Delicious food and the cocktail menu is a must. Lovely atmosphere and fabulous service, will definitely be returning!
The food was fantastic! The sticky toffee pudding was truly amazing! Real comfort food at its best!
The food was lovely however we were overcharged for a sauce that was included & for chips which i had as an alternative to mash we did receive the money back for the sauce but not for chips which i wasn’t told when i asked for them instead of mash i would be charged £4 this should be made clear to the customer upon ordering i wouldn’t of had an issue if I’d of had both
The food and service was absolutely impeccable. The menu isn't huge but feels really well designed. I like that they have plenty of exciting choices for vegetarians, it's not just an afterthought. Such a fantastic selection of starters which had us picking several to share between us. Steak was cooked to perfection and the chips were mouth wateringly good. Great selection of drinks although would be good to have a cocktail menu as we had seen some posted on their Instagram. Pudding is also not to be missed, their butterscotch sticky toffee pudding was heavenly. Really looking forward to when we can visit again, Knaresborough really is lucky to have such a fantastic restaurant and I really hope they manage to survive the challenges ahead with Covid.
Very tasty steak, though should be advise on temperature. Best chips I’ve ever had. Sauces need more craft to be thicker.
Food was dreadful and service very slow my roast dinner was so overcooked and very unimaginative vegetables! I wouldn’t go back
Absolutely fantastic, already planning a post lockdown visit 🙏
Excellent food, excellent service, a fantastic time had by all!! 👌
wonderful food again. The lady that seated us was very helpful fantastic service
We enjoyed a lovely meal. I had a nicely cooked lamb steak with delicious chips and my friend had the brisket sandwich which she enjoyed.
The waitress was very friendly.
I do hope that you will be doing take away meals during the next lock down as I live nearby I certainly would make use of that.
Hope to go back after lockdown.
Rib of beef for 2 was excellent if a little pricey. (£55)
Great meal. Really well cooked food. Service excellent
This was the second time we came to the Bear, after having the sharing steak and cauli cheese, I had to come back & have it a second!
We will certainly be back again 🤤🤤
The best place in Knaresborough, if you're off to Knaresborough this is your spot xx
This was our first visit to the restaurant and was arranged to mark a friends birthday. The restaurant was fairly busy and is clearly popular, but we didn’t entirely enjoy our visit.
Our booking was for late Sunday afternoon and the lunch menu was still being served but our order would have been one of the last. The lunch arrived promptly and the beef, which we all had, was certainly as good as any I’ve had. The meal though was unfortunately lukewarm. At another time, I might have mentioned this to the staff who I’m sure would have tried to correct this. But because we had brought a guest to celebrate a birthday it didn’t seem appropriate to turn the atmosphere sour with a complaint. I suspect the real problem was our timing. I suspect that the food would have been much better earlier. But timing shouldn’t be an excuse for poor food presentation.
I’m sure that at another time the experience at the restaurant could be quite different. But we would not return to The Bear
Proper yorkshires and roasties!
We are glad we managed to book
After looking forward to trying The Bear I was disappointed. We have been to Carriages’s many times over previous years. Being newly diagnosed celiac, I was disappointed that the menus weren’t marked and had to ask the Gluten Free options. The food was only tepid when it came. I will be prepared to try it again and maybe GF options will have improved.
Diners requests ignored regarding gravy all over food. Side dishes arrived with nothing to serve with, no staff around to ask so has to use knife and forks before food cold.
Beef and Pork too rare.
All good just wanted more choice on the menu
Great place for drinks and cocktails the food was good . Recommend it
Our concerns are purely around procedures put in place concerning Corvid. Our table was less than one metre away from two other tables. Consequently we left asap that is after our main course.
Indian Spiced veg pie 🥧 with mash was gorgeous. Husband’s burger 🍔 went down well - don’t eat before because it is enormous!!!
Lovely outdoor lighting, great friendly service from Jackson.
Wrap up warm as it was a little chilly 🥶 although I believe the heaters are going to be installed this week.
Great night out and we will be going again.
Our first trip since it became The Bear and we loved it.
We ordered steak medium steak medium well lamb leg and chicken and everything was perfect especially the chips which were lovely as light. Great atmosphere and perfect safety measures in place. Table 5 was perfect near the window and out of the way. Thank you can’t wait to return.
Great food and friendly staff, our table was right next to the door which meant receiving a nasty draft every time someone opened the door and often they would linger at the door while leaving it wide open.
Rib of beef 🥩 fabulous
Energetic attentive staff
First visit to the Bear and we were very impressed we will be back.
Booked for spontaneous trip to knaresborough.
Really amazing food!
Would have liked a better table as felt a bit squished and uncomfortable but couldn’t fault food or service.
Food was so fresh and tasted amazing really good choice of options.
Will definitely be back!
Always feel welcome at The Bear! Food is fab and a great price for the quality, service is wonderful, quick and efficient! Have recommended it to a lot of people and so far no bad feedback! New burger is insane xxx
Still excellent food some weeks after opening. Very good service, good own brand beer. I really like this place, hope they have heaters outside for winter as the acoustics inside can mean it gets quite loud/echoey.
Had a selection of small dishes- they were delicious
Well it is an absolute shame to have to write this as the majority of the experience was good (James), however when you have one member of the team letting the rest of the team down, it’s not great at all.
This place was our ‘go to’ and whilst it has changed hands, there have been a couple of Occasions where certain members of staff are quite cold and stern in their approach. So much so we won’t be returning. We believe it is the owner or manager of the venue. He seems to very sarcastic and has a very ‘teacher’ like approach. There is a way of speaking to people and I don’t think he has quite grasped that.... to be made to feel like he is doing us a favour is not acceptable - we are paying customers and in fact on the day we visited, we were near enough his only customers.
The customer is always right, which is unfortunate for him on this occasion, but I think he seriously needs to consider is customer service style.
Sorry guys but there is a serious lack of warmth in this place and I don’t mean the temperature!
Excellent food and service, can’t wait to return. Lovely atmosphere too
Thoroughly enjoyed meal, drinks and service
So enjoyed our visit to The Bear. The food was delicious and we felt we could easily work our way through the whole menu.
Advertised children’s menu but didn’t have one. Had to pay for an adult meal for an 8 year old with a small appetite. Tables for food outside but to cold, expected heaters If offering this
How can you possibly review a restaurant when they are battling through a pandemic?
So firstly huge respect to the guys for taking on the challenge.
I have given a 4 on everything other than the service which is a 5 as regardless of the restrictions service is key and they have nailed that
It has the feel of the old Carriages if you see through the Covid protection. It feels safe and the guys are on it with respect to social distancing and ppe.
The service was swift and friendly.
The food is simple and definitely isn’t to the standards of the old Carriages, but I don’t think that was ever their intention. It’s pub food and a meat eaters dream.
If you liked Carriages then it’s worth a visit and I am sure they would appreciated your support.
A really enjoyable evening meal , will definitely go again , especially for the burnt beef ends they were melt in mouth gorgeous.....
We had 2 previous visits with very different experiences. However having been told about issues relating to our previous visit we agreed to give the Bear another go. We were not disappointed. The meal was excellent and far better than before and service much more efficient and professional. Our faith has been restored. We will be returning.
Food here is delicious, enjoyed every bite of it. I don’t usually have three courses but I did here. Sticky toffee pudding was sensational. Menu was concise, my only real gripe - I was expecting a gourmet burger on the menu. Definitely come again and highly recommend!
Second visit since Bear took over, already planning next trip
The best Sunday lunch around the food was fantastic the service was brilliant and such good value for money for a superb Sunday lunch highly recommended
