Beautiful location, lovely staff who looked after us magnificently.
Had a lovely table & lovely and quiet as a Monday night! Great food, too apart from too much salt on the chips!
Unfortunately we had a dreadful experience at the Barley Mow. I had booked a table for 4 and a toddler for my birthday. Arrived and was seated outside, asked for a high chair which didn’t come. We waited 40 minutes before any staff even came to our table, only to be told they weren’t taking any more orders for food as they were “backed up”. Which is ridiculous as we booked a table for lunch! When questioned when we would be able to order, the waitress said “I don’t know” which is just unacceptable when we had pre-booked a table for a birthday lunch! She then went to get her supervisor who took another 10 minutes to come over and then proceeded to tell us the same thing. No indication of how long we would have to wait, no offer of a complimentary drink, nothing. I was very shocked at the service and the fact they expected us to “sit around” waiting until they decided we could order, who knows how long that would have been! Completely baffled at the way the place was run, especially as one of our party had the same experience previously but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and try again, only for it to happen a second time! We won’t be going back, and I will not recommend to anyone, which is unfortunate because the setting is lovely but it’s run horrendously.
Terrible experience we were sat in a room on our own and after being served drinks then completely forgotten about for an hour. When I spoke to a member of staff I was just told it was busy so after another 10 minutes of waiting we decided to leave. As I paid for my drinks I was asked why I was leaving and after explaining my reason they told me I could have my order in 2 minutes so I asked why I couldn’t have had it sooner the reply was the same as before ”we’re busy” not very customer friendly. I duly paid and left vowing never to return and be treated so disrespectfully there again.
We were so disappointed with our visit to the Barley Mow due to the dreadful service received. We booked our table in advance, as we expected it to be busy on a Sunday. We arrived on time, and were eventually shown to a table in the garden - nothing had been reserved for us as expected. Drinks arrived within reasonable time, but sadly this was about the best part of the service we received. Even though we had prebooked our table, we were soon told that the kitchen had just taken a big order, had no more capacity to take food orders and that we would have to wait. Our table was booked for lunch at 12.45pm. We didn’t receive our meal until 3.10pm. Nothing was offered in compensation, no snacks or complimentary drinks, even though we politely expressed our dissatisfaction to the staff. The toilets were inadequate for the size of the pub, and needed cleaning. Not good, especially in the current pandemic. We wont be returning. It’s probably the worst customer experience we’ve had in any retail/ hospitality outlet, and we do try to be reasonable customers.
Three is us popped into here after a long drive and it was lovely. Nice staff and lovely food, will definitely be back.
Sat in beautiful beer garden. So peaceful and sunny. Staff so friendly and helpful. Ordered ham hock terrine but no available. Chicken pate delicious. Hopefully have the ham hock terrine next time! Food just lovely
Will definitely be back xx
Food delicious but abysmal service. Table wasnt cleaned - ended up doing myself. Had to keep asking for everything from cutlery, ketchup 3 people had chips and when they finally brought the ketchup only one tiny little pot , 4 times for a glass of soda water, jug of tap water which they finally at the end of dinner brought but was only a small bottle, horseradish sauce for the beef roast the kids dishes however dreadful - child burger dry with nothing in it just a bun and a dried up piece of meet and kids pasta was pasta with a very basic puree sauce.
Good for kids, big park lots of space to run around. Food is average, service is ok but not the best. Our bill was lost, they found it but it had already been paid by someone else due to fault of the restaurant, tried telling us it hadn’t -even though the bottom of the receipt stated the amount of cash received and change given. We were happy to pay for our own bill, although someone else was charged the wrong amount - hopefully they didn’t over pay!
Won’t be going back anytime soon
Lovely food and lovely outdoor area for seating and playground for the kids.
Service was quite slow - was a bit busy but wouldn't say excessive.
An unusually hot and sunny Sunday lunch time. Very busy and frankly the staff were overwhelmed. long waits for everything. The food was acceptable. I was impressed with the stoicism of the staff, while under a lot of pressure and working in such hot conditions, they remained friendly, helpful and professional.
Having a large open play area certainly saved the day
Good choice of menu. Excellent quality. Reasonably priced.
Gorgeous pub, great location and outdoor play area for kiddies.
Food options were not vast but you get the generic pub food.
It was tasty and loved by all, way overpriced in our opinion.
We went with our grandkids who are 3 and 5, and the food portions for childrens menu were massively too big. I did ask for the future if we could order 1 child meal and have 2 plates and was told that this would be ok, but it would have been handy if that had been offered beforehand because it must have been obvious to the waitress that the meals that were coming were not suitable for the age.
The childrens menu states that it is for under 12s , perhaps a menu for smaller children would be useful considering that there is a playground for that age group.
On a different matter, when our bill came, 4 phantom expensive drinks were added to the bottom of our food and drink to the value of over £20. To be fair , these were immediately removed when challenged but you need to check your bill carefully.
The play area for the children was very good, but we went on a not too busy time so the kids could play well.
The views of the countryside make this a pub worth revisiting on a sunny day.
