The Bear at Carriages
We are 100% independent, 100% family run gastropub based in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.
Our food centres round a roaring solid fuel fire pit, housed in our spectacular beer garden. Tuesday - Sunday we serve the very best local produce with a difference.
Our dog friendly bar area serves an enviable selection of draught craft beer, small batch spirits and cocktails. As if this wasn't enough, we have over 35 wines by the glass, so you can really choose the best wine to suit the occasion, or the food.

Just so easy to book and staff were attentive. Lots of servers too. Food lovely (we had pigs & chips!) plus some lovely draft cider and cocktails. Fab experience with great friends thank you
Overall happy with the experience! The only two things for me to point out would be the lamb was burnt/dry and staff were arguing which was slightly unprofessional.
Unfortunately it was very cold when we went and only a few tables had heaters but it was still a very nice atmosphere and the food was outstanding. Also recommend the cocktails!
Sitting outside on a cold evening we were certainly warm enough, comfortable and felt covid safe. The food was excellent, all four of us really enjoyed our meals and the service couldn’t be faulted. Very friendly and helpful.
Really great food simple but well-prepared street food. With great flavours, complimented by a fantastic wine list and a good selection of beers.
Nice alfresco set up. The food was great and good selection of drinks.
Service let it down despite the amount of staff on duty.
Would definitely return
Superb atmosphere, food, service and outside area. Felt very safe. Thanks, will be back again soon!
Great atmosphere! Friendly staff and nice drinks. Burger was great.
Went for Sunday lunch but it was actually just a blackboard menu. The choices were very good and the food just fabulous although the starters arrived with the mains and one steak was over cooked. This was well handled and did not spoil our afternoon. Staff were lovely and friendly. We will definitely be back!
Great pub, fab to have somewhere cool to go with friends in Knaresborough. The weekend special drink 'Beer Colada' was delicious and so creative. The renovation of the patio is fantastic - loads of tables, great vibes, great views across the valley.
Food-wise, loved the tempura broccoli. The ox cheek burger could have done with some sauce - the meat was lovely and tender, but overall it was too dry a mouthful. £12 was also a bit expensive for not a huge amount of food. Wish I'd gone with the butternut squash veggie burger my friend had.
Overall a great pub that I hope to go back to whenever I can manage to get a booking!
Fab food, great service, and lovely atmosphere. Would recommend.
Our first outing to a restaurant/pub since lockdown began lifting. So was very excited.
We found the staff 50/50 ...the female server was amazing- friendly, considerate, informative and apologetic for our wait.... the male server, barely spoke, mumbled when he did and wasn’t great.
The drinks were lovely, pricey but nice for a treat. We did have to wait longer than we would have liked for the drinks but it was a busy Saturday night so we didn’t think too much about it.
The food was nice, well cooked and different flavours and tastes.
We were a little disappointed at being seated next to a fairly rowdy couple of tables of ‘younger occupants’ who were a little disruptive- but not the Bears fault.
The music was ACE, the ambience was nice.... I anticipated they’re might be heaters but where we were sat there wasn’t. Again not the Bears fault- I should have checked.
We would both love to come back again for the food, maybe during the day when it’s not as busy or loud x
We love this place and have visited several times. Not a chain. Cook over coals. Great ambience, staff, food and super wine list where lots available by the glass. We are going to book again for May 16 with friends. Highly recommend.
Lovely setting, friendly and efficient staff, food delicious, really enjoyed our afternoon
The spacing between the tables were not to covid guidelines. People squeezing between seats bashing your back as they passed. People when dining finished were directed to finish drinking by edge standing up. Msde it quite crowded
Food good although at 645pm had run out of things so not perfect for my gluten free daughter.
Didn’t like the fact that you were eating and the table next to you were smoking, otherwise it would have got full marks
Fantastic food, so tasty, the chips in particularly were very good.
Great food . Been twice this week alone but the only think that lets it down is the slow drink service , first time I waited about 25 mins for my drink to arrive . Will keep supporting local but it does appear a bit disorganised service wise .
Absolutely fantastic food. The sun was shining and the service was excellent.
Excellent lunch. Food first class, great atmosphere.
Fab food, fab service. The Yorkshire burger was really tasty! My only suggestion would be to think about the out door table lay out. I am immune suppressed and I felt quite close to the other diners- the tables are certainly not 2 meters apart.
Amazing food and friendly staff will definitely return.
Perfect setting for late afternoon relax and social.
Good selection of food and beers plus cocktails to boot.
Staff available but not intrusive
Food very good. Weather brilliant. Enjoyed an early evening meal.
Great service, very attentive. Lovely food and atmosphere!
Nice afternoon out with my best mate. Only downer was the 2 hour time limit
Fantastic food and service
And great atmosphere will definitely be going back soon
Beautiful beer garden, lovely, friendly staff. Food was amazing, highly recommend the blackened salmon and the Yorkshire burger!
Lovely place with a huge beer garden. great staff friendly and happy to chat with you. Went at lunch food was lovely definitely a new gem of a find
Food was excellent although box it was served in detracted from dish. Much prefer a plate. Surrounding outside was comfortable and service also very good. Box or no box will be going back.
Friendly staff, lovely food and nice atmosphere
Tasty food. Gorgeous steak with a lovely salad and amazing fries! Already planning on our next visit and what we are going to order next time. Some great choices on the board with some things a little bit different to other places. Lively buzzing atmosphere nice to have some music playing. Good we could take our dogs. Service excellent and felt Covid safe
This was such a lovely place to have a drink - even on a cold Monday night! The service was excellent and the ambience relaxing. Will definitely come again.
It would be helpful, when allowing people to book a restaurant, if you indicate somewhere on the booking that food is not served on Monday evenings!
Service was very poor. Food was cold. A table next to us was moved in the warm but we were not offered. Just a poor overall experience.
I've always loved going to Carriages and the Bear is a nice continuation of that. The atmosphere in the courtyard is lovely with all the lights and heaters. We were all very comfortable.
Shocking service...food on the table but no cutlery in sight, asked for it about a million times same with a jug of water and the bill. The food was very nice but we won't rush back because of the service.
Very clean, excellent service, appropriate safety measures and great quality food and drink. Can definitely recomend
Service was terrible, steaks overcooked for both of us and the table we were on wasn’t great we kept getting knocked by staff and customers squeezing past us and a big potted plant.
I love the Beer garden and the ambience of Carriages inside[when allowed!] What The Bear has done to the outside area has maximised the space and made it a really stylish area. I love the Bear Pit!
I have visited twice already and enjoyed the food and the atmosphere both times. We had a lovely afternoon on Sunday, the staff are really friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, the service was a bit slow, the staff seemed a bit rushed and one order arrived when most of us had finished eating. Also, my friend said her chicken was a bit over cooked. However, this did not spoil our overall experience and we will return again soon! :)
