy night. I felt terrible because it was my suggestion that brought 6 of us to The Avenue...oh well.
World Cup! Lovely time.
Second time there, even worse than the first. Given the same odd table where all are seated Last-Supper-style. Served a wine that tasted so off that I asked the server to try it; she claimed it was fine. It was not fine. Food was not forthcoming after 40 min of waiting. Had to ask for the bill before the food came as we had a show to get to. Will not be back unless there is evidence of a radical change in mgmt.
Took family before a movie. Nice ambiance. They will learn that chairs need cushions, wait staff needs more training (not adept at taking order, revisiting table to assess needs, fill water etc). Food is very nice and well priced. Issue is that it took a full 45 minutes for the food to come after ordering. That’s just too long with out an explanation or apology. It took what should have been a nice casual family dinner and made it uncomfortable as we grew impatient and hungry. Hopefully they can fix this problem.
I agree with others who have noted that staff socializes around bar together— doesn’t give a professional appearance and when food do delayed makes it seem like less focus on diners than there should be.
The Avenue was awesome! Sat inside but right by the open door patio so had the feeling of both. The crab cakes were spot on and the service was impeccable. Brought all three of our kids ranging age from 4 - 9 so definitely kid-friendly. Highly recommend!
Decent food, and close to the Avalon Theatre. Avoid the seating on the tables with high bar stools -- very uncomfortable.
The crab pasta is delicious. The Arctic char was done just right
When we arrived with our reservation we were seated at an odd rectangular table near the bar that was very loud. I asked if we might move to an empty table near the window but was told that it was reserved for a large party. Five minutes later a party of 3 was seated there . . . and it was downhill from there. This feels like a very low effort restaurant where a group of friends got together to start a restaurant so they could buy liquor at wholesale. Average food, poor service, extremely noisy from the bar with a manager who stared at tables all night (I could see him in a mirror we were facing). Kind of strange and too bad because the neighborhood could support another place.
Great food and fantastic staff. Absolutely worth checking out!
The food was very good, we had a fabulous waitress and we appreciated the free valet parking
A new neighborhood restaurant that was surprisingly good. Conversation was easy, there's a bar, but not too noisy. The upstairs room was holding a graduation celebration and we couldn't hear any noise from them. that's a good sign. live piano on Thursdays. Great spot for a meal before the movies at the Avalon
