The Bear and Ragged Staff
80th birthday treat for my auntie and all the staff went the extra mile, we were so delighted to be treated so well. Keep that standard going and you’ll soon have a star!
Not as good as last visit a few years ago. Several items ordered we're forgotten and the food was OK but not great for the prices charged. Roast potatoes were pre cooked and reheated and my personal hate side dishes were charged separately. £3.50 for some boiled cabbage is ridiculous. When serving a roast dinner is should co.e with a selection of veg!
This is a go to meeting point for myself and best friend (it’s a half way point between us.). This was our 3rd visit and was just as good as the previous 2 times. They even knew it had recently been my birthday and gave me a free glass of Prosecco. A lovely touch. We’ll be back
My daughter is gluten and lactose intolerant. Unfortunately there was only one main course she could have. No choice. Now a days most places are far more accommodating.
Daughters 8th Birthday
Overall we received poor service, we was served by 4 different servers, who lacked experience and knowledge, I had the beef wellington which was tough and overcooked, over priced too,
Excellent service and food.
Lovely pub, staff are friendly and helpful
Nice pub. Friendly and welcoming staff. Good decor and ambiance. Good menu selection. Unfortunately our food wasn’t great for the price we paid. My husband didn’t enjoy either his pate starter nor his pie for mains. I had caramelised onion tart and calves livers which were okay. Didn’t help that a neighbouring table had a loud and opinionated man who thought the whole restaurant should hear points of view. Not the best evening out!
A different menu to previous visits which was nice. The food was excellent. My husband commented that his steak was the best he had for a long time and my fish just melted in the mouth.
Staff were great, ambiance good but the food was really quite disappointing. Lamb was bland, pork was dry, beef was pretty bog standard. For the prices and reputation, I expected a lot lot better.
Average Sunday roast. Meat was tender but lacked depth of flavour and gravy was bland. Potatoes were a bit tough and greens rather bitter. If this had been a lunch at a chain place then I wouldn’t have expected better, but for a more premium place charging £19 for main then not the best value for money. Service friendly but a bit random - took forever to get our water and young waitress nearly dropped plate on me!!
Nice staff, food is good but attention to detail from kitchen could be better. I had to send my potatoes back because they were inedible and should never have been served, but waiting staff were great and sorted replacements without fuss. Rest of the meal was great. Puds could be more interesting.
Pleasant stay at a friendly hotel- food good staff very nice and accommodating to any needs
amazing! thanks so much for everything x had a great time
Super food efficient and friendly staff. Excellent food
Great food and great staff
The food at The Bear and Ragged Staff is lovely. Starters, mains, and desserts were all very good and of generous portions. The choice of beer on tap is fairly limited and somewhat disappointing. However, what made this evening dinner really not as good as it should have been are noise level and, most importantly, temperature. It was so hot it was really uncomfortable even wearing a light single layer. I know winter is coming, but surely we don't need the inside of the pub to feel like we're in a summer heatwave?
Great food good service great Sunday lunch
Staff ok found little pushy to order as soon as we arrived. Didn't communicate with each other very well asking the same questions.
Food was cold, dry and tasteless. Very disappointing experience.
Barely recognised the place following its tasteful Spring refurbishment. If you have to be acquired by a “chain”, the Peach Group would appear to be the one to hope for!
Lunch on the terrace with old friends on a beautiful Indian Summer’s day, excellent food (especially the Brioche Summer Berry Pudding) and a nice bottle of Alvarinho - what’s not to like?
We had to ask twice for the table water before it arrived.
We were shown the Specials Board.
However, when wanting to order the Lamb it was no longer available (why was it still on the board?)and there were only two Lamb racks left (although we wanted these, by the time the order was taken we were told there was only one left).
We began ordering our starters, the prawn and crab, but were told this was also unavailable.
My son then ordered the pork but this too was unavailable.
My son and myself ordered the soup and were surprised not to have at least one slice of bread with it.
Whilst starters were still unfinished the waitress came to the table and ask ‘Are you all finished?’ My wife replied she wasn’t, but the waitress said ‘oh, I’ll start clearing anyway’ and proceeded to take my wife’s unfinished bread away, which she was using with her olives!
Two steaks were then ordered and arrived without the Watercress salad (advertised on the menu) and no jus. The Waitress came with a small jug and said, flippantly, ‘Oh, I forgot the jus, I’ll just leave it here and you can pass it on’!
The waitress arrived with more plates, she told guests the plates were very hot (they were holding them with clothes) but proceeded to hand them to them anyway, instead of putting them on the table! Burnt fingers all round and no apology.
With everyone sat ready to start eating, I was left with nothing (I also ordered the Rump beef, pink). I did wonder how long it would be before the waitress noticed, I motioned to my empty place. I was then served Well done beef!
During the meal, twice drinks arrived that we hadn’t ordered, as did a cauliflower cheese that we hadn’t ordered. We were trying to celebrate and didn’t need these constant interruptions!
I was also surprised that these after meal drinks (Mint teas and coffee) were served before the desserts.
I indicated my dissatisfaction on a feedback form, and Bronte emailed asking for details. I sent the above but heard no more from her!
Had a very good meal here. Their crab and prawn cocktail was tasty and fresh. Special fish n chips was delicious. Nice to have a mix of fish with crunchy chips and mushy peas. A very pleasant meal with excellent service.
Lovely Sunday roast, ideal for an impromptu lunch
Food and service were both good. The evening was warm and a number of diners were outside. We were sitting inside and unfortunately smoke from outside smokers drifted into the restaurant through the open window.
Much improved over the last owners. Friendly staff Food very good quality
Had a lovely meal the staff were very friendly and the food was amazing, i would highly recommend the bear and ragged staff to my friends and family.
We went to the Bear and Ragged for our Valentine's celebration and we weren't disappointed. The food was absolutely delicious. Enjoyed it very much. Just needed to be a little more attentive on arrival as had to wait a fair while before we got our drinks, but that did not spoil the evening.
Good food overall esp the dessert. The pear and chocolate tart tatin was delicious!
Exceeded expectations. Good quality tasty food. Attentive service. Only cristisim is the main course was brought out to soon after starter course but other than that very pleased. Will definitely visit again.