No customer care, poor quality food and service, won't be returning.
the meal was nice but there was not much veg i was going to book for chistmas but i dont think i will now
It’s good, but portions have shrunk (possibly not a bad thing!), not sure why we were given an outdoor table when we requested indoor seating (didn’t question it as it was a nice warm day) but if they are still not doing indoor seating for whatever reason then they need to make that clear. Service was a bit slow and when we requested the bill they seemed unable to produce it. When I went to the outside bar they appeared confused. Also don’t like the optional 10% service charge that is automatically added to the bill….I feel it’s cheating as who really checks the small print? I paid it this time but won’t be in the future unless the bookings and service improves to warrant it.
Luke warm roast dinner, no cauliflower cheese!! Only got there at 12:30 so no excuse. Mediocre, won't be going back
Food was expensive and bitterly disappointing. 'Soup' you can stand a spoon up in, stale bread to break your teeth on and ham hock 'terrine' more akin to duck pate (see photo).
Staff were friendly but had to be flagged down for service, no follow ups.
Table lamps at eye height, we had to remove the bulb to avoid being blinded, staff didn't seem to notice we'd done that.
Prior to lockdown we came here and loved it so much so this was extremely disappointing and frankly embarrassing as we had a guest with us.
Lockdown has been tough, but it isn't a catch all excuse, things need to improve.
Food came out cold. Fish batter inedible.
Too long waiting for dessert so gave up. Paid for what we had and left. Asked for service charge to be removed from bill.
Fabulous setting, efficient service & amazing food
I have been to this pub before and had a very enjoyable experience however this time fell slightly short. The service could be improved. The bar wasn’t really being watched then the young lad serving me literally ran away in the middle of serving me and so I waited when a young girl finished serving me but seemed somewhat confused. I would say the food is very pricey and not so much spectacular than other pubs. All that said it was a Monday evening and I’m not put off from returning another day
Absolutely awful. Couldn’t wait to get out of there.
Everything was just OK. Staff were lovely but got the impression that the kitchen was struggling. Food arrived at table at different times with quite a wait between!
We were seated indoors and waited over 20 minutes for our drinks. When we raised this with one of the many staff stood around doing very little, they apologised and confirmed we had been forgotten about. Nice start. When the wine eventually arrived, the glass was filthy. We requested another which was much less dirty but still not the level of cleanliness one would expect in any establishment.
My partner was insisting at that point that we leave before our food arrives, and I mistakenly said we should give them the benefit of doubt.
The two roasts arrived lukewarm, with the potatoes and parsnips looking and tasting dehydrated, as if reheated, and the rare beef overcooked to a medium to well-done state. The pork belly was tough, and the condiments arrived in sachets.
We complained about the drinks and food to the wait staff who directed us to another staff member. She was a go-between with the manager who turned out to be the head-chef. He offered a discount on the beef. We rejected the discount and said we're not paying for the beef roast. We asked to speak in person, and he presented himself. We repeated our case, and he then threatened us with the police if we didn't pay 50% of the beef roast cost, stating that our images and car number plate would be caught by their cameras. He rejected any notion that the food had been reheated, or overcooked, and he claimed all wait staff were instructed to advise patrons that the beef was, conveniently on that day, to be delivered cooked medium.
He blamed the fact we were overlooked on our drinks to there being lots of people to serve. He had the audacity to lie to our faces and then threaten us with the police.
I reluctantly paid for our drinks and one of the roasts, against my partner's wishes, and we drove home in complete disbelief. The staff were young and inexperienced, but overall fine, however the manager was altogether something else.
We were treating an elderly relative to Sunday lunch, the food was lovely and the staff were very helpful.
We had a lovely family lunch on Sunday. Would recommend. Food great, service really good. Lovely place to go.
Lovely place to go on a sunny evening . Children loved the outside play area and adults were able to watch whilst enjoying the food and drinks.
Pleasant but inattentive staff, food was a little bland, beer selection is really poor. However, it’s a lovely venue with great kids playground.
Had a great evening in fantastic pub garden with family and friends. Fantastic food - including best quiche I’ve ever had! (Chef special). Lovely staff. Will definitely be going back.
Good food and cheerful service. Lots of outdoor space for children to play.
Unfortunately I was served a completely burnt quiche twice!
Lovely fresh food, nice pub garden although close to a busy road.
Delightful venue with lovely gardens, nicely varied menu, delicious food, very well cooked, served by friendly and attentive staff. Very reasonably priced and plenty of parking, together with a children’s play area. Highly recommended.
Very very average at best. Food was luke warm and they only had one of eight red wines available (the most expensive one, funny that) which was nothing to write home about. Apparently they won't accept the NHS app as proof my son is 18 and they totally forgot the pudding which came as something of a relief. Won't be going back.
Lovely pub, such great service and the food was great! Thank you so much!!
Awful food. Such a shame as last time I we went it was lovely we had been looking forward to it. This time a different story. very odd flavours on the chicken burger - the bun was soggy due to amount of liquid in the burger and lettuce wilted from the heat. Chips undercooked and a couple were raw. One of my sons had tomato pasta which was tasteless and unpleasant. Other child had sausage and chips and again undercooked chips. Very disappointing meal. Service was non attentive and scarce.
Fabulous toast as always the only place I’ve seen actually wiping down their menus.
Always efficient and friendly we’ll be back soon
Enjoyed a nice lunch with my husband. Excellent service and great food lovely setting
Lovely lunch, ploughman’s was fantastic! Outside seating and garden area is the place to be in this weather, so many great food options on the menu, staff very friendly
